  • Surprised this archies series hasn't made it to DVD.

  • The "Retro" channel is now showing episodes -- not sure of the time, though.

Loved the cartoon, but man, did it have an annoying theme song.

    "Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Ssssssssssssssssssssss of Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrchieeeeeeeeeeeee...."

  • Qubo should have been perfect to rerun "U.S. of Archie".

  • thank you for posting this song. i saw this episode when i was maybe 6 or 7 and i never forgot it. there is so much negativity on the internet but it makes me a little less existentially lonely to know that others share similar warm childhood memories....... i wonder if sponge bob, hannah and their ilk will inspire similar feelings in today's kids when they grow up?....probably, although i don't see why...

  • Was this from the George Washington Carver episode --- where they had to find alternate uses for peanuts? I haven't seen this in 30+ years.

  • Yes!

  • @testodude You would have, if you used that VCR made out of cashews. Thanks for loading this Pterixa; I only remember the Thomas Paine episode.

Note to Reggie: You're playing a bass, stop strumming and start picking!

  • Wow....Never heard this song before. This is definatly one of my faves next to One Big Family and The Factory.

  • We should start some sort of campaign to get Boomerang to get this show in their line-up!! Just go to Boomerang/Cartoon network website and scroll all the way to the bottom to the contact us and just click on it! Then fill out the request! It's that simple!

  • And for Canadians: Teletoon Retro!

  • Actually, that's a pretty good song.

  • I used to like the opening theme from US of Archie. It was on Youtube a year or so ago, but not now.

  • I liked that one, too !

  • i remember the closing credits...this was pretty good

  • The Giver ep was definitely my fave, along with The Underground Railroad.

  • this was the end of the archies they not usein the voice who sang in 1969 new singers is why this show died...and when tryed return that was it....was just not same again... This was the worst done..I sorry but it was bad

  • Do they have The U.S. of Archie on DVD anywhere?

  • Not right now.

  • Maybe 2009 U.S. of Archie will be released on DVD in a complete series set unless Cartoon Network and/or Boomerang picks up all the Filmation Archie cartoon series rights.

  • Instead of releasing this on DVD why can't the cartoon network just rerun the episodes?

  • Because, as far as I know, Cartoon Network doesn't have the rights to do so. This was shown on the Odyssey channel, now known as Hallmark.

  • @mrmoore1970 Retro TV runs US of Archie in the Archies rotation.

  • do you have the episode that featured the Archie gang at Kitty Hawk with Wright Brothers first flight in 1903? I haven't seen that one since the show originally aired.

  • Afraid not. But I'm sure they'll put out a DVD sooner or later.

  • Great post...do you have the opening theme?

  • I wish I did.

This is awesome as hell! Cartoons giving props to George Washinton Carver as well as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. They don't make cartoons like this anymore! Thanks for this clip!

Think of the 1976 Bicentennial and the September 11, 2001 tragedies that helped spark the nostalgic American History/Patriotic movement or something like that!

    aalong64

    I really like this song.

I remember this episode-pretty cool. Thanks for posting. Interesting to hear Hinnis here talking about his singing on these shows, too.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but if you go to the Archie Comics web site, in their shop section, they have several DVDs or VHS tapes that feature the some classic Archies episodes, including an episode from The U.S. of Archie called The Rough Riders, which dealt with Theodore Roosevelt (before he was president) and the time he led the Rough Riders.

Tom: I wish you had a music CD of the US of Archie/New Archie Sabrina Hour songs produced by Jackie Mills that you sang.

Also: Did you ever sing when you were on tour as the Archies some Brady Kids songs also produced by Jackie Mills (The Brady Kids cartoon used recycled Archie footage!)

  • hinnis

    Heine71:

I have some of them on a DVD, and a few other on a very old VHS recording which were recorded when they aired (not very good quality, though). We never sang any of the Brady Kids songs. We did Sugar Sugar, some of the songs from the US of Archie show, and the rest were covers (e.g. Beatles, Elton John, etc.).

Thanks for the information and for making my childhood and those of many others wonderful! :)

    Scarlet:

Thank you for your very nice reply. By the way, I still perform on a semi-regular basis at a nightclub in Long Beach, California. Last night another member of the Doodletown Pipers (Dean Chapman) came in and we sang together for the first time in years. It was a blast! Take care.

    Tom

  • You're welcome, Pterixa. And incidentally, the title of this episode was the same as the song called The Giver. Btw, George Washington Carver was voiced by John Erwin (who also was the voice of Reggie).

  • R-C: hinnis

Scarlet, Screen credits were only given to Jackie Mills, the musical producer. I wasn't given screen credit for the Groovie Goolie episodes I sang, either. I was introduced to Jackie by Ward Ellis, who owned the group The Doodletown Pipers. I was a singer in the Pipers. When I left to go on my own, Ward set up a meeting with Jackie. We also toured as The Archies. One night we even played a concert with the Pointer Sisters, Seals & Crofts, & Michael Gray (of Shazam!).

    Heine71:

Actually, Jackie was the producer of the recordings, not the singer. Jackie was a good producer, and an excellent jazz drummer, but he never sang on any of the shows.

    Tom

P.S. On a couple of the US of Archie songs, you will notice a female back-up vocal. That was Wenndy MacKenzie, who was my wife at the time. Wenndy is still a very respected vocal coach in Los Angeles.

I have a question: If this was you singing in place of Ron Dante, why weren't you or your signing partner given a voice credit in the series?

    nnaw

Cool, Tom, so that was you singing the songs on Groovie Goolies? I always wondered who it was, you did a great job!!

    heine71

The pre FOX/ABC Family Channel airing cutout the some of the second verse part and the repeated chorus!

  • Retro-Comments:hinnis

I sang the vocals on this series by overdubbed myself several times. The reason they have a rather "unique" sound is because my producer at the time (Jackie Mills) felt that my voice was a little "mature" for cartoons, so he sped up the vocals slightly to make me sound younger. I also sang some of the Groovie Goolies segments. All songs were recorded at Larrabee Sound in Hollywood. -- Tom McKenzie

Jackie Mills replaced Ron Dante as the singer for the last 2 Filmation Archie shows - "U.S. of Archie" and "The New Archie/Sabrina Hour" (a/k/a "Sabrina the Superwitch/The Bang Shang Lalapalooza Show"). Jackie Mills was best known for writing the songs for the Brady Bunch Kids as performed on Filmation's "Brady Kids" cartoon series before taking over the songs for Filmations last 2 Archie series.

    ArchieandJughead

All Archie songs are the best! :D

  • Retro-Comments:duffnationusa

Did Ron Dante get a voice change during this song? Yikes?

    Scarletspeedster68

No, because he didn't work on this series. I'm not sure who replaced him to be honest. :-?

  • Retro-Comments: bull705

In a way it was somewhat ambitious.Covering american history and trying to combine it with humor was pretty tough given some subject matter(specifically this and the Harriet Tubman episode).

    Scarletspeedster68

True, but given that Filmation was criticized for some of their ealrier shows which were considered violent (tame by today's standards), they did try to craete shows that had a moral lesson (such as Fat Albert and Shazam! among them).

  • Retro-Comments:Scarletspeedster68

Love the video, but I wished they would have posted the original one in its entirety. I also wished they would show the full episode from this least liked (well, for some anyway) series. At any rate, thanks for posting!

Archie, Jughead, etc. are the best!
