The one thing I don't understand is why they would they create such a fantastic, unique blade out of such a great material and then CHEAPEN IT WITH A LAME FAKE HAMON. Why do that? So what is it? A quality cutter with a crappy wall hanger appearance?? Because an etched hamon is just like that... like a cruddy wall hanger for show.
@bobbylee1557 no.. just no. thats a quality blade and its a "real" katana.. just thicker and more suited for cutting th hell out of wood like that. Nomal swords are made differently and are not designed to slice through a 6x1 with that mythical one swing
@AirsoftMaster18 Interesting tidbit. They tested samurai swords by stacking the bodies of fallen enemies on top of each other and slicing down through them. However many corpses the sword would cut through is the "body" rating.
Don't bother trying to explain things to an obviously retarded troll who has smoked to much weed and watched to many movies. These swords are excellent examples of functional katana that are HAND forged not production line stamped imitations, I have one myself.
@crazyroosterfist They dont know what that means, and they never will. After all, ignorance is bliss. The entertainment industry has made people think that katanas can somehow defy the laws of metallurgy and physics.
specialized goza cutter. it has a narrower geometry made for competitive cutting. he is showing that although it is a thinner blade, that it can with stand the shock of hitting something harder than the hardest tameshigiri target,i.e. green bamboo.
Well......... what can I say? That Katana can indeed do more than that. It's possible to slice even a thicker piece of wood, like it's ummm... butter?
Damage to the blade? are you serious? Wood isn't going to chip or snap the blade or otherwise visibly "Damage the blade." Your cutting at a poor angle with too much sideways flex is going to bend your blade to ribbons however.
you can tell that you have no skill with it sure your proving how strong it is but you need to hold it more and get the cut cleaner and stop thinking whacking with all your might will cut it and you might slice through it xD
To get sword skills you should use authentic swords, swinging bamboo sticks that weight 5 times less than a real blade is only good for the first level of study. This guy demonstrates the durability of the blade, not his awesome cutting skills, cut the "skill" crap.
This is wood your cutting not an arm.. Wood or flesh doesn't hurt or dent the sword.. Only metal hitting metal is where you'll see damage.. If you want to cut wood, use an axe.. Might be lucky using a broad sword for that 2x2 wood.. Reason Samurai swords are excellent killing machines cause out of all the swords it's lighter, and absorbs shock. Any sword could be the sharpest or longest. It's not a Lightsaber. But perfect balance compared to all the swords.. Try cutting a TV in halve..
He is touching the Katana to make it easier to show the blade on camera. Do you think someone doing a "Destructive Test" on a sword, as the video's title reads, really cares about a couple of fingerprints? Use your head.
cheness makes some of the best katana's out there. And there Spring Steel is i think the best u can get for non-traditional katana's. But if u want a truly traditional,, ud probably have to pay like 2-5k. These cost like 250-350ish.
i want a 5 foot long katana!! and two three-footers XD and...a claymore and.... a broadsword and a berserker sword and....well swords are my life now.. XD
For better results try not to strike like with European sword, I heard that katana swords need to be handled more like a knife (similar move when when you attack - European swords are more similar to axes in terms of striking technique).
You are correct, if he was trying to show how there were originaly used. but as the title says, he is testing its durability when swinging it like a crazyman on wood.
I did the same with a cheap ass 100u$d katana, and guess what, it bent! Steel 1095, so now im trying to see if i can put it right how it was, is not bented that bad (it bented up as in loosing the semicircular shape). So if someone knows a method for trying to put it right, appreciate it.
LOL, he's just test out how far it would cut before using it for the real things, your large cock.
LOL, you shouldn't be calling people low life moron. because their is someone here wasting this time on the internet calling other people low life moron and not even bothering to prove that he's a low life moron.
sorry for all of the comments Paul, but these people are really irritating.
to those who are commenting on the improper use of the sword, or his form...read the description or atleaste use your brain.
