I work for a place with a great HMO/PPO plan and there are cases where terminal cancer patients or otherwise traumatic injury victims were taken care of without a hitch to the tune of millions in bills. I know, I work very closely with our Benefits people.

@ecofriendlyS - Who's L&I? State laws vary on worker's compensation, which is the issue here, not health insurance. She may be covered by FMLA or ADA as well, and needs to check on those rights. I don't know where she is or her specific circumstances so I can't say more, but it's not a health insurance issue.

@mattrR678 part 2: speaking of cholesterol lowering poisons, many cheap natural everyday vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements have cholesterol lowering effects (check out Niacin!), but since they've been out forever, all the FDA can do is marginalize supplements, and force manufacturers to print the canned disclaimer "These statements have not been .....FDA....not intended to treat or cure....yada yada.." on the bottle, even though, for example, Vit-C cures scurvy, does it not?
@BRYAN351 Scurvy is a deficiency of Vitamin C so yes taking Vit C "cures" it, much like water "cure" dehydration. There are FDA drugs that contain Niacin, but those are very high dose, not like the supplements you can buy at Wal-Mart. The FDA makes manufacturer print those warning label, so that companies cannot claim to treat illness when the supplement has not been proven to work effectively. If companies complete the testing and are shown to be effective the FDA can approve them, ex Alli.

Humans don't get high cholesterol because they lack Lipitor. They get it because their diet lacks healthy foods and nutrients, and/or they eat too much unhealthy food. Drugs don't solve the problem, and they often cause additional problems.

People get high cholesterol because of Enterohepatic circulation, genetics, high cholesterol diet and lack of HDL or exercise.

I remember hearing about a prescription drug for vision improvement that mainly contained Bilberry and Lutein, both of which are effective and cheap natural supplements (that pharma companies can't patent and profit from, unless they funk it up somehow). It's all about the money.
@BRYAN351 When you buy a FDA-approved drug, you are guaranteed that you getting what you paid for and that it’s effective. When you buy some supplement, you don't know what is in there, it may not even contain what is says it does. You don't have the training or medical background, disease is that magic thing to you. You don't understand the complexes of the body or why it is so hard to "cure" cancer, because you don't have any concept of it. There are not present cure for cancer, not yet.
@mattrR678 If supplement makers cheat on dosages or purity, word eventually gets out. People can often tell if something is under par, and there are private companies that test supplements, such as Consumer Reports. It's a huge business.

And in the trials that Burzynski has been involved in, patients have died that why he doesn't carry them anymore. In the US every drug has to undergo years of testing before it is released.
@mattrR678 Actually, I do know when I'm not taking as much of certain things that I normally take, like when I run out and haven't bought more yet. Some things I can't tell, but others I definitely can, like B-vitamins and Panax Ginseng. I've been taking 10 - 15 supplements daily since I was 27. I'm 43 now, never take "meds" of any kind, not even aspirin, look 33, feel 23, and rarely ever get sick (knock wood). I never get bruises (thanks to Vit-C and Grapeseed). The list goes on.

@mattrR678 The FDA has killed far more people than it's saved. Sorry. While a drug company is forced to jump through hoops for years to get a drug approved, thousands die that could have been saved, if the drug were on the market.
But what will protect us from harmful drugs? The marketplace. Dead customers are bad for business, so drug makers have strong incentive to put out safe drugs. If one slips by, as will inevitably happen, with or without the FDA, then word gets out.

I work for a place with a great HMO/PPO plan and there are cases where terminal cancer patients or otherwise traumatic injury victims were taken care of without a hitch to the tune of millions in bills. I know, I work very closely with our Benefits people.

@ecofriendlyS - Who's L&I? State laws vary on worker's compensation, which is the issue here, not health insurance. She may be covered by FMLA or ADA as well, and needs to check on those rights. I don't know where she is or her specific circumstances so I can't say more, but it's not a health insurance issue.

There are FDA drugs that contain Niacin, but those are very high dose, not like the supplements you can buy at Wal-Mart. The FDA makes manufacturer print those warning label, so that companies cannot claim to treat illness when the supplement has not been proven to work effectively. If companies complete the testing and are shown to be effective the FDA can approve them, ex Alli.

