I don't say this very often, and I do, in fact oppose anyone anyone suggesting remakes of any classic games, but Xenogears gets an exception. It was a great game that was released unfinished (which pisses me off because I HATE half assed jobs and would NEVER suspect Square would ever release a halfassed game)
Surely SquareEnix is capable of taking a ready made story, snazzing it up with updated GFX and finishing the gameplay for disk two. I wouldn't think the original crew is necessary for that
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Xenogears. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
@AjiraCtelin1993 Play xenogears. I liked xenosaga episode 1, couldn't get into 2, didn't play 3. None of them are anything like xenogears though, and not as good either.
@boringtree I highly suggest you play the 3rd Xenosaga, even if you don't finish the 2nd one. Xenosaga III is on a whole different level, the story is almost as epic as Xenogears in the end. :P
Is it just me or have there been no RPG's even half as compelling as PS1 rpgs in years? Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Legend of Mana, etc. Oh but that Square by itself was still in business.
Xenogears, and Xenosaga for that matter, were too big and epic in their scope and ambitions for the company financing the series to keep up. So all of the games, save perhaps the first of the Xenosaga Trilogy, were compromised in some manner. They were still great fun even in that state.
Xenogears I think ran out of money so they had to cheese it up on the second disc. I only wished that squaresoft went all the way, would of been so epic to show it fully completed.
@RPGFan28 sure, but buying a NA PS2 and having it shipped to you, while likely expensive, is possible. Then you just need a power adapter, and ta-da, you can play xenogears.
shame on squaresoft for cutting the funding on one of there best games and making disc 2 a written story i hope someone kicked ther entire money management teams asses for this this was one of the most in-depth rpgs to ever be created
Xenogears should have been a large budget MMO, it has so much potential. With the new influx of anime crazy people this game has enough anime backround to appeal to a large demographic. The fact that Square-enix isn't monopolizing on this sleeping giant just makes me depressed.
It was going to be a remake. I say we should go kick the crap out of Namco to make Xenosagas 4 and 5. (Preferably on all consoles, but eh, whatever works.) And if they refuse, we pull the good ol' Warhammer 40,000 strategy on them.
While a nice sentiment, a simple port with refreshed sprites and seamless polygonal environs on the DS or PSP will do much better than some full 3D remake. Remaking games usually results in something being lost along the way.
Personally, I prefer Xenosaga's feel over Xenogears'. I would have preferred that Xenosaga was continued on next gen consoles. Shame about Monolith Soft.
I still do. This game makes me go crazy. I almost want to ask someone to re-make this got next-gen consols but then again they would probably make it 'too epic' and totally fuck it up.
I fucking love the music in this game! And more, I love where they've PUT the music. It's emotional and covers all points of the emotional spectrum. The first time I heard the 'boss' music for the Renkar Dragon I was like "...holy shit, this is serious shit!"
and then when this played while fighting deus I was like "SHITSHITSHIT THE WORLD IS ENDING!"
Personally, I really like the haunting/ depressing tracks
Wandering through that lightouse hearing that incredibly depressing music (I believe the track was omen) was, oddly enough, a huge highlight of the game and fit incredibly well with the derilect area where those horrible things took place.
And I think that it was a creative apex for the genre. Unfortunately, the ambitions were there but the technology was behind what these guys wanted to do at the time. Now that the technology has caught up the soul and creative talent isn't in these companies anymore.
FFVII and Xenogears are both great games. And it is great that people still play these two games and vivaciously debate them ten years on.... I was a hardcore RPGer back in the late 90's and it was truly a renaissance period for the genre.
I agree. FFVII is way over-hyped. Yes, it is a great game, but it is not the "best game ever" in my eyes. One playthrough of FFVII and I was done. After 10 years, I still play Xenogears and still enjoy the story.
While FFVII has a place in my Top games, Xenogears is higher, due to it's in-depth story and it's amazing music. The 2D sprites were much cleaner looking than the 3D Sprites in FFVII. But this is merely my opinion. You are all free to disagree with me.
Which do I like mor ff7 or xenogears, ANSWER IS I CANT CHOSE,both stories were epic, both character cast rocked, xenogears battle system was better, especially on the fights you had to think outside the box, The blob monster, the supplier hint hint,ff7s hidden goodies were better, In my book both games delivered during my teen 15-16 yrs old ages, But who do you thnk would win Cloud or Fei, Fei should be in a Dissidia sequel lol!!
do you remember the mako posioning scene in ff7 when cloud mutters Xenogears, Thats why, This game was overshadowed a bit by ff7 , it hit Japan before it launched, I even remembered Gamefan and egm being upset in 1997 that it wouldnt hit the states, But in 99 we got our wishes, and I beat this Classic game during Spring Break,FF7,Xenogears,Suikoden 2 and ps1 wild arms are on my Most favorite RPGs of all time list! I have more but my comment space is running low.
I haven't even played Xenogears but i think it is the best rpg on ps1 buy a long shot. don't even bother arguing with me, people don't argue with me 'cause i don't shut up.
@RPGFan28 Can't say that until you beat it man. But you're right :). It's not the graphics but the crazy storyline and scenario. Takahashi is a real genious.
@RPGFan28 hmmm what kind of comment is this? I like to eat sushi because it's the best kind of food in the whole world but I have never eaten sushi before.... O_o wtf?
I loved both FF7 and Xenogears... I think that artistically and gameplay-wise, I like FF7 better...
But in the story department, Xenogears definitely wins. I often got goosebumps from it, and it definitely was more thought-inspiring. Still love FF7's story, but it's more the attachment to the characters than anything. I think that this story was written better. Amazing music, as well.
RPG is all about characters. Xenogears characters were unbelievable. I was so surprised about Emeralda's background even though she barely spoke a word, especially when you visit that special spot with the item to transform her. The repeated lives of Fei and eli was crazy stuff.
Aside from Xeno and FF7, the other RPGs have fallen so badly I pretty much lost all hope.
only FF9 comes close to those two games.
J-RPGs are as dead as latin. and we are both too old to play them now. (i'm 25)
