We have to do gangster costumes for a rally, and for some insane reason I volunteered to make the spats for the guys. I wasn't even too sure what spats even were. :| But after watching your video I am not concerned at all. I even have some white soft vinyl so, how vegan is that?? I know it doesn't have to be vegan but after she went to the effort to teach me how, I can at least consider her opinions. I love this spats concept and now I have ideas for me just for fun, so Yay...Thx so much!
I adore spats. I'm not a steampunk person at all, I'm a history nerd. But, my goodness, historical fashion is the best thing ever! I want spats, bicorns and 1860s frock coats to come back in style, (though perhaps not to be combined into one outfit...)
Hei Corrin, I like your blouse.... did you make them? can u tell me how to make that blouse? i have a lot of laces lying around my closet so pls tell me how to make my own.
I was wondering if you can sew these spats by hand. I don't have a sewing machine (or can buy one at this time) and was wondering if hand sewing was tight/sturdy enough for this project. Thank you very much!
spats have been used by the military throughout the world for hundreds of years (seriously) they used to make theirs by hand so as long as your hand doesn't cramp out you should be good to make yours by hand also.
And i totally support the comments below. It would be so friggin awesome if you also featured some more episodes on Gothic Lolita! I really love this designer's Classic Loli dresses ^_____^
@eyeblazer Hmmm... still, ppl might think that Lolita is related to Steampunk in a much bigger way... i'm a Lolita, and the poor subculture has been thrashed and pushed around way too much to have more ppl come and confuse the rest even more. u.u
@akissy I am a Lolita too, I was hoping that if they saw a connection they would go into make a tutorial for something Lolita... maybe classic because of the more noticeable victorian aesthetic. At the same time though looking back at what Corrine made for a steampunk outfit a tutorial might have led others to believe something was Lolita that wasn't . I just wish there where more resources for the sewing Loli.
@eyeblazer Sweetie, you don't look hard enough, both in YouTube and in the forums there's LOADS of Lolita tutos. also, Steampunk has NO connection to Lolita save the Victorian inspiration... and then again, Lolita tends more to the Rococo, unless it's Gothic Lolita and Classic...and then again, Classic should be only worn by seasoned Lolitas, it's hard to pull it off without looking like a governess. And she never gave any indication that her Steampunk costume was anything Lolita.
@akissy I don't know where you got that idea from, since everything in the costume SHOUTS Streampunk. And finishing it off... why on Earth did you think that seeing a connection with Steampunk would've made the now gone-from-the-show RC go and make a Lolita tuto? XDD Don't complicate yourself, just request something Lolita and period. XDD This was for Steampunk week, they could've as well just had a Lolita week. Holy cupcakes. XDD
@akissy I have to disagree with you on the outfit, As for the connection there is Steampunk Loli, I have seen many a successful coord mixing both.
I did ask directly, adding since there is a connection (the victorian aesthetic) and the growth in interest of the lolita it might be fun to look over that direction . Plus the person making the spats actually does Lolita too. Look her up on the search function on the LJ EGL comm.
@eyeblazer There's just one, and I already corrected them. Also, Steampunkloli is part of cosplay lolita, and as cute as it can be, it's not an official category in the Lolita subculture, and there's no way around it. Which means that if you dress up as a Steampunk Lolita and try to pull it off as an official style you'll be one of the biggest Itas ever, chucked back there with the lace monsters and rectangular headdresses. And spats are Oujisama and Dandy only.
@eyeblazer also, EGL is Mana's brand of clothing, shouldn'tbe used to name the subculture. And many people do a lot of "Lolita INSPIRED" stuff... but that doesn't mean it's Lolita. I have studied Lolita ever since I was like 13, and I still am not satisfied with my results. Just because it's Victorian inspired and has lace, it doesn't make it automatically Lolita... this is why ppl get confused and name ANYTHING lacey Lolita...
@akissy It would have been great if they had done a Jfashion week sadly it didn't happen. Mine was a suggestion not for that week but for possible tutorial.