Humans don't get high cholesterol because they lack Lipitor. They get it because their diet lacks healthy foods and nutrients, and/or they eat too much unhealthy food. Drugs don't solve the problem, and they often cause additional problems.

Some things I can't tell, but others I definitely can, like B-vitamins and Panax Ginseng. I've been taking 10 - 15 supplements daily since I was 27. I'm 43 now, never take "meds" of any kind, not even aspirin, look 33, feel 23, and rarely ever get sick (knock wood). I never get bruises (thanks to Vit-C and Grapeseed). The list goes on.

Pay him 100k and when you are stage IV and dying, you will come crawling back to the FDA for protection.

@mattrR678 The FDA has killed far more people than it's saved. Sorry. While a drug company is forced to jump through hoops for years to get a drug approved, thousands die that could have been saved, if the drug were on the market.
But what will protect us from harmful drugs? The marketplace. Dead customers are bad for business, so drug makers have strong incentive to put out safe drugs. If one slips by, as will inevitably happen, with or without the FDA, then word gets out.

Many stupid irresponsible people will never be fit and healthy, and yes, mainstream medicine is great for them. But, in many cases, doctors could be prescribing cheap over the counter natural remedies to their patients instead of expensive pharmaceuticals. The problem is, there's no profit in it for them to do that.

People, doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies all lack the incentives that would drive down costs and increase everyone's health. This entire scheme is a result of today's laws. Naturally, the same people who passed these laws are the ones wanting to overhaul everything while blaming everyone but themselves.

@cdoftx well, If insurance companies were not allowed to lobby, and if there were no regulations, or taxes to drive up costs, the market would lower costs and prices naturally to their actual proper values. Not to mention if people had to actually pay for their own health care, and had up front fees, not just an insurance fee, and if it had direct cost to them, people might actually take incentive to care for their own health, and quit smoking, and stop eating and exercise

@BRYAN351 YA true what people need is the living day light scared out of them, how about they go to the doctor after years of eating crap food, and smoking and find out they have some problem and they have to start paying uprfont fees, that directly affect their financial situation, then people will have a short term incentive to be healthy, if its long term people usually don't care but say if they have to pay a $100 fee every time they wanted to see the doctor they wouldn't go needlessly.

Those two things rule the world, including medicine. Whenever you're dealing with multi-billion dollar markets, evil powerful people are involved, and they often commit acts too sinister for the average person to believe.

@1963danno First, I'm a P1 (PharmD), so I am the "they" that you are referring to. Second, yes we do want to cure you. Completely eliminating cancer is extremely complex. Since the tumor is made of your cells, anything we do to kill them, will also kill your healthy cells. Cancer cells are hard to kill, they grow much faster, their immortal, invade other tissues. And if just a few cancerous cells survive, we have to restart. Finally, do you think treating cancer is all doctor are good for?

The Truth is that Obama's health care reform largely just maintained the current system and tried to force everyone to pay into it. Obama blocked single payer a system that is supported by nearly all doctors and nurses an Obama blocked the government option at the last minute which would simply compete with oligopolies and monopolies to help drive down prices. The costs in the US has grown from a tiny fraction of our economy to taking up 1 of every 5 dollars and it's getting worse.

It was actually the governments intervention in the healthcare industry that drove the prices up and made it so insurance companies couldn't bargain with hospitals based on your spending account. Not for profit hospitals and "Blue insurance" Insurance was NEVER meant to cover what you couldn't afford, it was a savings account. The ADA purposely drove up the cost of Healthcare education as well.

Nothing is free. Socialized healthcare comes from taxes. Bc its run by the government it costs more. We in Canada have less Doctors and less equipment then the US. We have waiting lists that yes....ppl can die on. A close friend had to have an mri....her appointment was for 5 months down the road on halloween at 10 pm. I have to have my knees replaced but was told I have to wait till I am 50! 30 yrs bc they dont last long and they dont want to do it twice! Give me the US :)

@DylG1111 No, they do not. Alexander Fleming invented penicillin without being a part of the NHS. Nicolae Paulescu invented insulin when national health services still weren't around. What we've noticed here in Sweden is that many patients die because of the long queues that our NHS has to offer. Private health care is faster, and speed saves lives.
