  • ok the rockband guitar demo was epic!

  • dude that is mega cool if youre into the electronic aspects of music. people pay tens maybe hundreds of dollars for devices to do exactly what that arduino can do when programmed correctly. makes me wanna try it myself

  • Comment removed

  • @ChrisD4335 missing the point of the vid aren't you? Mr 4335

  • this guy is fuckin awesome or totaly insane

  • or you can just plug in the usb to your computer, simpler

  • The guitar's whammy bar works in the wrong direction! That should have been a dive (decrease in audio frequency)! :)

  • Can we write "void loop () { " in more than one way? if os how?

  • almost every projects based on arduino.......not good for get the knowledge

  • thats sweet.. so you could basically make a usb flash drive into an mp3 player?

  • i must learn his ways lol i feel like a noob a tech now

  • I think he is having a hangover ...

  • I know hes trying his best to be fun and cool but hes as fun and cool as herpes.

  • Mybe ..

  • GREAT!

  • i have no ide what he'd tsliking bout'. i just like the shenny output

  • I have that arduino and that keyboard...!

  • I love your videos Collin , pretty cool, and inspiring.

  • His specific look. I know I seen that before. Some character in some movie. He looks like him. What was name?

  • @gredangeo He reminds me of Graeme Gardiner from the Goodies.

  • @gredangeo eureka

  • why do all nerds wear glasses.

  • @speedmasteruk1 same reason why skanks wear provocative

  • dude the way that u talk is so interesting

  • wich is better? arduino uno, duemilanove or atmega1280?

  • @dragoninfire123 You cant compare em. What do you want to do? Emulate USB natively? Hack around? Have many I/O pins available without the need to use shift registers?

  • Colin is high.

  • @2000anas2000 Yeah right. First, learn to spell. Second, You are spoiled. 2nd in class and you get $50? Damn spoiled brat. You deserve $5 or a McDonalds meal for that. Third, You CANNOT tell me what I can or cannot do on the Internet. I can comment about how spoiled and stupid you are all day long. You cannot do anything about it. Deal with it.

  • 你好厉害啊

  • Nice work

  • Not hard:P

  • @1lIIiliIi1iillIiiII1 create your account just to troll or what?

  • @1lIIiliIi1iillIiiII1 he is not a hipster, he is a genuine "nerd"

  • awesome

  • SUB

    FOAR

  • It's funny how the keyboard messed up the white balance.

  • Comment removed

  • lol, i have the same keyboard.

  • loose the music

  • this dude should be on 'Flight of the conchords'

  • the link is not functionable.

  • very nice... but first I stock cause you are looking like Elton John many years ago... see youtube.com/watch?v=iEVzzx1tIS4

  • que bakan

  • can a complete idiot get to grips with Arduino because I've always struggled with programming but like this concept gadgetty thing

any pointers on where to start as a complete novice ? money no object (cos this stuff is cheap!)

  • @sweetypie000 the arduino forum, I'd advise you to do some slightly simpler projects for now, just so you get the hang of code, and more importantly so you get the hang of making the most of all the help material out there.

  • is it possible to add a midi in on the arduino/shield for slaving to midi clock?

  • That is sweet and another cool Arduino project, Hackers was right, micro computing, especially ARM and RISC are going to change everything

  • thanks makemagazine...

  • Comment removed

  • how do you program arduino to repeat the values back to you?

  • cool

  • Loving the Asimov sideburns.

  • My friends dad used to work with alot of aurduino boards. He has like; 50 at his house

  • My Arduino finally arrived! It was travelling all the way from China. Now I'm ready to make first projects.

  • what the hell are people bitching about the price of arduinos for? If you think the boards are expensive you have probably picked the wrong hobby if you want to develop anything that is cool!

  • wow, this guy should really calm down some...

  • What if instead of using something that is already basically an instrument for midi, you used something else completely random? Like a usb mouse?

  • I got to get myself an arduino

  • sometimes i feel like im the only normal looking person who is into electronics.

  • @AnnoyingXboxer Your view on looking normal is different than others.

  • @UprootedEagle I was not intending to insult anyone. I simply was saying everyone into electronics tends to look like someone who likes electronics.. It commonly attracts certain social groups of people...

  • @AnnoyingXboxer lol your not alone

  • @AnnoyingXboxer You're still in the denial phas3.

  • Comment removed

  • I love smart people! Theres always something new to learn in electronics.

  • Gargamel!

