@TheWhupper To be honest no, it probably costs the same as it would now. Just you can do more for the same money and some things were plain not possible eg CGI.
forgive me, but i have to admit that i was a lot less epic than i thought it'd be. i think tom baker should have gone out with a little bit more of a bang. ten went out with a symphony and a counter-tenor for goodness' sake
@moonlitshadow27 In my opinion i thought ten's regeneration was really melodramatic and over the top. It also went on for f***king ages and Tom went with a smile on his face unlike Tennant who had a partial breakdown!
@iwilldiein12seconds i agree that it went on for a long time, and that maybe it was overdone (except vale decem is one of the most epic songs ever) but the thing to maybe consider is that four was pretty young- relatively of course- but no. ten is like crap im almost out of lives... i can see why he'd be a little more freaked.
@moonlitshadow27 well, this was the 1980's. they probably wouldnt destroy a set and put it on fire back then, it would be considered a wast of money. especially with a low budget.
Having learned that David Tennant is about my age and "his" Doctor was Peter Davidson. I'm from the US and "my" Doctor was Tom Baker. I wonder, is there a generational gap of favorite Doctors because of the fact that the US viewers were getting older shows? As far as David Tennant goes, I think he's the best Doctor since Tom. Davidson wasn't bad, but Multi-Colored Coat Doctor was awful.
@barkon Not Colin's fault though, they gave him crappy stories and a bad costume then fired him for the ratings drop instead of someone who deserved it. Still, at least the writing picked up in the last two years
@eateroftheflame true, and he had the terrible job of following a legend. It can also be said that he was not very good in the role. Some of the blame he did deserve
@toonsis Listen to any of his many audio plays he did and then say that, Colin Baker was an amazing Doctor when he was given good material and the chance to do what he wanted.
@Wiggum1223 I shall I am not knocking him I said some, not all, of the blame was deserved. Its difficult to watch a Who episode if he is the Dr. He just lacked star power and didnt have much to work with. You sound like a bit of a polly-anna
@toonsis Not at all, I struggle to watch most of his episodes, I physically cannot watch a lot of it. But the one thing that makes the ones I have seen worth the effort is Colin Baker's portrayal. And I hate it when people put any of the blame on him, he deserved absolutly none of it.
@eateroftheflame Forgive me for saying this, but Michael Grade is a spineless prat. Always has been, always will be. He never cared for Doctor Who and he set it up to fail beginning with the 18 months hiatus. Doctor Who was the antithesis of the tripe that Grade, in his own bloody mind, thought people wanted to see.
@barkon i think the sixth doctor was one of the best. well, ok, the costume did bring him down a bit, but you cant deny he was a good doctor. if there had been different writers, he probably would have stayed longer. the audio books with colin's doctor are apparently very good. i think hes a good doctor because his personality is very dark which contrasts with his costume very much, which, when you think about it, works very well.
When Tom left DW it was like a milestone in my life, It was around the same time as I finished junior school and went to the "big" secondary.. It was like leaving childhood behind and the start of adolescence, Tom had and still has the ability to make childhood sound magical. He was then to me like a mad uncle we could all go and visit every saturday.. and look forward to see through the week. So many love him today because he can take us back to our childhood with such warmth.. Thanks Tom
Tom Baker remains the definitive Doctor. Tennant and Smith quite noticeably "channel" him at times!
It would have been nice if Elisabeth Sladen had stayed on through the rest of Season 14, and that she and Tom had left together at the end of Season 14. Career-wise I think it would have been better for both Tom and Lis to have done that.
Watching the DVD's of Tom's era make me feel more-and-more that Lis Sladen was the solid foundation that Tom's "Doctor" worked best from.
@63DW89A I would've preferred it if he'd left sometimes before JNT came along. I have nothing (not much) against JNT, I just don't think Tom and him had a good relationship.
@srmcd1 The 1970-76 Letts-Hinchcliffe era pulled progressivly larger adult audiences as DW explored more mature themes and stories. The JNT era, with the support and aid of the BBC, killed classic DW by progressivly turning it into a children's cartoon.