Paul does destructive tests on swords to pick out the best, low cost, sword. he is no master of the blade, but unlike most of you he admits it. most of you are most likely just children who think they know it all.
what paul does is a good thing, be glad he is doing it.
adding to that, there is a reason traditional is called that. it is the old way of doing things, just because it has history does not make it better. i would dare you to travel to japan and find the finest traditional sword, hold the blade sideways, and smack it against a tree or pole, i guarantee you the sword will take a set...do this with a well made monosteel sword and i bet it wont. to many people these days like to sit in a high horse...sadly most have no clue what they are talking about
Actually, there is more to a sword than it's resilience. If it's edge retention is not up to snuff, it will require more polishing, thus, more loss of metal. Modern made monosteel blades still take sets and break, and often times more frequently than a well made nihonto. I'm not saying that it is in the steel. It's all in the smiths skills. You could take 9260, L6, whatever and make a sword out of it...but if the heat treat is wrong, then it will bend or break.
While I firmly believe that modern steels are superior to traditional tamahagane in terms of purity, the reason traditional nihonto are generally much better than production blades lies in the skill of the smiths. Production companies put out the best quality they can afford in large numbers. A smith in Japan is bound by law to produce extremely high quality.
I'm not downtalking modern production swords. All I cut with are modern swords. I'm just saying that there is a lot more to this.
steels such as Damascus were created a very long time ago to create, essentially, a super high quality steel. back then the technology did not exist for the type of quality control as we have today, as well as controlling the nature of the steel and how it reacts to given circumstances. demascus was originally woven and folded so many times it essentially became a monosteel. the steel used for these swords surpasses the abilities of any traditional sword
This is a Japanese Sword, but please dont call it a Katana... a Katana would cut of that wood very easy. The difference between a real Katana and a regular japanese sword is:
The regular Japanese sword = made out of steel for example, forged like a normal steel sword and machines can make them easy.
The Real Katana = hand built by a master smith, has many layers that are forged and reforged again and again with special ingredients, with the best steel of this world... Damascus Steel etc.
for cutting the wood use a 5$ machete or an axe, use the sword only when you go out of your house a night to a weird rave party to kill vampires, only in that case ok!.
In reality nobody would cut clean through a wooden beam with any type of sword except maybe a claymore or zweihander. And all the people who claim they can, get a 4x8 wood, make a video, prove it.
lol, i dont even think a claymore would do it on one blow, you need an axe, swords don't carry the leverage needed. the only thing cutting wood with a sword is doing is abusing the blade, swords were made for cutting softer things like bamboo mats and people
So true, people always forget that as soon as a blade strikes something hard it is no longer a cutting or slashing damage but it turns into a blunt-impact damage, and swords just don't have the ability to do certain things when the slashing no onger occurs.
yeah, swords are made for slashing and thrusting, cheness is only demonstrating how resilient their swords are, the only problem with their swords is the fittings which could be replaced by the owner. people tend to think dismembering someone and cutting through a 4x4 is the same, let me tell you humans are much weaker than a plank of wood, thats why wara , goza, bamboo, Tatami & thin steel sheets are used to test cut, because its much closer to the resistance of a human or a lightly armored foe
thats good, but there are masters of katana that can cut thru that pieace of wood with one slash....=).....there is a is a veary complex tehnick for that sword...(sry for english)
I could prove that a sword could cut through a 4x4 wooden plank in a single slash. If you are willing to supply every thing in the process of the experiment. And prove you wrong that one slice could be enough.
Nice reply, but i'm not that type of person. so let me tell you instead. You get a large machine to do all of the work, BAM on swing and it's over. You just been proven worng, one swing IS enough.
in order to make a sword have enough power to go through a 4x4 it would have a reverse effect. one it would damage the sword badly, and two the high speed and power behind the blade would cause it to snap the 4x4, not cut though it.
again...its not possible by and human means, and almost as hard with machines...just give up.
......... i haven't really though about that, but maybe it's show the strength of a 4x4. Is it possible of you where to laser trim the sword after a good work with the black smith
it really is of no help how sharp the sword is...what stops the blade is the resistance and friction on the blade, not the edge. also...when cutting wood its easiest to cut with the grain, not against it...cutting a 4x4 would be against the grain. the wood cells between the harder age rings act as a sponge and absorb the energy behind the blade...very quickly.
