  • What is the big deal? If there was anyone else on drums this would not be Pelican. If you would like to listen to a band that isn't Pelican, scroll up for the search bar please.

Side note, guitarist goes all out. Very cool.

  • something is wrong with this picture. some of you take the time to critique the drummer, yet he seems to be the reason why you are watching/listening to this video. are you searching for flaws in an artist that has mastered his profession with such simplicity? you need to keep searching, because i feel that you're looking in the wrong place. take lars, for instance...i can't rate him, because his mouth cancels out anything he does on the drums. but i've heard of him.

  • i personally could not picture this band with a different drummer.

  • Ok just heard about this band and as it is I'm not into instrumental bands....but I can at least recognize good music. But this.....WTF is this....i was waiting for the "oh shit" moment......they sound like some one ran in to a Thai Orphanage and mowed the place down with shit oozing guns. one word......Asstastic

  • My second favorite band. I just got the hoodie with their latest album artwork on it. It's quite something. Better purchase one only 2x large and small left. Anyway, i desperately would like them to be my number one but i can never seem to shake off porcupine tree. They're my fav post band. Although my top ten is 90% post rock lol.

  • Not a fan they got me beat talent wise but i just cant get into these guys

  • Am I a complete philistine for not hating the drummer?

    I think he's perfectly ok.

  • KICKING ASSES!

  • the drummer's really improved on their most recent album, but...I in a way, I wish he hadn't ...I know plenty don't agree but I really enjoy the "rawness" of his playing...

  • @MrGuntherthecat I hate how the drums are mixed on the new one.

  • @ObeseChess Tell me about it, mate. He's much more technically proficient on the most recent album, but the production polish has smoothed the edge off far too much...

  • THIS SHIT IS TIGHT THATS WHAT KIND OF MUSIC I LOVE PLAYING WHEN I MESS AROUND ON MY GUITAR. so sick

  • i couldn't imagine playing this kind of music in broad daylight. that would be so weird to me.

  • How is it people think they can judge how good a musician these guys are from a youtube clip??? They are playin ONE song, probably partyin and havin fun, not sittn down doin their best to impress you tossers. Sad.

  • If you like Pelican you should check out the band ATOMIS you can download their song Maelstrom for free at this link: atomis.bandcamp. com obviously no spaces.

  • they are better musicians than you think, it may not sound so technical to you but everything they do is with purpose, they are trying to exude a certain sound.

  • a keservit

  • Ye, the drummer is the problem...

  • @Fezetec Listen to Russian Circles, Its very similar to this kind of music and they SERIOUSLY have one of the best drummers in the world, soooo beautiful. Listen to Melee by Russian circles and you will know what i mean.

  • @85matt85 My first comment was filled with irony. I am actually listening to Russian Circles right now, and its alright. I can here some music in there, and they are miles ahead of this Pelican-shit.

  • @Fezetec This is absolutely awesome, for you to say the drummer is "the problem" goes to show you know absolutely nothing about any conceivable genre of music. The drummer is very skillfully controlling the pace of the song, if you've ever listened to this album even a noob like yourself would be able to tell the subtle changes/differences in pace, which are deliberate. The fact that he is doing this live with such a great deal of nuance and control makes your opinion completely invalid mate.

  • @sturtpot Never get the irony you big numnut... If you didnt understand, the whole band sucks, not just the drummer. Im sorry for you that you listen to this shit

And btw, ofc I can hear the drummer trying to pace his playing according to the pace of the song, but that doesnt mean that he doesnt suck at it...

  • @Fezetec I really did laugh out loud when you called me a numnut, it's an awesome word. I haven't heard that since I was back at school.

Unfortunately you fail again when you say that the whole band suck because there's nothing in this video that demonstrates that the're nothing but a tight unit both live and recorded.

I feel sorry for you that you will never ever appreciate their music as they give you a great musical experience, you're pathetic "irony" only reinforces the fact you are a noob

  • These guys are sick

  • the whole point is engagement. they are. are you? if not, go listen to your music and get another jar of vaseline.

  • 2:55 man the guitarist sure does get into it hahaha

  • Gibson sg's are amazing

  • little too obsessed with the guitarist, but other than that good shit. he DOES know how to rock out, ill give him that

  • definitely the best instrumental metal band. instrumental music is different than music with a front man or vocalist the entire time. It is to be interpreted with your eyes closed. as if in a drone zone dream.