During "Planet of Evil" commentary, Tom poignantly says to Lis, "I've never been as happy as I was then...with you Elisabeth". Tom/Lis totally trusted each other and always got along. Tom had spats with all others, even Lalla Ward!
@63DW89A I understand it took him some time to warm up to Louise Jameson, but things improved and they're good friends to this day now. But I honestly feel my favorite Team Tardis from his time was him with Mary Tamm and John Leeson, who if you've seen outtakes from their time, they got on very well for the one year.
I love the Ribos Operation commentaries because of them.
@srmcd1 Tom seems to have disliked the "Leela" character; he has said in commentaries that it wasn't anything personal against Louise Jameson. But Paddy Russell, director of "Horror of Fang Rock", remembers Tom being quite rude to Louise on set, refusing to speak to her except lines for a scene, etc.
Mary Tamm's "Romana" was best. Sadly, she was not asked to return after Season 16; Tamm refused to cameo for a regeneration scene; so a problem was brewing with Mary Tamm as companion.
@63DW89A Actually, I think you've got your on-set dramas mixed up. Colin Baker was not asked back to return as the Sixth Doctor (wrongly) and so he refused to come in to film the regeneration into Sylvester McCoy (understandably).
Mary Tamm left of her own accord, and was *not* asked back to film the regeneration (plus, she was visibly pregnant). She says they parted on good terms, though.
@srmcd1 The visible pregnancy was the official reason stated for Tamm not appearing for the Romana regeneration scene. There were considerable behind-the-scenes tensions during Season 16. Producer Graham Williams did want Tamm to stay, but apparently Baker had become quite fond of Lalla Ward during "The Armegeddon Factor". There was a battle for control of DW between Baker and Williams. Tamm herself seems to have wisely decided to not return to the escalating tenisons at DW.
Cont: It wasn't merely that Colin Baker wasn't asked to return; BBC management actually directed JNT to fire him. That was unfairly dumping the problems of DW on Colin Baker's shoulders; the true problems of DW were the incompetence of JNT and the cowardice of BBC management.
The quality scripts and production of DW during the Letts-Hinchcliffe era clearly indicated that the DW format could pull high viewership, made up of 60+% adults, if it were allowed to.
@63DW89A I would've preferred it if he'd left sometimes before JNT came along at the very least. I have nothing (not much) against JNT, I just don't think Tom and him had a good relationship.

Peter Davison was crap though, first of 4 crap doctors following immediately after 4 fantastic ones. No wonder the series was canned in 89, though there were other factors such as that total twat who started Eastenders and made Dr Who shit before killing it off, can;t remember his name some Jewish faggot who thought he owned the BBC in 1989...
@PaulGBass davidson is actually very good. he actually had the story that most doctor who fans consider to be the best doctor who episode ever, The Caves of Androzani.
@animationdude56 Disagree there. Saw that at the time and its totally overrated, just Phantom of the Opera on an alien planet with cheap effects. Genesis of the Daleks, Talons of Weng Chiang, The Time Warrior, The Invasion, etc. Davison annoyed me with his repetitive harping on about how old and frail he was because he was theoretically older than Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee and Baker, yet obviously younger. Strange how no doctor since has been weakening with theoretical age, witness Matt Smith.
@PaulGBass I'd say Caves is great, but not indispensible. To me JNT only produced one story that stood above what had gone before- Enlightenment. But neither counteracts the critical mass of atrocious bad work JNT produced. Funny you said Davison seemed weak and frail, I found him to lack any of the Doctor's heroic fighting spirit- he was a total appeaser. Occasionally in Earthshock or Caves he'd show some heroism but only when written against type. To me the show should have ended on Logopolis
"It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for."
Do you know, that would be the perfect line to end the Nu-Who series on after the final actor to play the 13th Doctor leaves in how ever many years time from now, when the character of the Doctor as a whole finally dies.
