  • Oldsmobile helped manufacture machine guns for the Nazis

  • @sleepytweeker General Motors Opel Division of Germany had the designation of suppying tank parts for Nazi war machine, Which had nothing to do with Oldsmobile

Oldsmobile became one of the Allies' prime sources of artillery and other heavy gunnery, along with the munitions they would rain down on the aggressors. For five years, beginning in 1940, Oldsmobile was America's gunslinger, embracing the slogans "Fire-Power is Our Business!" and "Keep 'em Firing!" as its company zeitgeist.

  • sounds great! only thing I would do is put a holley pro jection on it I hate carbs.

  • wish I could get that idle out of the rocket 350!

  • Love that idle!

  • nice idle! I would to drop a olds 455 in my Caprice wagon! now has a 307 olds and it's tired. how much that cost to build that motor?

  • How much horses are in the stock engine

  • That is the way a cam should sound.

  • @Mastahscott You are correct, But that meaning of 442 was from 1965 on, as 1965 was the first year 442 got the 400 ci engine and offered an automatic transmission.

4 Barrel - 4 Speed - Dual Exhaust was the original meaning in 1964

  • no it wasnt , it was 400 , 4 barrel dual exhaust , because they were 4 spd and automatics.

  • sweet

  • Original meaning was 4 Barrel - 4 Speed - Dual Exhaust ( 1964 )

  • 442 4barrel 4bolt main 2 dual exhaust right

  • Alright thanks sir. I recently tore my engine down to overhaul it,I've found that whoever had the engine before me has placed some .030 aluminum pistons in it along with a beefy crankshaft.

  • 17VINCE that is a pretty mild cam you have chosen to use, For street/strip use I would suggest a dual plane intake to make use of the low end torque this motor produces, As for exhaust 2 1/2 inch off the header collectors will work just fine and easier to get to fit especially if your going to route out to back bumper, Horsepower and Torque are relevant to how well you match up your parts for want you want the motor to do, In other words Cam design, Compression Ratio, Heads used Ect.

  • Congratulation sir!!..I haven't entered a show yet..I have jus one more question if you don't mind,I've noticed you know alot about the olds motor,I was wondering is a 750 edelbrock carb and torker intake a good combo for a 455 with a 268 comp cam and 3 inch exhaust??..do you think you can give me just an estimate of how much hp and tq I'll be making??..thanks

  • That is a Edelbrock Performer 750 cfm, Now running #4780 800 Holley HP and getting ready to try a Jet Performance Stage 3 modified Quadrajet 800 cfm.

Need to get new video up as the car has paint and interior done now.

Also got best of show at last car show i put it in

  • @eewood455 Did you try the Jet carb? How did it work out?

  • Hey there, what size carburetor are u running there?

  • Very nice sounds great !!! cant say enough just love it!! that cam and compression ratio makes it pop, did you have to take out the inner springs for break in?

  • hell I wonder if I cant drop this into my dodge challenger rt?? hmmmm

  • sounds amazing. what other trannys bolt up to this motor? any 5 or 6 speeds??? thanks.

  • No this car came with 400 cubic inch and with 4 speed was rated at 350 HP.

This is a resto/mod numbers matching as far as transmission and rearend.

This is a 69 455 F1 block with ported C big valve heads a copy of a Dick Miller build that should produce around 500 HP at the flywheel and 580 ft/lbs at 3600 RPM

BTW the 455 was available in 1968 442 But only in Hurst/Olds in 68 and 69.

1970 GM authorized the 455 in any midsized car.

People swapped motors all the time back then.

  • was this engine stock for your 69? my dad had one with the 455 NOT a hurst or w40, is was a plain jane car crank windows, manual brakes, no AC, only the necessities to make it go. found out it was number 13 of 1213 made because as to my knowledge the 455 didn't actually come out until 1970 but i think didn't put it in the 69 models until about mid 69 but by all means please correct me if i'm wrong i just wish i could find one similar to his and give it to my dad for his birthday or something

  • gives me eargasms lol i want this engine in my car

  • @Mega426hemi depends, what kinda set up u want,do you want it to run strip,or street rod, daily driver with power??..and do u want to save money or on a budgit?

