An audacious cover of Holly's most delicate song. It's very easy to break, as is happening where trumpet & mandolin join in, and because it's a digital recording inferior to Holly's own miked recording on Ampex RTR. Yet, where there's acoustic guitar & vocals only the music is intact. Playing slow and with two instead of one didn't break it. The vocal crescendo didn't break it either. So you guys please keep going and drive carefully rather than fly to your gigs.
@4711rock Obviously you have more than a minor grasp of the song, and I can feel your love for it. But....while I agree with you on the trumpet, I think the mando is a perfect fill. The vocal and arrangement are terrific. Great analysis, though.
Thank you very much for your lovely comment. It really does mean a lot to us to know that our recording of 'Learning The Game' is being appreciated and enjoyed. Thank you again.
Thank you for this - it's easily the best version outside of Buddy's original demo. Can't abide the overdubbed versions. I look forward to a version of 'What To Do'.
Great song. Sweet version. a lot of imagination on the mandolin and the trumpet. Buddy old bass player (That'll Be the Day and Lookin' For Someone to Love), Larry Wellborne and I wrote a second verse. I may video it and put it on youtube. I tell you if I do. Rave on. John
Thank you for your positive feedback, we really do appreciate it. We are very aware of Larry Welborn and it is a thrill to hear from you. We would love to hear your second verse. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch & listen and post your comment.
Thank you very much. Sam appreciates the compliment regarding his singing, and Paul regarding his mandolin solo. We are so pleased that our version of Learning The Game is being enjoyed around the world. Thank you again for watching/listening and for taking the time to leave feedback.
You are certainly very welcome, and thank you for your very positive comment which we apppreciate very much. It really does mean a lot to us. Thanks again.
Excellent cover of a Buddy Holly song that he recorded as a demo shortly before his untimely death. A lovely arrangement, very much their own interpretation, as covers should be, and I LOVE it! Mandolins, trumpets and one hell of a strong vocal! A very respectful tribute in time for the 50th Anniversary of Buddy's death. I'm fortunate enough to have seen Detours in concert several times. They are an independent acoustic act who write their own, very strong material and are great lads!
Theres a heck of an acapella version by Black Tie with Billy Swan on vocals