........................... whit if it was a Giant sword, would it still work? Also, i know that if you were to cut it horizontally with the thing, would be easier because that is where water goes up.
that is nothing impressive...a small piece of lead (one of the softest metals) and a thin hot layer of copper...its not that hard to do...
educate yourself before you try to reply or debate something...im not sure what side you are on...most likely the moronic side saying that a katana can cut through a 4x4...however...a bullet and a 4x4 are totally different materials and conditions...dumbass
you think a sword can stop a bullet while its like flying near the speed of sound?
remember, you, are this wide:
katana is this wide: | |
ppl with a gun can shoot you anywhere in that opening and i guarantee, you wont stop it. and if you do somehow stop a bullet with a sword, it'll be with the flat side and not with the cutting side. and if you stop it like that, the sword will break and ull still get shot.
how thick do you expect one of these swords to be? only way to stop a bullet with a sword is if u actually stopped it with the blade part of the sword. and NO ONE alive can do that.
and even if you DID manage to block a bullet with the blade, the trajectory of the bullet is always the same, you'll get hurt either way. so blocking with the side is your only chance. go shoot a bullet in the side of a sword and see what happens
i really dont think you understand how immensley strong steel is, im not saying not someone with a sword could block a bullet im just saying that if you aimed a gun at a steel sword the sword would not break.
i duno but most swords you get aren't the ones you see here on youtube.
my brother bought a sword (stupidest idea ever) and he tried to test it out and tried hitting the tree in our back yard n it broke pretty easily.
if you manage to get a professionally made one, then i guess you'd be right. i wanted to link you to a vid of a sword getting broken by a bullet but when i found it, the bullet was a bigass caliber fired from a tripod machine gun.
Ya there are several tests on youtube for that. Most light firearm bullets will actually split in half, proven fact. But a mounted machine gun will take down a katana. Yet even then it slices 6-7 bullets in half before breaking
ye i realize that it can cut a bullet, but you or anyone else alive cant cut one mid flight. and even if they did, somehow cut the bullet in half, they'd still get hit by it.
actually, they'd get hit by both halves of the bullet. if you hold the sword out at arms length, if you cut it and its aimed at your sternum, 1 half of the bullet would hit ur right lung and the other would hit ur heart. thats my example but its pretty much how it would end up in any situation
Keep in mind that a bullet is made of soft lead and copper which only gets softer when it's heated when fired while a sword's edge is hard, sharp steel.
bullets are lead and unless its a steel core penatrator round any sword would cut it in half, even if it was a penatrator round most swords proly would still cut it just cos how fast the bullet is traveling.
I swear, if this was one of those videos with a scary jump moment, I would not be leaving a friendly comment telling you that you have a nice swing, but could use a bit of work on your aim. It should be two or so feet past the wood, so your arc is moving the most rapidly at impact time.
i like to hand sharpen knives and know a lot about it, and the steels ive sharpened... so what? id rather be doing that and buying knives rather than hookers...or meth...
oh well griff14083 outburst of shit was bad enough but your respond seemed abit immature.. oh well can't say the sword is super impressive but it's strong.
Regardless of the body would be near impossible to cut through solid wood thicker then 2inches without being like the govenator in his 20s. the ripples in the rings in the wood act like armor, it gets tougher to cut through as you go.
nice! You should do some iai & tamashigiri training if you are going to sell these types of swords! You probably would have cut straight though with better technique, but thanks for demonstrating this test anyway!
a more swift an skillfull swing would have cut clean through that beam, i can tell by ur stance ur no than in tune with ur blade (swiftness) is the key not power.
Some metals will break on impact hitting wood, some will bend, some will dull, and some will just not cut. instead of shooting off your mouth about what any weapon can do, do some research.
this vary cool sword today i was cutting water jugs i dont know how i gut small minor scratches but noting big and i dont know why but for me this sword is kind off heavy to Swing around i dont but any way next thing i want to get is Tenchi Ko Katana No Bo-Hi and what do u think abut that whats better Tenchi or Kaze Ko
Hmm, I haven't had any swords scuff up on water jugs before (definitely not milk jugs, but P.E.T. bottles can be abrasive).