  • Amazing song, this is one of the most creative instrumental bands I know. Thumbs up

  • check out a band called celestial machine on my space pelican is the gods of all post metal and callisto, and isis, and cult of luna

  • Yes, pelicans drummer does slow down and speed up. Yes, he's not the greatest drummer I've ever heard. But as far as I'm concerned thats fucking perfect. This band wouldn't have the same effect if they were really tight and on time to the millisecond. They're supposed to be a bit loose. A bit groovy. Get into it :]

  • THIS IS SOME GOOD SHIT HERE!

  • I love this song, Pelican, and all the music they create. But I fucking don't like their drummer. He can't keep time worth dick; he speeds up, slows down, and just generally doesn't do things a good drummer should. If they replace him, they'd be unstoppable.

  • Pelican is very fitting for their name. You have no imagination....Pelican will crush you with riffs!

  • to band members of Pelican: good stuff, but why the hell is your band name Pelican? doesn't seem to fit your style of music lol

  • @fishyellis I beg to differ. Pelicans mouths are massive and deep....Pelicans sound is...fucking..gaping and massive :P fits perfectly as far as i can tell.

  • well that's not what people (at least not me) think of when they/I think of pelicans. It just doesn't sound right and if u have to think about it...idk. haha it's a good thought tho ;P

  • @fishyellis Doesn't matter anyway. they're fantastic!! :D

  • @fishyellis Why not?

  • U guys own!!! : p

  • no i do not beileive u are hahahaha

  • Am I the only one that is getting this song in the left ear phone? My right one is not blown out, it works with any other video. Strange lol

  • @liftyourskyinnyfist: the same, i think it was recorded in mono.

ok, not exactly my kind of music...

  • @LiftYourSkinnyFist

    Me too...

  • change your quality to 480p. fixed the mono thing for me

  • @0howie0

Hmmm... yeah this new option made it better, but still its not 100% on both phones :-/

    But still better.

    Thx for info!

  • @ 0howie0

    sweet! :D

  • Great angle, terrific job getting so close.

  • this shit is badass!

  • guoo!!!

    great fucking music!!!

    look the fucking guitarist!!!

    awesome!!!

  • One of the greatest songs I've heard from these dudes.

  • What the fuck is with (i)argueing...they are just a band..people making music...the fact that you compete bands in your head makes me really mad. Thye are being creative..writing good music...flow...something to listen to....now what are you doing? Coming here to watch them then criticizing.....wow throw a hot towel over your shoulder and call it a good game broski, while you make your way out to give the team some butt slaps, remember that everyone noticed you missed all your shots.

  • I love cheese burritos

  • i also enjoy cheese based snacks.

  • lol cheese based

I also enjoy fire and earth based snacks as well

water based is too complicated imo

  • LOL @ whining on the noob tube

  • if you like instro rock/metal, check out 'the fucking champs'. great band.

  • pelican and isis are the best bands to see live dude..check out my isis vids from a couple weeks ago...i didnt have enough camera mem. to record pelican but they were amazing..for little guys they whoop ass on there gibsons

  • The problem I had with both of their lives shows last week was that it was TOO loud. The human ear can only take so much. Both bands are very musically complex and intricate, but you lose that detail when the volume is up so loud that you can really only make out the rhythm.

  • check out Dosius "Nuclear American Rain Dance" if you like instrumental music

  • obviously you do not have an appreciation for great music. go listen to your radio rock

  • Comment removed

  • I listen to community and student radio, its just I have to sift through shit like this to get to the good stuff. If it weren't for this crap, listening out for good ecclectic or experimental would be easier. You're just conforming to like minded others who will listen to ANY alternative to payola and consider it good. That's just not thinking for yourself. Guess what, there's bad top 40 music and there's bad indie. Just live in a bohemian city and you'll see.

  • if you cant handle hearing the occasional song you dont like maybe you shouldnt be listening to the radio idiot. and anyways why would you find the video if you didnt like them after hearing them on the radio. and to say that he is "conforming to like minded others" blah blah blah, wow, what kind of dipshit know-it-all says that. you do realize the same can be said about you and your taste for student RADIO, of all things, and the other shit you mentioned?