Xenogears has a marvelous story indeed, but it didn't quite draw me in the same way FFVII did. Xenogears was like a wonderous experience, and it did draw me in an aweful lot, but FFVII just felt like home in a strange way, as if the reason for me being a gamer was to play and understand that world. For me, nothing will ever come close to that feeling again, and in knowing this I feel both delighted, and sad.. A two sided coin really.
"Why these foolish convo's? just give your opinion and leave it at that, everyone has got his own opinion and thats that! jeez" It's human nature, but relax man, I'm not hurting people or anything like that. When I see someone's opinion, I am just as free to speak about that opinion, as the person formulating that opinion was in formulating it. I could just as well ask, why ask ? I'm fairly sure an 'opinion' like; 'kermit is stronger then vegeta', is not one to be taken serious.
Well, I personally think that the best RPG ever would be a close one between Lost Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei (take your pick on any game form the series), or Xenogears. Don't get me wrong FF7 is a great game (hell, Sephiroth is one of my all-time favorite characters) but I think Lost Odyssey, Xenogears, and Shin Megami Tensei have it beat. FF7's storyline is pretty standard: some nobody kid ends up saving the world from an insane psychopath who should have completely outclassed him.
Don't feel bad about letting FF7 get the shaft behind all those. Besides, even though it was a fun and entertaining RPG on its own, it's also by far one of the most overrated video games ever made. It stands shoulder to shoulder with Halo.
You're very right by pointing out that the Persona games and Lost Odyssey are far superior. And even though Xenogears has its technical flaws, the story was just so amazingly detailed, players didn't even complain.
I really don't understand why FF7 still gets so much love. It's NOT that "OMGWTF AWESOME!!!" It never was.
I've been a junkie for the series since the original back in 1990, and aside from how pretty it looked, it was a very generic chapter that was chock-full of old cliches from beginning to end.
Yeah, it's a fun game, and I did enjoy it. But come on. In terms of storytelling and writing alone, Xenogears curb-stomps FF7.
When I speak the truth, folks will always shout out in denial. :D
It's one thing to be your favorite game ever. That's perfectly cool. But come on now... To rate it the "BEST EVER" is like the typical XBOX fanboy still screaming that Halo is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
people see it because it has everyones favorite *bishe* sephiroth...i couldnt eye roll any harder than i do whenever i hear that god damn name
7 was an ok game, it was big for square because it broke all the boundaries that theyre used to, what with sprites, and the technology available for music
comparatively 8, 9 and even 10 were much better games than 7
Final fantasy 6's story almost is as good as Xenogears, and 6 has the best in the series
I would agree. FFVIII and FFIX were shit compared to FFVII. I mean, honestly, I grew up with the older titles, and was a die hard FFIV and then FFVI fan when if first came out, but objectively speaking (without nostalgic, rose-colored glasses) FFVII blows all the rest out of the water--including FFVI which I loved to death. Xenogears is my favorite RPG by a long shot, but FFVII is probably my 2nd. Atleast I can be objective--a lot of people seem to have a problem with this concept.
You know, you speak like you're the only one with any sophistication here, yet then go on to use the word "dogshit" in the same comment, not to mention acting like you're somehow oh so superior for your opinions. Seriously, while VII was great and all, it is by no means legendary, and it has some very, VERY glaring flaws that simply can not be ignored, no matter how you slice it. Again, it's still extremely good, just nowhere near perfect.
deus wasnt hard i bought some gnr50 and put 3 in every gear it means that you ll need 9 gnr50 which is like 500000 bucks xD you can get it in 3 hours fighting in the polar areas. with that equipment you can kill metatron, harlute, marlute and the other sopport in 3 turns =) and deus like in 5
Deus isn't that hard if you destroy all the support bosses before going to him. Then all you have to do is get Xenogears up to Attack Level Infinity and try to finish him off before he uses Ultimate Break on your party.
Deus isn't hard period. And ultimate break is survivable without much of a problem, unless you're going for the low-level challenge. If you have half-decent equipment, let alone the ultimate gear equipment from the Zeboim ruins shop. I have Xenogears decked out, one Z charger (charge restores 500 fuel) and two of +50% attack power gear accessories. I can defend with two people, and just attack with Xenogears. Even with no hyper mode (attack level infinity), I can rip Deus apart.
This is probably my second favorite tune from Xenogears. Number 1 being "One Who Bears Fangs at God", the song that plays during Fei and Krelians verbal exchange then battle against the Ouroborous.
One of the best final boss battle songs. No I consider Deus the true final boss of this game, Urobolus was way to easy, and was more of a theatrical boss sort of like Sephiroth human form was when you omnislash his ass. But yes this is up there with Onewinged Angel.
Deus IS the final boss! Urobolus is just interactive video :D ! I DARE YOU TO LOSE ON HER IF YOU CAN! Realy now Xenogears has the best videogame music i EVER ever heard! Up to today i still think it's the best videogame and it's music is one of the reasons! All of the boss music are cool for me so i can hardly say i agree this is also for me the best of them all! But the diference is tiny :D!
This song truely captures the moment...yes i started crying! LOL :) This is a rare exotic rpg that i'll never forget MASTERPEICE for it's time, not many others come close.
I really liked the second disc because it finally connected all the threads of the plot. In fact, plot-wise I think the beginnig of the game is fairly disjointed.
o ya i totally understand. theres pretty much only one plot and one path in the end so it was fairly for them to place the missing pieces. in the beginning, its understandable that its disjointed because of all the characters that come in. its part of storytelling. have a giant puzzle with pieces everywhere and put them together.
You're right, that is true of most complex plots. I suppose I just like when things start coming together and you start saying "Ahh, so THAT's how it is"
i had to play the game a couple times to understand the story. when i first played it was too young to understand. i just played for the gamplay. then a couple years later i looked at the cd and thought, "i should play it to understand it now." im glad i did because now i believe this is one of the greatest rpgs in history. great story.
so true fast enough to wipe out any boss that stand againinest id... like hes in god mode, speed hacking, strength hacking, and all the bosses put together