  • on a 350 olds flat top pistons prefer forged if running NOS # 5 heads if you can find any otherwise buy a set of edelbrock aluminum heads cam choice yours street or strip use.

modifiy for olds oiling issues (Do Your Homework) or you will destoy what you built.

Olds engine aren't cheap to build but you can out perform small block chevy and produce more torque end result

But an properly Olds engine is a true work of art.

In my opinion (Well Worth The Effort)

  • nice man> my motor had a crower beast in it before i rebuilt it. kind of the same theory as the thumpr cam

  • Someone told me that the 307 block can be bored & stroked to a 455.

He said that olds really didnt have as "big block" per say and that the 307 is the same block as the 350 & 455...

is there any truth to this??

  • @o56kid

The 307,350 and 403 are considered small block and the 400,425 and 455 are considered big block but there the same block with the difference of the 400,425 and 455 have a taller block (raised deck height) which means the intakes will be different. The small block is 12" wide and the big block is 14" and thats because of its raised deck. The internals are different too.

  • Comment removed

  • @moparcar100 LOL.

Do you know anything about the olds cubic inch motors? I know chevy made 307 and 350 and 400's but no 403's and 425's and 455's .

If you were paying attention I was only speaking of the oldsmobile engines Not chevy engine.

307,350,403 OLDSMOBILE engines are Small Blocks.

400,425,455 OLDSMOBILE engines are Big Blocks.

I never said a 350 Chevy Block was the same as a 350 OLDS.

Small Block Olds intake width 12"

Big Block Olds intake width 14"

    Due to raised deck.

  • @sullie35 i have a slight disagreement as far as the internals are different to. NOT ALL of the internals are different. AND you can use many parts from a small block on a big block and vice versa.

  • @VDragulaV

I dont know what your disagreeing about VDragulaV...... I never said anything about the internal parts being different or the same or anything to that effect.

Im stating facts with actual sizes instead of you saying the manifold is wider.

Like I said before...350 Olds has a 12" wide intake and the Bigblock Olds is 14" wide because of the raised deck.

    Thank you.

  • @sullie35 you said at the end of this statement that the internals are different too. It's right there I see it!! The last sentance there! Thats the only thing I disagreed with but you decided to get rude. And talk about a comment i made to someone else. Which you seem to do to alot of people here. I guess we should all bow to your superior knowledge on the subject. See I can be rude too!!

  • @VDragulaV I never said that ALL the internals are different! 350 olds pistons and cranks and rods are different then a 400,425,455, But yes you can you the heads on either engine and cams and distributers ect.

Sorry for not being fine line razor edge specific for you.

  • @o56kid As far as can you bore and stroke a 307 to a 455? NO! if you culd do that then Oldsmobile would have done that rather than make a taller block! All one has to do is look at a 350 next to a 455 and you can see there is a physical difference between to two engines. The manifold is wider on the "Big Block"

  • @VDragulaV Thanks dude. .

  • If your looking for a dual quad edelbrock #065 intake PM me.

  • mine made 465hp at 5200, 524tq at 4200 running fat at 11.8-12.0:1 air/fuel on 93 pump, 29 degrees timing.

  • I have a similar combo that im waiting to come from the states.Keep up the good work, sounds mean lol

  • nice rumpity rump idle very cool...

  • real olds guys know theyre motor i have ppl come up to me always asking you have a exhaust leak? and i tellum every time its a oldsmobuile lifter they all do it some time in theyre day lol

  • @dontemailme227 hahaha i get the same thing too. I'm only 21, but i grew up around American muscle. I went to take my advanced road test in my 1/2 ton and the examiner said i had an exhaust leak and told me i couldn't use it. I told him that's the way it's supposed to sound and that it complied with all noise regulations. He said no. I got a refund and walked away. good times.

  • by the way, where is this engine idling at??