  • Chill dude, all I'm saying is you're a poser "faggot" with no taste in music who yaks with douchebag friends at cafes smoking cigarettes on the porch, is that so wrong?

  • ......whatever dude i give up, you can't argue

  • haha thats some funny shit bro!

  • yes your student/community radio is equal to pop radio, popular music. i do not let others decide what i listen to, no one ever told me about this band and im glad i found such great musicians. i like this and many other people like these jams. if you don,t the bite it you scum

  • It's not MY student radio dude, I didn't say I listen to it religiously. This Pelican shit plays on student and community radio, you just called your music pop. Come on, you're a fanatic like the rest admit it.

  • then dont listen to it. simple as that. im no fanatic, i just enjoy the good grooves

  • why yes i do play the guitar, and can play a bit of the drums. yes this band does have some easy music. but it doesnt have to be so intricate that you cant understand whats going on to be good music. its the WHOLE composition of the song that makes their songs so great. and to throw in some bands that i am into, it goes from a wide range. one minute ill listen to slayer then the next david bowie and then to some eazy e and back to some classic five stair steps. i listen to it all.

  • you're a fucking idiot, who cares if this band is "easy as shit", people don't care about how hard it is to play. it sounds good. you're one of those "my taste in music is the best" nerdy faggots that thinks they're so smart and their music is above the rest for whatever reason. music isnt a fucking competition. if it sounds good, its good music.

  • FUCK they are incredible live. Not many bands can compare to this live.

  • Yeah, but this recording is nothing like their live shows at all. I saw them in Dallas on Wed, May 20th, and it was awesome. their sound live is above studio quality.

    Just have to see 'em

  • you know who else likes pelican ...... God....

they inspired him to create mars i think... or maybe it was pluto...

since even he would tell us its a rock not a planet =]

  • ummm... the 'lead singer' of pelican? non-existent.

  • he meant the lead singer IS the audience hollering at the shows. lrn2read

  • thank you.

    christ. i'm a fool

  • sounds good

  • so brutal, the lead singer of this band is the audience yelling and growling at the shows, very healing, get the chills, and visual stuff for that ass bioch

  • I want to listen to this song more in-depth. Isn't there a studio version around?

  • uh, yeah man... it's on their first album: Australasia

  • Well I suppose you could start there, but their self-titled EP is (in my opinion) where you need to begin grasping Pelican's mastery. Without that first EP, Australasia might be too much for the average listener to appreciate. (Not trying to be elitist, but seriously Pelican *can* be an acquired taste.) Live, however, they will utterly ruin almost all other bands for you.

  • PELICAN FTW!!!

my favorite song and album from them

    AUSTRALASIA!!!!

  • redshaftedflicker please go put a dick in both of your ears and while licking a red shaft. You are Ignorant as fukk

  • wikipedia has them as SLUDGE METAL and i think its fitting. the songs are long and heavy!! pelican is cool.

  • you made me laugh because you can't be serious about pelican being poop. maybe this non mainstream metal rock isnt your taste and you like crap on the radio.

  • Putting words into my mouth because I don't really care for Pelican is why I'm laughing. Hi, my name is "crap on the radio," thank you very much. Hell, Rob Halford loves Pelican and I love Halford. It's just an opinion, that's all.

  • it's hard for something to be overrated when the critics don't even bother rating it. Educate yourself you ignorant twat. Pelican is probably better than the shit you listen to.

  • Ignorance is XxxX, xxx, XXXX, or anything with an X in front of or behind your "name."

  • lol, yeah what's with the influx of these XxxxXXXXxxxxX invalids.

  • post-metal, post-doom...wtf cares?

    great band after all!

  • They're Post Metal people, along with Isis, Neurosis, etc.

Song rules. The riffs at the end are out of this world.

  • Post-pop....yeah...

    Excellent band.

  • Post metal

  • Post Rock

  • its called POST-DOOM

  • its uncomfortable to listen to

  • stoner doom metal?

  • i'm pretty sure it's sludge metal.

  • Post metal. Stop creating bullshit genres and just all it what it is!

  • it's true. the drummer isn't that great. when you listen to the music though, none of them are doing anything super spectacular. however, they still know how to write really smooth flowing songs, and they still know how to get an emotion out with their music.

they aren't brilliant musicians, but they are brilliant artists.