As to the two swords you are interested in, if you find the SGC heavy (and it is quite heavy, its a BIG blade with a lot of steel in there) go the Tenchi Ko with hi.
depends if it is carbon steel and the hardness of it. if you use a stainless steel blade be ready for it to break at the handle and go flying. but a good carbon steel katana you could go around haking on trees and probably not damage the blade.
Sigh: it is an edge retention and durability test, I'm not trying to cut it in half braniac... (obviously you don't have an attention span long enough to READ anything in full).
I also tried to check your videos for an example of what you are talking about "Aaron Sensei", but as usual with arm chair Samurai/Ninja like you, there was only a heap of time wasting crap listed in your favourites. ;-)

Definitely suitable for "Western" sized people.

for cutting the wood use a 5$ machete or an axe, use the sword only when you go out of your house a night to a weird rave party to kill vampires, only in that case ok!.
AZURA888 3 years ago 3
Katanas are meant for slashing not cutting! As oppose to other swords.
liljjjj 3 years ago
speed and grace not strength and power.
vikingninja72 3 years ago
I am sure that katana is sharp, its just the guy holding is is kinda fat looking.
Striarii 3 years ago
In reality nobody would cut clean through a wooden beam with any type of sword except maybe a claymore or zweihander. And all the people who claim they can, get a 4x8 wood, make a video, prove it.
777Chouji777 3 years ago 2
lol, i dont even think a claymore would do it on one blow, you need an axe, swords don't carry the leverage needed. the only thing cutting wood with a sword is doing is abusing the blade, swords were made for cutting softer things like bamboo mats and people
PerfectChaos1212 3 years ago
So true, people always forget that as soon as a blade strikes something hard it is no longer a cutting or slashing damage but it turns into a blunt-impact damage, and swords just don't have the ability to do certain things when the slashing no onger occurs.
777Chouji777 3 years ago
yeah, swords are made for slashing and thrusting, cheness is only demonstrating how resilient their swords are, the only problem with their swords is the fittings which could be replaced by the owner. people tend to think dismembering someone and cutting through a 4x4 is the same, let me tell you humans are much weaker than a plank of wood, thats why wara , goza, bamboo, Tatami & thin steel sheets are used to test cut, because its much closer to the resistance of a human or a lightly armored foe
PerfectChaos1212 3 years ago
also an older practice in japan and also i believe in medieval Europe was to test cut using corpses, and convicted criminals
PerfectChaos1212 3 years ago
that one wouldnt be all that sharp as it isnt handmade
Rhyc111 3 years ago
actually cheness cutlery swords are hand made.
Verator 3 years ago
Wood is a lot harder to cut through than bamboo. Only in action movies, games, and anime episodes do you see katanas cutting through wooden beams.
aspie101 3 years ago 2
to, have you ever tried to break REAL bamboo?
Zoddom 3 years ago
breaking is verry difrent, its flexy that does not say it is hart to cut.
ordernary green trees that are not dead ar also hard to breake but not so hard to cut;/;)
gggt59vke4 3 years ago
thats good, but there are masters of katana that can cut thru that pieace of wood with one slash....=).....there is a is a veary complex tehnick for that sword...(sry for english)
VuKooDLaK 3 years ago
there is no sword, wielded by any master, that could cut through a 4x4 wooden plank with a single slash, sorry to say.
if there is, please post evidence of it, i have never seen this happen in my life and would live to enjoy watching it.
annihilationnegitive 2 years ago
I could prove that a sword could cut through a 4x4 wooden plank in a single slash. If you are willing to supply every thing in the process of the experiment. And prove you wrong that one slice could be enough.
lirg123 2 years ago
since your the one here with something to prove...then do it yourself...
annihilationnegitive 2 years ago
Nice reply, but i'm not that type of person. so let me tell you instead. You get a large machine to do all of the work, BAM on swing and it's over. You just been proven worng, one swing IS enough.
lirg123 2 years ago
nope, wouldnt happen...want to know why?