  • @17VINCE Idle is set at 800 RPM

  • @eewood455 thats nice,im not very familiar with camshafts,so i was curious as to how you set it to idle this low when the website says the rpm range is aroun 2000-6000...haha

  • @17VINCE 2000 to 6000 RPM is the power band where you make the most power.

Bigger cam will raise the power band to get a stronger upper end charge at higher RPM.

With bigger cam you also sacrifice some lower end torque, Bigblock motors due to their size (Cubic inches) naturally produce huge amounts of torque so you can give up some torque for RPM without needing lower gears to compensate like a smallblock with big cam.

  • @eewood455 ooohhh i get it now!..thanks a ton, youre the first person i've talked to that knows something about camshafts haha,i've been trying to figure out how to get cams to idle right etc.

  • @eewood455 hey there, thanks for the info,it was a big help,i went and put a 268H in my 455 yesterday,i thought i would let you know that i put a video up of it idling, check it out on my profile and let me know what you think..thanks for the help..

    Vince

  • oh and about what rpm range is this engine idling at in this video??

  • i love the sound of this beast, nice choppy idle is music to my ears haha, what color did you paint it?..oh and check out my 71 cutlass sx on my page, i just put a paint job on mine, red with white stripes, its almost finished about to on the road next month and will be posting updated vids..

    Vince

  • @17VINCE Thanks mine is white with dark red stripes, red interior, red wing,Currently finishing up on suspension mods and brake upgrades to disc.

I will put up new walk around video soon

  • woooww i love the sound of this beast, nice choppy idle is music to my ears haha, what color did you paint it?..oh and check out my 71 cutlass sx on my page, it just got a paint job red with white stripes hope to be done with it next month, will be posting updated vids in about a month..keep in touch

    Vince

  • Do I hear a exhaust leak?

  • @originalmrrocker If you can detect an exhaust leak on an engine running open headers you must have a really keen sense of hearing.

Your probably hearing a little lifter noise, I had two lifters collapse about a month after this video was shot

  • Pretty nice sound.

I prefer sound Oldsmobile Rocket 455 form all engines over the world. I reminds me most Harleys V-twin. Great engine & sound.

I read about DOHC, 4 valve Hemi heads Oldsmobile 455 experimental engine form late 60's (W-43/OW-43 i think). It can make 700hp.

I wonder if some one will build up Olds 455 OHV 4 valve Hemi engine or at least OW-43? Maybe some day:)

  • Thank You

Car is in paint now hope to be finished by May 2010, This has taken me 2 years to do this car as it is a DIY home built done on a budget.

    Looks Awesome Now!

Can't wait till car show season gets underway as this car will stand out amid a sea of Chevelle's and Camaro's.

I wanted to build something different than what everybody and their brother has.

This car is a true 442 less than 22,000 built compared to over 75,000 Chevelle SS produced

Back in the day Chevelle was cheaper to buy

  • How much power approximately does a setup like this make? I never see/hear any info on engines with factory heads... Just see a lot of them in non realistic build ups (for me at least) with Edlebrock or some other aftermarket heads. I keep waffling over putting a 455 Olds or a BBC in my Regal. I want 400-450 reliable horses without having to do crazy compression, or spending a ton on aftermarket heads. What do you think yours does?

  • Check out Carcraft 500 horsepower combos article, Mine is a copy of their olds 455 build

Mine should be easy 450 HP to 500 HP

Heads are what makes the difference, Mine full port and polish big valve C heads.

With unmodified heads you still can hit 400 Hp and 500 ft/lb Torque and still have an impressive motor, Then save your money and buy heads later if you want more power.

Chevy still cheaper to build due to parts cost.

Buick 455 can be killer motor too

I say keep it all Buick if possible

  • I'll check it out thanks. The reason I am keeping Olds at the top of my list is because a lot more Olds 455's are available than Buick 455's. And two, Regals from 78-87 came with Olds motors to begin with... And since my stock 307 is going to bite the dust one of these days, I am trying to pick my best bang for the buck motor that can make an easy 400 horses+. Since an Olds BB is an easy swap, it seems to be the logical choice for me, but the big block Chevy is always an option. =P

  • very nice. im in the process of building a 455 right now. i notice that is in a truck i was wondering what kind of headers those are and if you got a part number? i was worried headers wouldnt fit in my 85 chevy but i guess they will

  • @edl350

Are you commenting on wrong video?

