For Valentine’s day I gave my love a Daedra heart, black grand soul gem and some ebony ingots. She totally didn't get the reference either so I'm dumping her ass.
I rewatched the film last night and while there are many likeable elements to it (especially the cast) it does still feel a bit flat. I realise there were production problems, re-shoots by Chrichton after McTiernan was replaced, re-editing, re-scoring, etc. It just lacks the depth of characterisation in 'The Magnificent 7' or 'Zulu'. I wanted to like the film more and it has strengths, but ultimately it feels a bit underdeveloped. Still worth seeing, don't get me wrong.

You must be addressing someone else since I am a life-long republican who has no love for the dems or their leaders.
The 13'th warrior is a great deal of fun to watch. Getting upset over it makes no sense though. It was set in a time far away from us. No one alive to day is represented by peoples in the story. Even the Danes, who originated the Beowulf story, are quite different now than then.
The people they fight are an association with Western & Southern Europeans from 20,000 years ago. The original book has them as Neanderthals (Netherlanders, that's where they come from) but the screen version of the story associates characteristics of ancient Europeans & with more modern Celtic people. Vikings are not Celts, in this film the Celtic-Romano people are cannibals and the Norse and Arabs are civilized.
@javonoUTube I did not read the book but I assumed, given evidence of Viking settlements in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia that the savages they were fighting were a mix of pre-Columbian (like the Ohio Mound Builders) and Native North Americans.
The film portrays the savages as Celts and other Indo-Europeans from prehistory. The horns of power are a Celtic characteristic and the little statues are associated with Aurignacian culture which is Asiatic-European. Most Europeans, Americans and British people are the savages, this film is an insult.
@javonoUTube insult to whom? To me there are some paradoxes here, if these are Asiatic-Europeans then they would be the people who were in what is now Russia and Ukraine - more so Ukraine (my anscestry) and then there are the Vikings. The original founders of Kiev and the Rurikovian dynasty from which the Kievan Rus originated were Vikings mixed with Asiatic nomads (Scythian and Sarmatian peoples) so effectively they were fighting their own (?)
@NYcgrguy Celts founded the Byzantine culture after they invaded Macedon around 300BC, then Celtic Romano people founded the Eastern Empire in Byzantium and then they moved north and created the powerful Christian princedoms of Russia. Vikings did not arrive on the scene until 700 Ad, nearly a 1000 years after. Cyrillic based upon Greek not Viking. Slavs are not Vikings, most Slavs are Haplogroup R1A whereas Vikings where Haplogroup "I".
cont- @NYcgrguy what you're basically saying is similar to saying that all people from Honh Kong are British or a large proportion of people from India are British because the British founded colonies there, lol
The name Neanderthal has nothing to do with netherlanders.
The first Neanderthal skeletons were found in the Neander valley in Germany, or something like that. Wikipedia is an excellent resource for most subjects like this.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Its a joke you feckin barbarian, ha ha. All Scandinavians are feral, they're like camp followers feeding off the cultural scraps that our great European people have discarded and left behind.
I liked that the vikings used different types of armour/weapons and different fighting styles suggesting the extent of their travels. Also Boulfiwyf's death scene:seated on his throne his hound by his side and his vanquished enemy at his feet. WOW
basically its their taste in armor that works best for them and the way they fight, each viking was different, u'd never find a bunch of viking in the exact same gear unless thats all they had and even then there'd be minor differences, as to styles yes the longer they survived the more they learned through battle and training with each other.
Many thanks for your help. I'm researching the town name of Harrogate. Even though some say the town wasn't founded until the post-medieval era I suspected there might be a Norse link through the use of "gate" in it's name.
didn't expect a michael crichton story like this. but he did write spy novels before. im sorry if this upsets you but the only reason he wrote it is because he accepted a bet that he could write an epic better than beowulf
look at 2.22 how bonvaai knocks the leader of their pack to the depths of hades , and whos the mother fucker wannabee that stole my copy of this movie ..
NORDIC people are persian are aryan are sythian, saka , medes, are jatt people from the punjab, they also are the celts and the mohicans , ....study this well
they are undoubtably the strongest of man the most noble and most layed back and this scene depicts perfectly how only few defeat great numbers of small neandethral brain indigiiuos tribes... as the cro magnon man is the direct parents of these beutiful yet "ugly" people
you fuckn idiot, a warrior have nothing to do with a deathmetal concert, the only think you are is a fuck drug mother fucker. go to smoke some marihuana with your stupid group.
LO THERE DO I HEAR GIRLY MEN TALKING ABOUT WARFARE!
The Vikings, Norsemen, etc. were so culturally distant from us in more respects than simply warfare. Its not far stretch to consider their lack of PTSD or "emotional fatigue" in battle. Their heaven was a constant battle for pete's sake!
@frankieboas86 dude, viking were the greatest warriors in my opinion, and defiantly the bravest, strongest and least cowardly. this prayer the halls of valhalla, is amazing.

