I know as you say how they are treated plays its part - a big part infact, but the Fords, certainly the older ones were deffinatly more prone to rust. The Mondeo seems to be a bit better than other Fords, and for some reason I think they seem to be either very good for not rusting, or quite bad - few are 'in between'.
@mondeo116 Im sorry, but your user name has the word 'mondeo' in it. Yes there are a couple of areas that can rust on a 600 is neglected or any damage to the paintwork gets ignored, but the mondeos (certainly of that era) rust a damn site more! And before you ask, no I havnt owned a 600, my dad owned has owned 2x 600's, a mondeo and several other fords (sierra, 2 fiestas, 2 escorts). I myself have owned a Rover 400 and also a 200 - none of the Rovers rusted like any of the fords.
@ash7990 Yea my username is mondeo because ive owned several mondeos plus other fords, not one of them has suffered rust, probably cos they are well cared for by myself, i know two guys at work who had 600's, both had an incredible amount of rust especially on the rear quarter panel on the arches. Ive never seen owt like it. Yes fords will rust- if you dont look after them!
@mondeo116 Dont get me wrong, I like old Fords (not the newer mundane stuff) infact one of my favourite cars ever is the MK1 Fiesta.....some might ask 'why?' Yes it is slow/noisy/naff etc. compared to a modern car, however they had so much character - unlike any newer Fiesta, or any modern car for that matter. I loved mine, but my god did they rust! As did dads Sierra, newer fiestas and escorts.

A quality car by any standard. Better looking than most of today's new cars.
