The rotary is for a seasoned professional. The flex is more controllable and does not work as fast. If you are brand new to machine polishing (I assume to use them on a car finish) maybe the Porter Cable 7424XP is the place to start. It is very gentle and forgiving, and can give amazing results, but it works more slowly. And the Porter Cable won't leave holograms in the finish, as can happen with a rotary if you are not careful.