  • @BrendanAlborough You're saying they write easy to play but rhythmically challenging music because they aren't brilliant musicians? In my opinion, before you become a composer, you are a musician. And for a band to write music with complex harmonies and rhythms that hardly any other metal bands utilize certainly takes a deal of experimentation with their given instrument.

  • I fucking love this band, all the great stuff about metal without the ugly vocals.

And yeah, the drummer doesn't _look_ too great, but as far as rythym goes he does a good job.

  • God, how irritating guitarist!!

  • stfu eurotrash.

  • This band is awesome live. I've seen them four times and they had my ears ringing every time. Also, the venue was very small AND I was in front by the amps!

  • they shouldn't be playing when it's still light out ^^

this is one of their best songs in my opinion.

  • just saw these guys last night, utterly stunning, IMO they've made singing obsolete ;)

  • i love pelicans drummer

he sneaks in cool rifts that you have to hear like several times to catch. Like he does a high hat splash thing then two snare hits thats pretty cool that i thought was really different

  • word, i dont understand the hate on their drummer at all. he keeps tempo, sets a nice groove, and does some cool shit from time to time. this music is too sludgy for faster aggressive drumming. one of the few exceptions might be torche.

  • For being self taught...Larry is great..

  • does anybody know where to get pelican guitar tabs. ive tried almost everywhere and i really want to play some of their songs.

  • Try their forums, I think some people managed to tab some songs...

  • On their website try the Board.

  • thanks alot man

  • no problem

  • I'm strange... I hate constant repetition in music (obvious in hip-hop/techno/pop songs.. UGH)... yet I have no problem listening to Pelican and other post-rock/metal acts... meh

  • ahahah same here

  • this would be good music to play guitar to

  • You'd be surprised how many flashy drummers can't get the basics right. This guy is very precise. He does his job, and he can be very skilled/fast/flashy as well. It's all about the feel, not how hard it is to play it!

  • i agree 100%. been trying to get a drummer for my band for ages now. we want someone similar to pelicans drummer. all i get is a bunch of tools who want to be the next chris pennie or some shit going off tempo all the time doing odd time signatures. chillll!

  • if you understand the music, then you can tell its all in the creation of the song, not how many notes you can hit or your long black hair. go listen to your blink182 nursery rimes..

  • i would kill to be the drummer in this band...its all about feel and being precise...fuck off to all the haters..

  • His drumming is basic, but I like it.

  • Actually, Herweg is one of the best drummers ever. His drumming is organic, versatile, polyrhythmic and completely anti-mainstream. Anyone not recognising that knows shit about drumming and music in general. I can prove that on an abacus.

  • im pretty sure mike portnoy or danny carey is better than this drummer. he doesnt sound that great.

  • nah they have diff styles its all about the music they play i think but i would say brann dailor is better than the drummers u named

  • completely "anti-mainstream". LOL - what a joke. doens't matter what fucking stream it's in - good drumming is good drumming. this guy is OK in THIS video. maybe he's better but, surely you can't expect people to believe from THIS VIDEO, that he's even in the LEAGUE of some of what u call "mainstream" drummers lol.

  • Uh particularly on this song the drumming is supposed to slow and simple. There are songs though that do showcase the drummers talent, which don't be mistakened he does have, But on this song its just a lot of cymbals and bass drum.

  • His drumming is actually completely inorganic. Several observers thought they were hearing a drum machine. He is a decent timekeeper, but he has zero sense of dynamics. He plays in his own world, with complete disregard for the direction the rest of the band is moving in. Comparing him to Dave from Russian Circles is pointless, as Dave is a showy virtuoso. Instead, listen to some Red Sparowes records and see how David Clifford (and formerly Dana Berkowitz) held the sound together with fluidity.

  • Their hearing isn't 20/20 anymore, I guess.

  • I spoke to the drummer from Pelican last night and I was talking to him about people saying he's a crap drummer. He says he knows he's not flashy; that's the whole point. Pelican isn't about the drums, it's all about the riffs. He doesn't want to detract from them. I personally think his playing suits the song, which is the most important thing.