Ow. I guess you're right.
Bringing some popular 2D games into 3D graphic is not that easy. Even some of them ends in near-failure.
Well, if they wants to remake Xenogears, at least they should give it a little more touch in graphics, such as hi-res 2D & 3D sprites.

If you're going to compare two difference genres, then FFVII is on par with Quake 2,
as Halo is a piece of crap next to Quake 2.

Why these foolish convo's? just give your opinion and leave it at that, everyone has got his own opinion and thats that! jeez

"I really don't understand why FF7 still gets so much love. It's NOT that "OMGWTF AWESOME!!!" It never was."
Then why do so many people recognize it as
the best RPG ever created ?
It's the only game I truly melted with, in heart
and soul, in all my 20-ish years of gaming,
and I enjoy nearly any game, of any genre.
Among all the exceptional good ones,
I have to admit FFVII was the icing on the cake,
EVEN when put next to other genres.
godverdegodverdomme 3 years ago
people see it because it has everyones favorite *bishe* sephiroth...i couldnt eye roll any harder than i do whenever i hear that god damn name
7 was an ok game, it was big for square because it broke all the boundaries that theyre used to, what with sprites, and the technology available for music
comparatively 8, 9 and even 10 were much better games than 7
Final fantasy 6's story almost is as good as Xenogears, and 6 has the best in the series
bohemi 2 years ago
Seriously man, you have zero right to speak
about FFVII when you claim that VIII and X
were better games, let alone 'much' better.
You epicly fail to realize what is art
and what is not.
VII is not a goddamn 'ok' game,
it is among the most legendary games
ever created, and only a fool would deny that.
VIII, X, and even IX where pieces of utter
dogshit when compared to VII.
godverdegodverdomme 2 years ago
I would agree. FFVIII and FFIX were shit compared to FFVII. I mean, honestly, I grew up with the older titles, and was a die hard FFIV and then FFVI fan when if first came out, but objectively speaking (without nostalgic, rose-colored glasses) FFVII blows all the rest out of the water--including FFVI which I loved to death. Xenogears is my favorite RPG by a long shot, but FFVII is probably my 2nd. Atleast I can be objective--a lot of people seem to have a problem with this concept.
Mineav 2 years ago
And I respect you for replying the way you did,
at least you give the game the respect it rightfully deserves, unlike all the assholes that could bring themselves to voting me down for
speaking the damn truth.
In my personal list, VII ranks above Xenogears,
but hey, I played and finished Xenogears 100%
And loved it, most definately one of the best ever.

