Used to love listening to John Peel at 10 'o clock every night, waiting for him to play the latest punk single , his voice was unreal, this has brought back many great memories, such a great man and a real loss, its sad that today's generation will never get to hear a really great DJ at work, you were and you are still a legend,
Big Stick's "Drag Racing" song/video which was featured in "John Peel's Record Box" can be found at our youtube channel,,,, you're invited to visit... we're thankful for all the attention John brought to our music...damn, we sure miss John....
i used to listen to him when i was a kid.i used to like how he played loads of different stuff and some proper rare tracks that you just woundnt get on normal radio shows.
That reaction was priceless...as a 22 year old i feel slightly bitter that I never got to listen to the great man himself properly...I feel enraged that the BBC have totally and utterly failed to fill the musical gap he left.
YCSMusic, that is so true!! John really had a brilliant ear for good music, whilst that sad bastard cowell was cluless about music, I mean decent music, not that shit cowell churns out!! simon cowell is a commercial prostitute with no talent what so ever!! RIP Mr Peel! and may more come along who share his passion!! Too much reality shows now, far too many!!
I watched that episode of TOTP!! I remember it well, I also remember Anne Robinson getting it at the end of Watchdog! RIP John Peel (from a fellow Scouser and LFC fan)
The best name for radio 1...a star , a man of such musical talent. we so miss him. let it be heard for everyone who has recorded his voice, we shall ever forget.
JP is a radio legend responsible for bringing unheard music to the airwaves, starting with his Perfumed Garden on pirate radio back in the early 60's. Thanks for all the music. RIP.
interesting hearing Bowie come on first, John often says that the only contact he ever had of him was shouting at him to go on stage as a mime before T Rex.
John did a few Top Gear shows with David Bowie and also The Sound Of The Seventies in 1971. As well as DJ on the Tyrannosaurus Rex tour where as you mentioned, Bowie did his 'Man stuck in a telephone box' mime routine and the 'Tibet' mime. As well as probably bumping in to him at the Speakeasy and other gigs.
As a teen in Texas in 1964, I listened to John Ravenscroft's Saturday morning Beatles report on KLIF from Dallas. I wrote him a fan letter, and to my surprise received a very cool reply, which he signed "see you at the Beatles show." John Ravenscroft was the most talented radio personality (not yet a dj) I ever heard on Top 40, and I was sorry when he left town. I didn't get to meet him but fortunately did get to see the Beatles!
i'm too young to have cottoned onto his show when he was still alive, but watching this and listening to recordings of old peel sessions i am struck by this: john peel was one of the nicest blokes ever.
The man is a genius! Still influencing people's musical tastes now. His biography, written by his wife, gives an intimate and fascinating insight into what made the man. And of course.....he's a Reds fan!
really know what you mean Nick. Have suffered family bereavement but no one's passing in "public life" has been as painful as this man. all the best to you and continued peace (but not that much, he wouldnt like it that way i guess) to John
Words cannot praise him enough... John was a genius who changed the way a whole generation saw music, and the way it reflected society. And most of all a lovely, modest wonderfully intelligent man
He was very gracious when speaking to a sycophantic turd like Aspel. The best This is Your Life clip was when the great Bill Oddie told him (and his red book) to fuck off...CLASS!
we only have egomaniac shit heads now for djs that care more about thier own voice and image than the music.but peely was lucky because music today is fucking shite
John Peel influenced a great deal of my music tastes...Cos 75 percent of the stuff he played was not only good--it was awesome. I taped his shows for three years straight (til I went back to the states) The best radio i ever heard--and perhaps ever will hear happened under his watch. Best on the planet.
Gawd bless Peel. Despite his one big fault (that being his love of that Scouse football team that play in red) he was a diamond that shined brightly in this world that seems happy to wallow in shit.
Love how he kisses each of his children on the cheek like that. Very sweet and heartfelt.