@javonoUTube I did not read the book but I assumed, given evidence of Viking settlements in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia that the savages they were fighting were a mix of pre-Columbian (like the Ohio Mound Builders) and Native North Americans.
NYcgrguy 2 years ago
The film portrays the savages as Celts and other Indo-Europeans from prehistory. The horns of power are a Celtic characteristic and the little statues are associated with Aurignacian culture which is Asiatic-European. Most Europeans, Americans and British people are the savages, this film is an insult.
javonoUTube 2 years ago
@javonoUTube insult to whom? To me there are some paradoxes here, if these are Asiatic-Europeans then they would be the people who were in what is now Russia and Ukraine - more so Ukraine (my anscestry) and then there are the Vikings. The original founders of Kiev and the Rurikovian dynasty from which the Kievan Rus originated were Vikings mixed with Asiatic nomads (Scythian and Sarmatian peoples) so effectively they were fighting their own (?)
NYcgrguy 2 years ago
@NYcgrguy Celts founded the Byzantine culture after they invaded Macedon around 300BC, then Celtic Romano people founded the Eastern Empire in Byzantium and then they moved north and created the powerful Christian princedoms of Russia. Vikings did not arrive on the scene until 700 Ad, nearly a 1000 years after. Cyrillic based upon Greek not Viking. Slavs are not Vikings, most Slavs are Haplogroup R1A whereas Vikings where Haplogroup "I".
javonoUTube 2 years ago
cont- @NYcgrguy what you're basically saying is similar to saying that all people from Honh Kong are British or a large proportion of people from India are British because the British founded colonies there, lol

WOW... i didn't know that XD

The name Neanderthal has nothing to do with netherlanders.
The first Neanderthal skeletons were found in the Neander valley in Germany, or something like that. Wikipedia is an excellent resource for most subjects like this.

Its a joke you feckin barbarian, ha ha. All Scandinavians are feral, they're like camp followers feeding off the cultural scraps that our great European people have discarded and left behind.

ArjanSnuk 2 years ago
lo 1. (archaic) Look, see, behold (in an imperative sense). 2. (colloquial) A shortened form of "hello" ('lo; see hallo)

Bouliwyf is BADASS! Going into a horribly mismatched battle even when wounded!! Idk bout the rest of you guys but this is one badassmothafucker! haha
johnnychristrulez777 2 years ago 15
I liked that the vikings used different types of armour/weapons and different fighting styles suggesting the extent of their travels. Also Boulfiwyf's death scene:seated on his throne his hound by his side and his vanquished enemy at his feet. WOW
denisgerard 2 years ago 5
basically its their taste in armor that works best for them and the way they fight, each viking was different, u'd never find a bunch of viking in the exact same gear unless thats all they had and even then there'd be minor differences, as to styles yes the longer they survived the more they learned through battle and training with each other.
Feiora 2 years ago
On the Elite Armies of Olaf Trgyvasson and Harold Hardrada had the standard gear.
Also if they came from the same smith.

You are a coward if you think a Valhallian prayer is required before something as insignificant as that.

Trying to research a possible Norse word: haro or harro into English. Any ideas?
Wingdoss 2 years ago
Could be related to modern English Harrow ,a temple or shrine. Saxon is Hearg from which we get hearth also
beowulfsword08 2 years ago
Many thanks for your help. I'm researching the town name of Harrogate. Even though some say the town wasn't founded until the post-medieval era I suspected there might be a Norse link through the use of "gate" in it's name.

I really loved watching this movie. This is one of my ultimate favorites alongside of Brave Heart, 300, and Troy.
sed8tive 2 years ago 4
Two things I like about the ending.
1. The prayer and how Buvi walking out inspires everyone else.
2. When Bulvi sits at the end of the battle, it shows that he is a king. Which is what he wanted to become for most of the movie.
taotzu5405 3 years ago 3
It is one of the best exits I can think of offhand, brilliant. :)

Bulvi is actually Beowulf

didn't expect a michael crichton story like this. but he did write spy novels before. im sorry if this upsets you but the only reason he wrote it is because he accepted a bet that he could write an epic better than beowulf
