As I recall and have seen, he took bullets from the guys in front of his balcony of sorts, and Lord knows how many of those hit him, and then the Skull with the sawed-off shotgun shot him at close range. Then he falls in the pool and the blood splashes everywhere. I doubt he survived the shotgun blast at that range, let alone the many bullets from the other guys. :/

But the killer who killed Montana's friend climbed up to the room and shot Montana to the back with a doube barreled shotgun.

Then Montana felt some pain and fell to the water face down.