in order to make a sword have enough power to go through a 4x4 it would have a reverse effect. one it would damage the sword badly, and two the high speed and power behind the blade would cause it to snap the 4x4, not cut though it.
again...its not possible by and human means, and almost as hard with machines...just give up.
annihilationnegitive 2 years ago
......... i haven't really though about that, but maybe it's show the strength of a 4x4. Is it possible of you where to laser trim the sword after a good work with the black smith
lirg123 2 years ago
it really is of no help how sharp the sword is...what stops the blade is the resistance and friction on the blade, not the edge. also...when cutting wood its easiest to cut with the grain, not against it...cutting a 4x4 would be against the grain. the wood cells between the harder age rings act as a sponge and absorb the energy behind the blade...very quickly.
annihilationnegitive 2 years ago
........................... whit if it was a Giant sword, would it still work? Also, i know that if you were to cut it horizontally with the thing, would be easier because that is where water goes up.
lirg123 2 years ago
no sword would work, the wood would snap before it cut.
annihilationnegitive 2 years ago
Hey ajckass, a katana can even cut a 9mm bullet shoot.
Elpapi454 2 years ago
that is nothing impressive...a small piece of lead (one of the softest metals) and a thin hot layer of copper...its not that hard to do...
educate yourself before you try to reply or debate something...im not sure what side you are on...most likely the moronic side saying that a katana can cut through a 4x4...however...a bullet and a 4x4 are totally different materials and conditions...dumbass
annihilationnegitive 2 years ago 2
you think a sword can stop a bullet while its like flying near the speed of sound?
remember, you, are this wide:
katana is this wide: | |
ppl with a gun can shoot you anywhere in that opening and i guarantee, you wont stop it. and if you do somehow stop a bullet with a sword, it'll be with the flat side and not with the cutting side. and if you stop it like that, the sword will break and ull still get shot.
Smorklin 2 years ago
u think a bullet could go through stell........ok then
chrisalops 2 years ago
yeah i do think a bullet can go through steel.
how thick do you expect one of these swords to be? only way to stop a bullet with a sword is if u actually stopped it with the blade part of the sword. and NO ONE alive can do that.
and even if you DID manage to block a bullet with the blade, the trajectory of the bullet is always the same, you'll get hurt either way. so blocking with the side is your only chance. go shoot a bullet in the side of a sword and see what happens
Smorklin 2 years ago
i really dont think you understand how immensley strong steel is, im not saying not someone with a sword could block a bullet im just saying that if you aimed a gun at a steel sword the sword would not break.
chrisalops 2 years ago
i duno but most swords you get aren't the ones you see here on youtube.
my brother bought a sword (stupidest idea ever) and he tried to test it out and tried hitting the tree in our back yard n it broke pretty easily.
if you manage to get a professionally made one, then i guess you'd be right. i wanted to link you to a vid of a sword getting broken by a bullet but when i found it, the bullet was a bigass caliber fired from a tripod machine gun.
Smorklin 2 years ago
Ya there are several tests on youtube for that. Most light firearm bullets will actually split in half, proven fact. But a mounted machine gun will take down a katana. Yet even then it slices 6-7 bullets in half before breaking
varnlestoff 2 years ago
ure an idiot its a proven fact that a sword forged authentic japanese style can cut a 9mm bullet in half... learn some facts about metal
Quakewarz666 2 years ago 3
ye i realize that it can cut a bullet, but you or anyone else alive cant cut one mid flight. and even if they did, somehow cut the bullet in half, they'd still get hit by it.
actually, they'd get hit by both halves of the bullet. if you hold the sword out at arms length, if you cut it and its aimed at your sternum, 1 half of the bullet would hit ur right lung and the other would hit ur heart. thats my example but its pretty much how it would end up in any situation
Smorklin 2 years ago
Keep in mind that a bullet is made of soft lead and copper which only gets softer when it's heated when fired while a sword's edge is hard, sharp steel.
aspie101 2 years ago 4
So can pretty much any other sword.
blizarrd 2 years ago
bullets are lead and unless its a steel core penatrator round any sword would cut it in half, even if it was a penatrator round most swords proly would still cut it just cos how fast the bullet is traveling.
