BMW teases us,I would love to see BMW build a real Monotracer, with doors and gyro's to hold it upright like Lit motors, enclosed 3 and 2 wheel vehicles will make up a large part of the market, the first with a ergonomic 2 or 3 wheeled to market that is affordable will it be Honda,BMW,Yamaha,or?
What is the point of creating such a contraption? 1 passenger : no better than a motorcycle except for the roof. Fuel consuption: must be very comparable to the Smart. I doubt that this can be used in the winter. So apart from drawing attention, I don't see why this should be more than a concept.
@frepi the production model can hold two people. It gets better gas mileage than a Smart car and looks a hell of a lot better. Every time I see someone driving a Smart car I think "Tard" because they look so stupid.
Even though its obviously taken from the Caver car I like it and it looker better than the Caver. I hope it sells and makes them cheaper than a Caver at £45,000. If you like this car check out the monotracer-e and that leans properly :D
@iksleib They don't need to tilt, they will be more stable than in a car. The momentum pushes down, not sideways. That's why motorcyclists don't need seatbelts too! :-)
@iksleib um i think gravity will keep the coffee in the cup. just take a bucket and fill it with water and spin it around your head. and you will see what i mean
come on. What's new about this? Carver did this years ago. Even if they did all the research from scratch. It's almost a carbon copy. Even the name isn't that clever. But still a cool vehicle hopefully they can make them cheaper!
@carpediem1956 I don't need to research smart car safety to realize how unsafe that golf cart is... especially when there's a million other larger vehicles on the road for every smart car.
I genuinely respect the engineers that designed and built this vehicle. Good work! But..I must say...what is the point of a vehicle such as this? The feeling of a motorcycle with the safety of a car? Well it's a bit of a short change on both, but that's just my opinion.
I find it quite funny reading all the nay-saying comments posted here. The first url above will provide more information about CLEVER but I can tell you from my personal experience of this project that it is not a rip-off of anything! It is the result of an EU-Funded reasearch project, with multiple partners, but predominantly the University of Bath and BMW. As with any vehicle development, comparisons were made, but CLEVER was designed completely from scratch!
It most likely uses Carver Engineerings DVC system for the tilting. I think it's a good thing, it's small and lightweight and aerodynamic, so the fuel economy will be great, and it's fun to drive, so people will actually buy it. If it's cheap as well, that will be a huge bonus, and if they increase the safety rating it will be even better. And a majority of all car journeys are made alone, so I don't really see the need to drive around with 4 unused seats in the car.
that looks SO much like those anoying hoverbikes from the original Quarantine game demo. The ones that you just had to drive down the wrong side of the highway to try and smash into the trucks!
Wish the Carver 1 still was around though, it was a 2 seater so its autmoatically better, even if the backseat was tigh it was still there
I really love this prototype. Alot of people don't realize a 3 wheel vehicle is classified as a motorcycle. I would buy in a heartbeat if they ever built one. I know bikers complain about the "cage" but think about it. You can have you're normal bike for commuting and then the Clever for when the weather not so good. I know a couple guys who keep a cheap honda in their drive just for those days. I personal would drive it all the time just for AC, Tilt, Carpool!
@manfromregina Too many motorcycle parts for my liking. WTF are motorbike wheels doing on the back? Car radials will last 4-5x as long as bike tyres and give less rolling resistance.
@mike47912 Have a look at the structure. The panels were mooted to be CF and there is a crash test of this vehicle elsewhere on youtube. This would cut thro' a car like a knife.
I looks like it'd take an acre to do a U-turn, and I'm not so sure I like the steering wheel as opposed to handle bars. What I'd like to see is what happens when the ass steps out on a wet curve and you have to counter-steer. Something tells me it's gonna be a a bad situation trying to correct for an oversteer, you'd be leaning the "wrong" way and gettin it back under control real iffy.
@505197 it would be really weird yeah, but i think that the front tyre will always lose grip before the rear tyres do, just because it is much smaller and offers much less grip. they could also have it equiped with ESP so you cannot oversteer it anyway ;)
Sure the idea was stolen - GM created a vehicle called the Lean Machine that was displayed at DisneyWorld in 1983 so nobody copied the Carver - they copied GM or bought the rights to the design.