  • I can't say I agree with that philosophy. They're lacking the more common vocalist; a good drummer with technical skill is a necessity. I think he's more than adequate in complimenting his companions, but is the man intentionally holding back?

  • It's stoner rock.

It's not suppose to be unique or technical.

    It's just suppose to kickasss!!!

  • do they evr sing

  • No. Pelican is awesome, but the drummer is one of the guitarist's brother, and if it wasn't for that I think they would have a better drummer and be a better band.

  • you are way off dude....

  • Nope, they're an instrumental band. Brilliant sounds. Particularly liking 'Spaceship Broken - Parts Needed' Check it out if you've not heard it before.

  • no, they're too good of musicians to have to work around lyrics.

  • Watching this video was the last nail in the coffin. Pelican, you're a great band, but you really need to find yourselves a new drummer before you can really live up to your potential.

  • if pelican gets a new drummer they wouldn't be pelican anymore...

  • This is what typical new death metal fans, or even "Musical snobbs" (as I like to call them )will hate experimental bands like Sunn O))), Portal, Axis Of Perdition ect. Because as it is with film, if something is different it's looked down upon. I compaire films like Eraserhead are looked down upon by film snobs.

Music is about having fun and expressing your vision through notes (fast or slow). Some people get it, some people don't.

  • the ppl that study music theories for years, will all ways know what will work. this is what m theories is all about! but this kind of ppl prefer to play more complicated music, and they mostly appreciated by other musician. and this is whats genre like prog and jazz are all about. and pelican is not experimental, in the post metal there are enough band to call it a genre. most of the pelican is prog not metal. so its expected for metal heads not to like it.

    ps

    russian circles much batter.

  • prog? lol

  • you need to explain your self in more details.

  • progessive rock

  • what about it?

  • it's more like sludge rock/metal, not really progressive :) and he just didn't agree with the tags ;)

  • do you know what a post metal/rock are?? my guess no.. post metal/rock are considered as prog sub.

  • no i don't actually, but post, in my opinion, still means 'after'. How can it be post rock then when this style already exists for 10 years?

  • To me "post" just mean some kind of new wave of rock.

  • post is latin for 'after'. And it's no new kind, although, not really,,

  • its to complicated to explain in a comment, there is a nice site named Progarchives read about math rock, post rock and post metal, read it in this order. post rock came out from math, the main difference is the drumming, and post metal is basically a post rock with heavy vocal and power chords.well its not exactly like this, there are more differences, but that's why i gave you the "link" :)good examples are ..

    post rock: Russian circles

    post metal: Isis

math rock: Minus the Bear(hate them)

  • i know all those bands, but i'm not really interested in knowing which styles they are, i just think it's good music.. Isis is more like sludge metal though, in my opinion :)

but yeah, you could be right :)

  • you lost the point, the point is that its prog. does the genre matters? ye because if you like pelican, then you probably will like Isis witch is in the same genre. i get bored really easily, and i all ways look for new bands.

    ps

there is a connection between sludge and post metal.

  • y, i do too, but mostly myspacing, it's easy.. And you're right, it doesn't matter, it's just great music :D

  • I love your username

  • @Ogorek What??

  • @HamsterRapingBastard Your opinion doesn't matter. "Post" can mean a lot of things.

  • Bands want to have their own identity and in order to do that you need to experiment or look further back into their favourite bands' influences. Bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Kiss, Pentagram, Iron Maiden, Misfits, The Accused, Ramones, Motorhead are all simple but they influenced metal and need to be studied in order to accomplish creating your own unique style.

  • Music should not be a compition. I feel a lot of newer Death Metal fans should realize that. They will say Cannibal Corpse is the best band but they hate Possessed because they are too simple. But I can gaurentee if you listen to a simple song from bands like Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, or even early rock or punk bands they will remember it all day instead of a typical Suffocation song that blasts the whole way through.

  • I look at it this way. Music is an expression and an art form. There are some musicians who can study music for years and yet never really know what makes certain music work. A lot of Death Metal fans (well newer Death metal fans) are very restricted into what they listen to. They feel if a band plays 300bpm and a million notes a song it's "Brootal" but as far as memorability or thought put into it....none what so ever.

  • best music to listen to while baked, i love the drummng its so perfect for this band might not be techbical or hard but its awsome

  • worst drummer ever

  • shut up /b/tard