I'll still be watching until the very end of the Doctor Who franchise, whenever that may be.
The makers of the new Dr Who series could learn a lot from the Tom Baker episodes. The show back then was a true family show full of adventure, scares and gripping plots. The Christopher Eccleston series was ok, but the show went downhill when David Tennant took over. it was not David Tennant's fault: it was the show's makers who turned Dr Who into an overly emotional kids' show that either tries to be funny or 'too cool for school', but never succeeds in being scary or truly exciting
I saw a doc on TV featuring Russell T Davies and you are right about his massive ego. A journalist once described him as being 'a little man with a big opinion of himself.' He has written good shows in the past, but his track record of writing sci-fi has been patchy, which is evident by the fact that the best Dr Who episodes were not written by him
@DavyTom71 bless you! i thought i was the only that had not drank the rtd kool aid. i hated the whole 'lonely god' emo theme of rusty's era of who and please do not get me started about torchwood or gwenwood. torchwood was never given a fair chance because of rusty's ego.
No, it's not just you. There are more of us who did not take to RTD's 'to cool for school' version. There have been some good episodes of DW, but on the whole the show has been dogged down by poor plots and amateurishness. The main problem is that RTD, the BBC, and the army of teenage fans cannot see any faults in the new DW series
This story is why it really winds me up that they've fetishized the Master in the new series - he killed a third of the bloody universe! Even the Daleks didn't go that far!
Nothing about the Master should be portrayed as sympathetic after Logopolis.
Although i did not like the amount of comapnions towards the end of season 18 and the fact the doctor was not with k9 or eating jelly babies I loved Logopolis. It is fantastic and shows us that the 4th doctor is the best and TOM BAKER RULES!!
I never really understood why Tom Baker's body was positioned like he was taking a nice nap in the park. Hand in his pocket, leg gently raised, etc. Hardly the landing of someone who just took a violent fall from a few hundred feet!!
Come to think of it, Logopolis was a real wall banger. The Watcher could have saved countless lives across the universe if he had just told the Doctor, "Don't go to Logolopis, the Master is going to follow you there and set things in motion that will destroy part of the universe in a wave of entropy. Go to Gallifrey instead and alert the security there!" But no, he just brings Nyssa along for the ride instead. Useless.
I care because it's a television show that I'm very fond of. The writing has had its ups and down, ranging from brilliant to batty. This was one of the more poorly written episodes, IMHO. This in particular is an episode that I remembered liking as a kid, then I watch it again and it just kinda hits me that it makes no sense. Still love the show, and Doctor #4 especially. Chill!
But the whole point of the serial was that he was 'meant' to go to logopolis as the whole motion of events would lead to him regenerating...did you watch the whole thing???
Yes, watched it multiple times. Sounds like a self fulfilling prophecy, though. He has to go to Logolopis, lead the Master there so he can go on a murder spree that inadvertently kills a chunk of the universe's population, just so he can go to a radio telescope on Earth to patch up the big blunder, and then have to regenerate? If the Doctor really had to regenerate couldn't he have just fallen down a flight of stairs rather than take part of the universe with him?
The great turning point, i gave it a red hot go but it was never the same. Terry Nation and Tom Baker had the chemistry, i cld sort of understand Toms less than desirable behavior on set, true talent has its demons. Jeez id like some details, sounds like something id' find amusing.
was there a reason behind changing doctors ? was tom just done playing the part or did they think it was time for a change? he was my favorite also since i grew up watching him.
It was an idea the series creator came up with when William Hartnell the first Doctor became to sick to stay on the show. So he figured the Doctor's face should change so he could replace William and thus that's how regeneration started.
Wow this brings back memories! I rememeber crying my eyes out as a young kid seeing my favorite Tom Baker fade away into Peter Davison and Dr Who was never quite the same again. Looking at this now makes me wish the then production team handled this better with more realistic effects, better filming and editing and a more heroic send off for the best Dr Who to date!
