It has been shown by replication and study in brain connections that they are undeniable scientifically.
A learning theory is how all people learn, but pitfalls in learning being useful occur in autism more than any other population.
This fact makes relating with those having autism difficult because it is hard to ensure that they can relate with you as their behaviors to show relating can be limited.
Parents are an expert on their child. To be an expert medical doctor it requires an amount of study. To be an expert on autism it requires studying a population. To be an expert on teaching a child with autism it requires studying how learning takes place and ensuring generalization and maintenance.
To make a connection with someone it requires empathizing or relating in ways others can understand.

I think the mother implies by her words
one is willing for anything when there is misunderstanding & there is already pain possibly on both sides of the gulf.
Then almost anything is thinkable.
If you had a child who beat himself until he was blind in one eye you might consider anything that is possibly able to work.
