@jsouder: Historically it is in response to Tuba Christmas, which began at least a couple decades ago. A group of tuba players decided to congregate and play Christmas music, and it was such a success that the event grew more popular each year. There are several recordings. The joke is that when you get a bunch of trumpet players together they have to show off, and sometimes to the great injury of musicality.

@jsouder: it's a trumpet thing :) Ever listen to The Star Spangled Banner and notice that high note towards the end? The "optional" one you only sometimes hear? Vocalists and trumpet players alike tend to gauge their abilities by achieving notes like that (a well developed ego is something trumpeters are playfully stereotyped as requiring.) So, yeah, they are kind of comparing the size of their... horns. And trying not to pass out.