  • is Collin semi-retarded , he sounds it.

  • @TheMrStacie shut up you

  • @TheMrStacie - Verbal ability is not the only hallmark of intelligence. Can you re-purpose USB musical instruments via midi? His video is well constructed, contains his own theme music, and his message is clear, regardless of the number of post-production edits. So, while your own content is useful, it's not nearly as polished. I suspect you're jealous. I'd rather watch a Collin's Lab for its content than that topic-useless poser-dweeb KipKay, any day.

  • wouldn't that only work for midi devices? or does the vox thing make use of any signal?

  • I'm dig'n these vids thank 4 sharing

  • covrrrr = converter

  • ok first the sound is horrible and second i agree with techyknowsbest the arduinos are really expensive

  • @imawsome511 the arduinos are NOT expensive. if you cant afford a 20 dollar device, then you are 11 years old.

  • @TechBoywii i am 11

  • @imawsome511 then you shouldnt have a youtube account, but well, that is off topic. so they arent expensive.

  • @TechBoywii -- How useless is an arduino if all we can do is blink a single LED? It's less about the arduino and more about the expense of hobby necessities surrounding it: decent soldering gun, vent, solder, bread boards, ic's, components... These can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars, the more you get into it. While the board is inexpensive, the initial investment for this as a serious hobby can be substantial.

  • @gr33nman what??? electronic components cost cents!! And usually come in packs of 5 or 10.

  • @kriptonis If you buy at radio shack, and all you need are a few resistors, it's a dollar or two. But when you start making your own projects, you add things like battery holders, gendered connectors, headers, enclosures, jacks, breakout boards, IC's, flux, solder, a decent soldering unit, a vent, etc., it adds up to some real coin. The independent parts are inexpensive, but you need a lot of them before you have a decent electronics 'lab'. And now you need an arduino and some shields...

  • @gr33nman Ahh but if you need those kind of things you are doing cool stuff. And the satisfaction of say, building a robot butler, will more than compensate for the monetary losses :)

  • @kriptonis -- imawsome511's original implication was that we are all trust-fund kiddies with pots of money to buy whatever cool thing we want. Unfortunately most of us are not. We have to budget for it, both time and money. 'Satisfaction' may be a little further down the road if you have medical bills or tuition payments or your kids need braces. This is a hobby for people with ample means, a steady job and a life. Fewer of us daily are attaining the 'Murkin Dream'. This is my point.

  • @gr33nman well, tell that to steve jobs, doing his first experiments on his macintosh project in his garage back in 1976.

These kind of hobbies are for people with the inventor spirit in them. A real inventor may choose to not eat that day if it means getting the part he needs. And we are talking about a few hundred bucks. Arduino costs 15$ or you can download the blueprints and buy components and build one yourself, for a little less. Resistors/diodes/leds/transistors cost 1$ for a pack of 10.

  • @kriptonis Then we agree. Minimum buy-in is a few hundred bucks. Dedication and sacrifice is key. QED.

  • @gr33nman Kriptonis never said minimum buy in is a few hundred bucks. Don't put words in peoples mouths. Kriptonis is absolutely right about everything he has told you. I use Ebay my self for my components

  • @mattg889 -- Erm... Actually... He did...

Quoting kryptonis: 'And we are talking about a few hundred bucks.'

I believe you owe me an apology. :)

  • @gr33nman Oh, I do apologize. You are correct, he did say that. Looks like I read right over that sentence, lol.

He is still right about how cheap you can do all this though. I'm not sure why he was talking about a few hundred bucks. because he is wrong about that then... Granted if your building a custom motherboard it may get into the hundreds, but that isn't what this video is about is it. :-)

  • @mattg889 - A tally for this project alone using off-the-shelf toys, just like Collin:

Arduino UNO: (We'll need two.) $58 on Amazon

Arduino USB Host Shield: $40 on Circuits@Home

Arduino midi vox shield: $26 on Makershed

Akai Pro LPK25 Laptop Performance Keyboard: $48 (Currently on sale, down from $129 on Amazon)

    ------> Total: $172. <------

We haven't even included the hobbyist level soldering station like Collins, vent, solder and various preferred tools... Can you see my point now?

  • @gr33nman Well now right there is your problem, you can't think like Collin. As nerdy as he is, he is most likely filthy rich. (no offense Collin) I be jealous.

I would find all it used on ebay for half the price.