@eyeblazer Yes, Moi-même-Moitié (that's how you spell it) is the brand, because that is the name of his shop. But for lack of a better word I used brand as a description of EGL, since EGL cannot be used in anything but Mana's clothing. Same for EGA. They aren't categories of Lolita per se, since they are Mana's own and you cannot call anything else like that rather than Mana's clothing line. So for lack of a better word, I called it brand. If you have a better word, say it. ^^
@akissy Also, trying to be in a high horse isn't going to work for you, since you think that Steampunk-Lolita is actually a category of the subculture. XD
@akissy Mana coined the phrase Elegant Gothic Lolita, which is represented through the anagram EGL. The EGL I refer to is not a category of lolita but a internet community of Lolitas. Perhaps SteamPunk lolita isn't as popular as gosu-loli, ama-loli, or classic loli; but it is among the other group such as pirate loli, military loli, or [insert theme here]loli. .
@eyeblazer It's not a matter of how popular it is. Guro-loli is one of the least popular Lolita subcategories and so is Qi Lolita and they are listed as official subcategories always. You won't change my mind, not because you don't have valid arguments, but because it simply sin't part of the fashion. You're mixing two very different subcultures and it is Ita, rude and ignorant to call it a subcategory when it is not.
Those you listed are cosplay, only official pirate is in Ouji.
spats, the little shoe covers are entirely cosmetic, covering up unsightly laces and bows and protecting the shoe from scuffs. They lend a cleaner, more streamlined, albiet more gangster, look and are normally only worn with tuxedoes and at swing dancing clubs these days.
Yay! I made some spats, but I didn't use leather. I used cloth. This was perfect because I don't have to throw away these boots that are tattered... The spat covers up any tattered spots! =D
I am going to make those, but i think i will try to crochet one using a wool material to make one and figure to pattern of the crochet over it, it it works i will send you both a pair

...dolls or children.
Trust me, I really like the style, but it was really a shock to me to learn the subculture was a part of the lolicon fetish, even though its evolved very much from that.
PistachioMuffins: Let's get one thing straight, smart one. 1. You DO NOT know anything about the fashion. Lolicon? Russian pedophile novels? Are you f*cking joking here? Go look at the wiki page again, and look carefully. There is NOTHING on that page with the word "Japan". NOTHING. So gothic lolitas are supposed to appear cute, and young - but also ELEGANT. Once again it was popularized with the Japanese Rock scene called "Visual Kei". You don't understand the music, you DO NOT KNOW
...ANYTHING ABOUT THE STYLE. You "really like the style"? I don't think you show any signs of being familiar with EGL, EGA, Jrock, or Visual kei. You have no idea. You do not know what you are talking about. It may come as a shock to you but MUSIC, I repeat JAPANESE ROCK MUSIC is the inspiration here. And to educate you, most of the Japanese rockers who popularized the fashion are Japanese MALES. Sucks to your victimized female fictional characters. Google up "Malice Mizer" if you are curious.
where was this toot two weeks ago!? i sooooo could have used it for animecon 09 (was a total steampunk mechanic) it was a pain in my arse to make my own pattern and try to figure it out. oh well atleast i learned something! 8< -snip snip-
You cant use pins in leather buy I know my mom used to use thoes snappy silver hair clips. the one shaped like a tear drop if anyone knows what I'm talking about. I dunno if it would dent leather but she used them instead of pins.
They are also easier to clip if you have bad hands and find sticking pins tough.
OMG! I am so in love with spats! i always wondered how to make them and I thank you so much for posting how to. Also I have to admit that Corinne .. your hat is super keen! i would love to know either where you got it from or the how to for that as well.
Um, you may think so, but not everyone does. I do not like it, personally. And honestly? Such a small percentage of people like it, that it's ridiculous to devote a whole week and then some to it.
We have to do gangster costumes for a rally, and for some insane reason I volunteered to make the spats for the guys.

SaukaKumagae 2 years ago 5
Um, you may think so, but not everyone does. I do not like it, personally. And honestly? Such a small percentage of people like it, that it's ridiculous to devote a whole week and then some to it.
toodaloos93 2 years ago
I agree, not all of us like it, and yet here it is, episode after episode, being thrust upon us.