308gunman 2 years ago 2
Do you have any idea what you are talking about?
A sword is shard, a bullet is light and fast moving.
Shooting a bullet against a blade is like swinging a blade
as fast as a bullet against the said bullet.
blizarrd 2 years ago
well its very pretty, but its really effective huh?

marcos57431 3 years ago 2
I swear, if this was one of those videos with a scary jump moment, I would not be leaving a friendly comment telling you that you have a nice swing, but could use a bit of work on your aim. It should be two or so feet past the wood, so your arc is moving the most rapidly at impact time.
Javascap 3 years ago
To the creator this video: You should learn kendo, laido, or any other martial art (If you don't know any).
It'll make the cut more effective.
Tip: Don't stop slicing on or in the wood, finish about 1-5 feet past it. That way, there's more power.
Learned it from Taekwondo and it applies to everything else (physics).

ohh cmon i cant watch any longer without sayin a word
your swingin it like a baseball bat
and you need to train your body more
then you will cut through it like butter
Deathowl1990 3 years ago
Regardless of the body would be near impossible to cut through solid wood thicker then 2inches without being like the govenator in his 20s. the ripples in the rings in the wood act like armor, it gets tougher to cut through as you go.
ice585 3 years ago 2
isnt it the friction of the wood pressing against the blade that stop it?
ColdSteelcollecter 3 years ago
nice video! xD S
Key00Kard 3 years ago
nice! You should do some iai & tamashigiri training if you are going to sell these types of swords! You probably would have cut straight though with better technique, but thanks for demonstrating this test anyway!
wheyez 3 years ago
now chieness needs to make a "specialized wood cutter" katana lol.
plaguedrummer2 3 years ago
a more swift an skillfull swing would have cut clean through that beam, i can tell by ur stance ur no than in tune with ur blade (swiftness) is the key not power.
timothy72688 3 years ago
well, question is : Is there ANY weapon that would be damaged by cuting into wood? It only depends on metal from which its mde, doesnt it..
frantajaksvina 3 years ago
Some metals will break on impact hitting wood, some will bend, some will dull, and some will just not cut. instead of shooting off your mouth about what any weapon can do, do some research.
Southern661 3 years ago
well, depends on metal- iron/steel... and wood- oak spruce...nevermind
frantajaksvina 3 years ago
katanas are not for shit like that why you even buy katana in first place

Yeah, there were a few minor ones. But certainly nothing huge or obvious.
SwordBuyersGuide 3 years ago
this vary cool sword today i was cutting water jugs i dont know how i gut small minor scratches but noting big and i dont know why but for me this sword is kind off heavy to Swing around i dont but any way next thing i want to get is Tenchi Ko Katana No Bo-Hi and what do u think abut that whats better Tenchi or Kaze Ko
seven47katana 3 years ago
Hmm, I haven't had any swords scuff up on water jugs before (definitely not milk jugs, but P.E.T. bottles can be abrasive).
As to the two swords you are interested in, if you find the SGC heavy (and it is quite heavy, its a BIG blade with a lot of steel in there) go the Tenchi Ko with hi.
SwordBuyersGuide 3 years ago
Bo-Hi mack's ur sword weaker or that is not true ??
seven47katana 3 years ago
Slightly, yes. But not as much as you might think due to the 'I-beam' construction.
SwordBuyersGuide 3 years ago
Can you hit tree branches with a Katana without damaging the blade?
ObamaisaMuslim007 3 years ago
depends if it is carbon steel and the hardness of it. if you use a stainless steel blade be ready for it to break at the handle and go flying. but a good carbon steel katana you could go around haking on trees and probably not damage the blade.
willymcdowell 3 years ago
i do it all the time. u just have to have a good katana mines 1045 handforged carbon steel though so i dunno

Sigh: it is an edge retention and durability test, I'm not trying to cut it in half braniac... (obviously you don't have an attention span long enough to READ anything in full).
I also tried to check your videos for an example of what you are talking about "Aaron Sensei", but as usual with arm chair Samurai/Ninja like you, there was only a heap of time wasting crap listed in your favourites. ;-)
What a joke...