MMMMMM TRUE ART HOW MARVELOUS
You know, you speak like you're the only one with any sophistication here, yet then go on to use the word "dogshit" in the same comment, not to mention acting like you're somehow oh so superior for your opinions. Seriously, while VII was great and all, it is by no means legendary, and it has some very, VERY glaring flaws that simply can not be ignored, no matter how you slice it. Again, it's still extremely good, just nowhere near perfect.
THIS GUY ARE SICK.

deus wasnt hard i bought some gnr50 and put 3 in every gear it means that you ll need 9 gnr50 which is like 500000 bucks xD you can get it in 3 hours fighting in the polar areas. with that equipment you can kill metatron, harlute, marlute and the other sopport in 3 turns =) and deus like in 5
Goldpanter 3 years ago
the game is fairly easy if you level up about 5 levels every chance you get. Makes the game play like an actual movie.

the second disc IS a move (even more than MGS4)
madsli 3 years ago
Deus isn't that hard if you destroy all the support bosses before going to him. Then all you have to do is get Xenogears up to Attack Level Infinity and try to finish him off before he uses Ultimate Break on your party.
Kivwolf 3 years ago
Deus isn't hard period. And ultimate break is survivable without much of a problem, unless you're going for the low-level challenge. If you have half-decent equipment, let alone the ultimate gear equipment from the Zeboim ruins shop. I have Xenogears decked out, one Z charger (charge restores 500 fuel) and two of +50% attack power gear accessories. I can defend with two people, and just attack with Xenogears. Even with no hyper mode (attack level infinity), I can rip Deus apart.
neerios 3 years ago
He is impossible if you never learned how to go hyper mode and just played the game straight through.

This is probably my second favorite tune from Xenogears. Number 1 being "One Who Bears Fangs at God", the song that plays during Fei and Krelians verbal exchange then battle against the Ouroborous.
mobius1aic 3 years ago 2
Agreed. That song is so unique, and thats really saying something given XG's excellent soundtrack.

i found the battle with miang the hardest
lhf85 4 years ago
Yeah fighting rasmus and then miang was quite hard, but it was not impossible. you just need to get the proper team and tactic and there you go!

One of the best final boss battle songs. No I consider Deus the true final boss of this game, Urobolus was way to easy, and was more of a theatrical boss sort of like Sephiroth human form was when you omnislash his ass. But yes this is up there with Onewinged Angel.
MagusX1 4 years ago
Deus IS the final boss! Urobolus is just interactive video :D ! I DARE YOU TO LOSE ON HER IF YOU CAN! Realy now Xenogears has the best videogame music i EVER ever heard! Up to today i still think it's the best videogame and it's music is one of the reasons! All of the boss music are cool for me so i can hardly say i agree this is also for me the best of them all! But the diference is tiny :D!

Glad some one agrees with me on that for once.....

The whole work of Mitsuda is great, listen to the Chrono Cross Soundtrack, there you'll find a lot of wonderful compositions too.

It's called "Awakening." Less spoilers that way. I'm also disappointed that I didn't see the final battle with Deus.

now if only you could acually play the second disc
madsli 4 years ago
the second disc wasnt too bad. i learned alot from the second disc. i found it intriguing and at the same time fun.
MarukuAntoni 3 years ago
I really liked the second disc because it finally connected all the threads of the plot. In fact, plot-wise I think the beginnig of the game is fairly disjointed.
MJGriftz 3 years ago
o ya i totally understand. theres pretty much only one plot and one path in the end so it was fairly for them to place the missing pieces. in the beginning, its understandable that its disjointed because of all the characters that come in. its part of storytelling. have a giant puzzle with pieces everywhere and put them together.
MarukuAntoni 3 years ago
You're right, that is true of most complex plots. I suppose I just like when things start coming together and you start saying "Ahh, so THAT's how it is"
MJGriftz 3 years ago
i had to play the game a couple times to understand the story. when i first played it was too young to understand. i just played for the gamplay. then a couple years later i looked at the cd and thought, "i should play it to understand it now." im glad i did because now i believe this is one of the greatest rpgs in history. great story.

That gear moves so fast you can't even see it
Harthos 4 years ago 3
so true fast enough to wipe out any boss that stand againinest id... like hes in god mode, speed hacking, strength hacking, and all the bosses put together
andy56duky 4 years ago
I believe the track is called "Awakening." Very appropriate given the game's Gnostic undertones.