And you don't need the hobbyist level stuff, I have been using this cheap 30 watt soldering iron for many years now. You don't need a vent, I have never used one, sit by a window if your that worried. And all the other tools, tweezers, pliers, etc, cheap.

    See my point yet?

  • @mattg889 -- Matt - whatever. I've logically shown you this hobby is for trust-fund kiddies, children with wealthy parents, DINKs, or those willing to go without food, medication, and/or health insurance. I'm doing it bare bones, as you suggest. I have one arduino. I can script all I want. I just don't have the funds for parts to make the cool stuff. And this is a cottage industry all about modular cool stuff. So, no. My point is more valid than yours unless you just want to make a blinky light.

  • @gr33nman Um... No you have not made any logical point, you showed me how much this would cost at retail. That is all you have done. I and almost every other hobbyist in the world knows how to shop around for better prices. If you can't wrap your finger around that then that would be your problem.

Maybe I can be a dink at times, but I have no trust fund, wealthy parents. we do have house, utility payments, health ins., and food. But even we could afford this. Helps to be a very hard worker.

  • @gr33nman And granted while this particular project in this video would still be $122 by my calc's. Remember this is a big project, and there are hundreds if not thousands of non-modular and/or cheaper things you could do. Why dwell on one project you can't afford.....

  • @mattg889 Dude, you're being a comment troll. First, you falsely accused me of putting words in someone's mouth, then you told me I don't know how to shop and now back-handedly imply that I'm a lazy person - in other words, not a 'hard worker' like you. You've lost your honor to win an argument. I'm done with you.

  • @gr33nman oops, sorry I didn't mean to say your not a hard worker, I guess I should have worded it differently. But that accusation was a honest mistake that I admitted to. You just know I'm right and now you call me a troll because of it. "troll" is getting tossed around so much lately. sigh...

  • @gr33nman Everything else, circuit boards, usb plugs, ics, can be from 5 to 25 euros. Of course if you want to buy everything already made, you will pay for that. But in that case it's better to buy a new cell phone.

Most people doing these kind of projects are highly motivated and curious individuals, whose drive to learn just makes them pursuit complex hobbies. People with cash buy a boat, or a convertible.

  • @TechBoywii I bought an arduino when I was 11.

  • @TechBoywii I can't affort 20$ because I'm poor D:

  • @TechBoywii hey, I could afford one when I was 10

  • @TechBoywii exuse me but im 11 years old but do you know

monthly i can buy two arduinos and keep 10$ i get 50$ monthly from my parants

so dont say 11 years old comenly please

  • @2000anas2000 Look, rich fucker, instead of acting like you're king shit online because your parents spoil you, maybe you should pay more attention in school. Learn to spell, maybe? Your $600/year will only last as long as your parents do, or until your 18. Whatever comes first.

  • @vline09 but my parents aren't spoiling me and im the 2nd on my class

we are NOT RICH but because im do well my parents are rewarding me

and for you information i can say that if in any way im spoiled and i know im NOT you are worse at least im dont use any of your words im not acting as a king but saying that if anyone is 11 like me he have not to be refered to as a poor small kid or a small to get money or anything because every one can get money not only big persons and small are poor!!

  • @TechBoywii im 11 and i have one

  • @TechBoywii man! you got pwned by an 11yr old!!!

  • @imawsome511 I assume you can build a better synthesizer connected to a USB MIDI keyboard without including a computer?

  • which ardunio is he using?

  • @Coolnventions he is using uno

  • connect the arduino to itself :D

  • so you need 2 arduinos, a midi keyboard and 2 'duino shields! waste of my dosh!

  • totally lame video

  • @kushalmahidhar totally lame person.

  • i mis the old make channel you kipkay an dall thoes guys it was fun and you actualy had fun watching this is dum all nerds lol

  • How come I'm subscribed to @MakeMagazine & didn't notice this kind of videos b4?!

  • great¡ but how do you do the reverse thing?

  • Cool! this i will try myself! :)

the usb shieid att circuits @ home comes in two versions.. witch wone will work with this prodject or would both work fine?

  • Interesting!

  • Use a PicAxe in a project of yours... PLEASE!

  • kewl!!!

  • that's it! I'm getting an arduino!

  • @Slench101 I made the same decision about 5 months ago and my life has never been the same

  • @TheWaddleWaddle in a positive or negative way?

  • @Slench101 POSITIVE, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!!

  • Wicked collin! nice work dude

  • More lessons from Collin!