I bet if Vandenbrink sues BMW and Mercedes for patent infringement, he'll easily have enough money to get back into the vehicle design business. He can later sue the smaller companies if his new factory break room needs a coffeemaker.
I like that three wheeler better than other car-motorcycle hybrids I've seen. I'm too chicken to ride a motorcycle, but this I'd be willing to get inside!
I know this whole idea comes from the carver. I'd like to know if this was official or a rip off...but my friends, your anger at this tells me that you guys probably don't know, but the Carver was officially discontinued, so at this point it's either this or some of the failing alternatives.
I have a completely new engineering idea for a three-wheeler. I've searched and searched, but I've never seen it. A three wheeled car that weighs less than 1000 lbs could go around the Brickyard in Indianapolis as fast as any race car that has run there. Contact me if interested in development.
@Gunner3210 LOL! Well, yes and no. This is probably A LOT more safe, as if you hit a slick spot on the road your not going to fishtail and be thrown from it at 60mph, fly off, use the road to erase parts of your body and then roll to your death... You would just possibly fishtale, crash and die instead....
You people need to do your homework before you post things like "Nissan stole this idea". Nissan "BOUGHT" this idea. The major differance between this and a carver is....wait for it....YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GET THIS IN THE U.S.A! You tards feel stupid and want one now dont you? Good luck getting a Carver because you won't. This "stolen idea" of a car will also only cost 2/3 of the carver also.
Why tilt the entire body of the cockpit? It's going to make for really dangerous negotiation of corners, when peripheral vision will be compromised and the chance of a collision will multiply drastically.
2007 this was posted; why can't I buy one of these??? The Vandenbrink Carver One wasn't successful because it cost too much to produce (and therefore buy - 30K GBP!). Surely someone like BMW could produce somthing like this more cheaply?
Is this really much more stable than if it didn't tilt, or does this just give you the illusion of stability - which would be dangerous. The speeds in the corners here look fairly slow.... compared to a motorcycle. Have you got it to lift a wheel in the corner and what did you do. What happened?
Country such as Singapore where the different between the car to a bike is USD24000 to USD1900. It is not hard to imagine why their government want to classify it as car with stupid reason because it has a steering wheel!
This is going to fail like the Carver One if BMW can't make up their mind to build it as a car or bike. The marketing department will have a hard time selling it to stupid country such as Singapore where the authority want to tax it as car because of the steering wheel.
BMW doesn't copy anyone. I'm sure they had this way before the carver company. Plus, bmw makes ultimate driving machines, i dont see carver making them... oh wait... they went bankrupt...
@robbie1490 - Where d'you think BMW got the 4x4 tech from? Yes, Land Rover so yes they do copy. BMW does NOT make the ultimate driving machines. That's just a trademark like Carlsberg probably make the best lager in the world. Would everyone agree to that? No way, it's shit.
@Cyberwwwizard You can say what you want. I work at BMW, and every car I've ever tested cannot compare to what BMW can deliver. It doesn't matter what you say, because 9 times out of 10 every customer Ive worked with picks the bmw.
@robbie1490 - don't worry, you'll get a decent job soon. It's just a matter of waiting out for something rewarding and good for you. BMW is VASTLY overrated. I've driven a lot of the models and a lot of other cars. BMW certainly hasn't got more than others.
@Cyberwwwizard I don't need a decent job. I don't work at the dealership, I work at the BMW plant of america. We make x5's, x3's, and use to make the z4. We have our opinions. My opinion, hardly any car, except for other European vehicles, can match a BMW.
nice idea....but you will never see one in your garage or on the road. There is a grave yard full of companies with great ideas that can never get them to production. I suspect Government is to blame.
I really like the prototype, but think that for daily needs it needs to carry at lease two people.. single-space vehicles only can be used on really light tasks
no one really is aware of the carver and those that are say its way under powered.

Cool idea, but its uglier than oprahs stretch marks.

It doesn't matter what you say, because 9 times out of 10 every customer Ive worked with picks the bmw.
robbie1490 1 year ago
