Comprendo: El llamado "Arte total".
Wow, as a dramatic coloratura, I thought we had the most difficult music that Mozart has written, but this aria takes the cake! This shit is HARD! Good work Vargas!
agnellodei : Exactly which part sounds strained to you ? IDOM's tessitura is low for Vargas,so how could he sound strained? If you are referring to the high B natural at the end of the aria, it is not even Mozart's. The Munich version here is fiendishly difficult but RV made it even more so by adding his upward ornamentations at the end. Why would he add something that would give him trouble? This is a masterful and powerful performance, technically and musically. Do you know of a better version?
Quite amazing indeed! What is more amazing to me is - after all these mature, dramatic Mozart and Rossini roles, fifteen years of Verdi and other heavy stuff - Ramon Vargas will be singing a role he did twenty five years ago : Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni at Covent Garden in September. That will really show extraordinary technique of lightening and brightening his voice from the very robust and dark here, and singing soft, long legato lines with the flexibility of a much younger singer.
I think this is great, the original edition from the Munich 1781 premiere that wasn't done by Gedda, Domingo, et al., since he is lighter than Domingo he can move his voice around the coloratura. It is quite spot on and we shouldn't be overly critical on something this difficult.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't know... this is honestly what I expected of Vargas: mostly good, with some intonation difficulty, somewhat a lack of mobility to the voice, and general straining as the tessitura peaks.
You have a serious hearing problem. Get tested and use some hearing aids, You are missing a lot obviously. Vargas' ferocious florid singing almost killed Neptune. This is the best performance of the role by any tenor bar none, past or present. We may never hear this sound from any other tenor delivered with such technical mastery and passion. I wish that one day you will have the unique pleasure of hearing hearing this performance in an undistorted manner. Good luck!
Does it really get any better than this? Actually, as an owner of this DVD, I can say that it does: the transfer quality of this audio is rather poor, and Vargas's voice is even better than evidenced here. I can't think of a single singer that I'd like to hear sing Idomeneo live more than Vargas.
Because of youtube Vargas gets a great consideration. Good news ! I guess we can put Ramon as one of the best tenor ever. Late but not too late. I also think that people start or will start to be bored of the sexy way to listen singers...So Vargas will be one of the best tenor...of the past...
Despite efforts by various entities to generously promote young skinny singers with pretty boy looks at the expense of truly gifted singers who are not worried about putting on a few pounds, and despite shameful attempts by these upstarts and their fans to discredit Vargas' enormous talent and his physical appearance, it is Vargas who is continually developing and growing in stature as a unique and complete vocal artist in a class by himself, and a real credit to the world of opera.
Wow, watching this has made me gain new admiration for Vargas. Bravo!!!!!! Oh and your comment has opened my eyes, reminds me about how Jussi Bjorling gets little recognition sometimes because he is non-latin tenor.
I'm not quite sure what to make of your comment. The first half about admiration for Vargas sounds sincere, but the second half about Bjoerling getting little recognition because he was non-latin is something else. The entire opera world loves Bjoerling, myself included, and it has nothing to do with his Swedish origins. Likewise, I admire Vargas' artistry, not because of his latin background but because of the beauty of his voice, musical intelligence, elegant singing style, and modesty.
Vargas is incredible! Not only are his voice and phrasing gorgeous, he also sings the more difficult Vienna version of the aria, which not even Pavarotti and Domingo dared sing; amazingly enough Ben Heppner does.
Cool!! I didn't know that! I have the Pav version because it was reissued cheaply - I couldn't decide which version to go for before that - Rolfe Johnson or Domingo or Pav? Any suggestions? I do like the pav recording because it includes such a wonderful lineup - Nucci, Gruberova, Baltsa, and Popp!!!
If you are not bothered by the production, this DVD is a must have. The cast, chorus, orchestra and conductor are all excellent. Harteros, Kozena and Siurina compare favorably with the ladies you mentioned. With due respect to the tenors you mentioned, one feels that the role of Idomeneo perfectly suits the strengths of Vargas. He has the ideal weight, color, power and beauty of the voice fit for a king; total command of the virtuosic writing, fiery passion, musicality and ability to act as well
whoa
this is intense
he just blew my mind
and that Nettuno dude is really creepy, like it should be, very threatening like the aria says

anselgoya 2 years ago
saludos.
