  • Is this knucklehead saying anti-communism equates to racism? The John Birch Society has nothing to do with racism. A cursory Wikipedia search reveals: "Antisemitic, racist, anti-Mormon, anti-Masonic, and various religious groups criticized the group's acceptance of Jews, non-whites, Masons, and Mormons. These opponents accused Welch of harboring feminist, ecumenical, and evolutionary ideas."

    I tend to agree with AfP the most out of who they support. Heritage Foundation tends to be a little hawkish for me. CATO tends to shun Ron Paul so I lost a lot of respect for them.

While Jefferson and Adams had their feuds (mostly due to Hamilton, whom Abby Adams thought wanted to make himself a Napoleon) in the nascence of the US, they reconciled after they were out of office, and had a long series of exchanges of letters on all kinds of topics. Though I'll take Adams, who kept us out of a war between England and France, over Jefferson, who never came close to living his idealistic rhetoric.

I remember once JFK was talking to some group and said it was a meeting of the most intelligent people ever, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone. I thought JFK was brilliant, too, and his use of vocabulary at press conferences verified that.

  • @bodryn I think it depends how you define the parameters. In terms of street activism, the left has been funding that for decades through various left-wing agencies. I run into paid activists almost everyday in the bay area, and nothing about that has changed for 30+ years. I have never seen any paid right-wing activists on the street soliciting for right-wing causes. I suspect it is similar in other metropolitan areas. If you are talking about billionaire behind-the-scenes donors, who knows?

  • @slewofdamascus Well, we have just learned that the Koch Bros were behind the earliest development of the Tea Party phenomenon. During the height of the Madison demonstrations, when up to 150,000 people were in the streets, a small contingent of tea partiers were bussed in, thanks to Koch Bros, to try to show a meaningful opposition to the people. (It fell pretty flat.) The Koch's father was involved in the John Birch society phenom.