This is in 69 Olds 442 (see video title)

But in answer to your question

Olds engine headers on your truck will be trial and error fitting Maybe they will maybe they won't without major modification.

I got a set of Olds W and Z performance cast iron exhaust manifolds I will sell you for $200.00

with down pipes then just tie your exhaust into them

    Good Luck on your project

  • @eewood455 what about pontiac? i believe pontiac is a better engine overall than buick or oldsmobile

  • I did not put this video up to get into a debate over what manufacturer produced a better engine design all have their Merits and Shortcomings.

I prefer Olds, You prefer Pontiac and somebody else prefers Ford (Big Deal) I like everything as long as it's a powerhouse and fun to drive ain't that what it's all about.

I've owned Olds,Buick, Pontiac and Chevy all my life, Oh and a couple Fords too.

Olds 455 stock produces 500 ft/lbs Torque@3200 RPM only beat by Buick 455 at 525

    GMs Torque Kings

  • By the way I looked at your channel and I saw no uploads of anything car related except how to take a radio out of a corsica.

Where does all this vast knowledge of Pontiac being better come from is that what your buddy told you or you read it in a magazine or what?

You looked at my engine video so I assume you do like cars, Yet you come on here and try to bag on another mans engine when you can't show you got anything that is even remotely superior to what I got

    Put Up or Shut Up

  • i didnt mean to offend you or disrespect your engine man

  • Thank You !

    No Harm / No Foul

If you are in the process of building your own car or engine then I welcome you to the sport and wish you the best of luck with it.

Actually small block chevy is cheaper to build and is far easier to get performance parts for.

The BOP engines are in a class of thier own and more expesive to build.

What Grinds My Gears is seeing a classic GTO/442/Buick GS car with a Chevy engine.

I know it's still GM but it just ain't right.

    Have a good day

    .

  • Music to my ears

  • i built an cause i wanted something diferent. my 455 is a full roller motor. i do recommend using a steel mount on the left side. i crack a trans on a chassic dnyo from the motor twisting. but it was fun watching peoples face at light when that motor twist.

  • Looking forward to videos of your builds.

A lot of people have no idea what kind of power an Olds big block can produce.

They can not only get off the porch and run with the big dogs But can run quicker without needing help from nitrous, turbos or any other power adders.

    Olds Rockets Kick Ass

  • SORRY But you have to agree that there are a lot of negative comments on youtube from people who just want to bag on something you have worked hard on and yet when you look at their page you see nothing but idiot crap.

Your G heads are same 80 cc as my C heads did you use flat top pistons, I used L2323F listed as 10.50 to 1 comp ratio but with 80cc heads should place me at about 9.5 to one comp ratio

    or am I overlooking something.

Great to hear from someone that appeciates real rocket power

  • What heads are you using on your wifes cutlass ?

461 BBO with 12 lbs boost off 871 blower ? That is a lot of pressure on bottom end of long stroke Olds, What mods were done on bottom end ?

BB Olds motors don't take well to supercharging without major modifications

Upload some videos of your cars so everybody can see what you say you have otherwise it's all talk

A lot of people on here claim to have This or That yet cannot show proof of what they claim to own.

Believe it when I see it.

  • 455 rule! Damn that sounds mean!

  • Oldsmobile engines under rated ?

Oldsmobile built the first high compression

engines in the world' they knew what they were doing. I am running a 69 455 block at 464 cubes

with Keith Black pistons,Engle Cam ect ect ect. Holley carbs don't match up well on Oldsmobiles' they never have. I run one of

the Edelbrock tuned 850 CFM Quadra-jets

    with a 512 lift cam,Mondello aluminum heads

with roller rockers through 410 gears and it runs great on the strip and at the cruises.

  • Nice....

Call Cliff Ruggles up for a Quadrajet.. That Edelbrock clone carb is killing that motor..