  • boooring!!

  • @TheVanyves28 blow me

  • Ick macs are disgusting but you have some good skills.

  • Can I convert S-Video or HDMI to use USB?

Didn't think so, guess I got to go buy a cord.

Have friends who are in bands that may be interest in seeing this?

    Thanks*

  • I am starting to want a Mac...

  • @Storm13Cloud You don't really need a mac for an arduino, there is a Windows and Linux version of the IDE.

  • @TechBoywii I know... I am just saying that it would be nice, it makes things that the PC doesn't have simple

  • I was so hoping he was going to pull out a USB mouse ¬¬

    That would have been awesome...

  • Is this guy relates to Dwight schrute???

  • Love the video. Next step for Collin = Bluetooth it!

  • Next step... Bluetooth synth keyboard hybrid!

  • Could you reverse this process and have a normal-midi to usb adaptor?

  • anyone else think he kinda looks like elton john?

  • @glitchmaster8000 To me he looks more like the Smith guy from the "Matrix."

  • inshort,? what is this thing for?? main purpose?

  • I tried building a library for USB interfacing. Quite manual, and almost completed it too. I personally don't think that shield is worth the money.

  • pause at 0:29 LOL at his face

  • dude guitar? GENIUS!

  • dude do more of this stuff...........

  • i just got bored one day and decided to hook up a small case fan to one off my RC cars to cool the battery, it works, but kills the battery fast :/

  • The guy scares me

  • please help me with setting up a !Wacom Pen&Touch Tablet" as a midi controller acting like a drumpad:posted a threat in the forum of makezine: forums.makezine.com

  • They don't call it Universal serial bus for nothing

  • @legokidnaruto that's exactly what I was thinking.

  • i subscribed to this person bc i htought it was another one of KIPKAYS channals and i thouight i watched this type videos... some computer tech person talking some computer talk and dont know what there saying after 14sec into the video.

I just wish everyone would make things simple like KIPKAY!

  • @HONDASBEST You're a fucking moron and will never attain higher knowledge and everyone smarter than you laughs behind your back.

  • @Nadrealis nerds are too scared to talk about me behind my back!

  • @HONDASBEST No, you have the mentality of a 5th grader and think people who actually laugh at you for being at the bottom of the gene pool are "nerds." I'm glad you're probably working at some gas station instead of somewhere where you'd actually be needed.

  • @Nadrealis u actually need to take a 2-day safety class to work at a gas station and you need to have not failed a single grade in school so i guess ur saying im pretty smart.

  • @HONDASBEST Lol, no, no you don't. You don't need to take any classes to work at a gas station.

  • @Nadrealis thats in your state

  • @HONDASBEST To work at a gass station, you need to travel around the world several times, find out what the secret of the universe is, count to infinity twice, build a rocket capable of carrying over 20 people to pluto, and you need to get OVER 100% in every single class in school, meaning that if there is no bonus in the class that can make you get over 100, you cannot work at a gass station. He is obviously stating that you are extremely smart.

  • @freetrader0000 aint i always :D

  • Oh, nice slide on the guitar -.-

There are no buttons on the middle of the neck!

    Like your eyebrows :P

  • @Tropetre actually with the new rockband/guitar hero guitars there are the buttons right near where you strum for when u do a long session of hammer ons and pull offs the buttons are smaller so they can b pressed with more ease than the bigger buttons at the top.

  • Oh yeah! Now i can use my novation launchpad with my MIDI gear without a computer!

  • So, how´s your girlfriend?

  • suuuhWEEEEEEET

  • Why a mac? :(

  • YEAH IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY DON'T SAY IT

  • ok if you dont know what hes talking about and you dont like it just leave , stop being so dumb and acting like your cool over the internet to gain self confidence. i think all of his videos are awesome. if you dont like it just dont make ignorant comments. and thank you for making your videos, i think they are really cool and very helpful

  • ok if you dont know what hes talking about and you dont like it just leave , stop being so dumb and acting like your cool over the internet to gain self confidence. i think all of his videos are awesome. if you dont like it just dont make ignorant comments.

  • this is awesome!

  • I swear if this guy's sentences were written out. he would have a comma after every word. But he still rules!

  • double arduino all the way what does this mean

  • I would love to see him get down to the gritty old Linear IC's.

  • Se você é Brasileiro de um joinha :)

  • Dude, collin needs to get off arduino.. It's almost all he ever uses..