  • That Edelbrock carb is no longer on this engine just swapped out last week, Now has Holley #4780 800 Double Pumper and boy did that make a difference in how this thing runs or should I say Screams !!! when I hit the throttle.

    Thank you for commenting

  • Ooops, I didn't read your post below about just using the Edelbrock for brake in. Sorry....

I think the big Olds is one of the most underrated solid performance motors out there.. I'll bet that car hauls!!!

Those big 455s need a lot of cam duration to feed them.. I have a 308/320 cam in my Poncho 462 and it's almost on the mellow side but great for the street...

    Good luck!

  • nice i have a 1984 cadillac sedan deville project im currently putting a olds 455 410 hp motor turbo 350 hydramatic in it 277 rear end and some people say i wont beat anybody in a race i think there crazy what do you think? i think i will win in the long run with those gears being so high lol......

  • You will need a lower gear Say 3.42 or 3.73

I am a purist and I would have put in cadillac engine 472 or 500 cubic inch plenty of performance parts available for those engines.

    Good Luck

  • Damn that's a nice Olds. Let's take it for a drive!

  • hella sick set up, only thing i would change is the intake manifold. RPM performer greatly improves top end.

  • Probably Keep manifold But I am going to change carb to Holley 800 double pumper once rings are broke in

  • awsome what is your intake manifold?

    how much HP you push?

  • Manifold is Edelbrock # 2155 Performer for Olds 455 excellent street manifold with great throttle response 0 to 5500 RPM.

Never been near a dyno to see what this motor actually produces in horsepower But horsepower is not what an Olds engine is about, It's all about Torque.

Carrol Shelby once said Horsepower sells cars/Torque is what wins races.

Pretty much copy of Carcraft Olds 455 build.

One thing I can tell you is this thing is a torque monster and a blast to drive.

  • Look at the equation for hp.

    hp= tq * rpm / 5250

The more tq you have the more hp you have! Thats why torque wins races

  • LOVE DAT IDLE MAN

,yup tourquey engines last longer too.

  • is that a flat tappet cam

  • Yes it is flat tappet hydraulic from Crower, It is their Beast series of cams.

Listed as 304H, Specs are .304" advertised duration.

    Intake @ .50" 234 duration/ 520 lift

    Exhaust @ .50" 244 duration/ 544 lift

    Installed straight up

Power Band 2000 RPM to 4800 RPM

    So far I like it.

    Check out my other videos

    Thanks

  • 4800rpm..Nice, that engine will never hurt itself. Like you said, it's all about the torque! What compression?

  • Around 9.5 to 1 compression ratio

Power should be right at 500 hp at around 5,400 rpm with peak torque of around 570 to 580 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. This is not a high-winding package, which means shifting a big Olds at 5,700 to 5,800 rpm will deliver excellent results of high 11s at 115 mph in a 3,800-pound Cutlass with a gear ratio taller than 3.73. With gobs o' torque, you don't need much gear.

With a 3.42 gear I should be able to break into 12's and still have a car that is highway friendly'

  • If your runnnin a 350/400 tranny, you could benefit by going to a built 200r4, which would allow you to go to the bigger gear ratio, and get ok hwy mileage with that cam?

  • This car is a factory 4 speed car of which only about 7,780 were produced in 69.

Plus this car represents the base roots of what 442 stood for back when muscle cars ruled the streets

If I had wanted an automatic car I would have stated with one.

I've always had 4 speed muscle cars since I was 16 years old, Something about rowing through the gears makes my heart beat a little faster and with a high output, high torque motor it's a total rush.

    Thanks Anyway

  • this mutha is ready to eat some rice! what size carb is that, looks kinda small?

  • Carb is Edelbrock performer 750 manual choke with tuning kit.

Does look small, Only due to width of motor.(Works great for street car)

    Thanks

  • NICE!!!!

  • Love the sound. There is nothing like the sound of a v8 with a lumpy cam. Makes me look forward to summer and the test and tune nights.

  • Agreed, especially the sound of Olds/Buick/Pontiac motors

  • damn uncle sony, shit looks pretty good, cant wait to go for a ride in that