Sorry, but I never liked this regeneration, I've always felt is was the worst one- weak and anticlimactic. Shame really. They should have done it on film rather than video, that would have been better.
@britstarfan You know somethin, i never noticed that unitl you mentioned it there. Its funny how there's been references to past series of DW in the more recent ones and sometimes you dont notice till you watch it over & over a few times lol
Well, Chris's departure was overall more personal. However Tom's had the mixture of Epicness, nostalgia, and the sense that you are seeing the best Doctor fade away never to be seen again. For many people this sequence was the end of the Classic Doctor Who, whereas in my opinion the New Who got better when David took over.
@Scottishgal78 I agree with that the show has to move with the times, but there's still lots of loopholes which the producers has to fix up. David tennant was good but he was just too much of a pretty boy(not to mention that he hasnt exactly travelled to that many planets in his era). I would say matt smith is probably doing a better job than david mainly cos he is mixing up his dr with a bit of tom baker and peter davidson.
It's called consistency. It seems to make more sense to me that the regeneration process has the same visual effect every time it's used. A caterpillar doesn't one time become a cocoon first only to have another caterpillar fluently shapeshifting into a butterfly. It's the same changing process so, in my opinion, it needs the same visual effect throughout.
if you look the doctor uses his scarf to trip up the master but dosent put it back on then in the next scene it is some how back round his neck ??????
I remember actually seeing this very ending on tv when i was just a little young boy, and i found it quite freaky. But what i dont understand with this concept is, why is it that when the doctor got fatally wounded, he morphed into somebody else?.
You guys are going to hate me, but I love the new Doctor Who and can hardly tolerate these older seasons. The acting is terrible, the special effects are pathetic, and the plot isn't any better than it is now. But hey, that's my opinion. I didn't grow up with Tom Baker as the Doctor.
Most of those things are true to an extent, but then the cheapness of it was one of the reasons that the older Doctor Who is still adored by many people everywhere.
And I don't hate you. But then some other people probably do.
How can anyone say that the acting in the older series is worse than that in the new series. Surely not anyone who's seen Catherine Tate act... Mind you she's better than Tegan, but only marginally. And as for David Tennant, Barty Crouch Jr. Need I say more?
The new Dr. Who is very patchy. Sometimes you get great episodes, like "Blink" and "The Impossible Planet". But then there's "The Doctor's Daughter", "Love and Monsters" and the latest terrible special with Michelle Ryan and that bus. They are dire. And Catherine Tate's "acting" is not exactly fantastic either.
Some of the older Who episodes were not that great; but there were also some real gems. So I don't think you're being very fair, to be honest.
I dont think you're being fair to Catherine Tate I thought she was good & I thought at the start of series 4 where she's at the door and sees the doctor through the window - the miming bit between Donna & the doctor was funny!
OK, have to disagree with you on that one - but I think you cited one of her best bits. The miming with the Doctor was actually very funny, but in general, I didn't think she managed to convey the highs and lows as well as some of the earlier companions. But it's at least partly a matter of taste, so good luck to you if you think different! :)
First time I watched this episode I knew this scene would come but that still didn't stop me from crying when it did (and I've cryed everytime I've seen the episode since)
Silly for something that was aired on TV 28 years ago now (I wasn't even born yet!)
If I had my way Tom Baker would still be the Doctor today, he would still be fantastic.
(Not that I have anything against Doctors 5 to 10, matter of fact 6 and 10 are two of my favorits, but that's besides the point.)
I am glad the new doctor who has found an audience but like you, I can't stand it. Not that it is bad, it's just they took everything out that I liked about the old series.
Yeah but I think the idea was that he'd failed to stop the master from destroying half the universe, his body was tired and frail and the appearance of the watcher had led him to the final conlusion his time was up, so he just let go.
they shouldve had him fall from the cable--building the suspense to have him make it to the struts was unnecessary and it was as though he just gave in and fell.
I actually think it is kinda cool..like you are not really sure if he lost his grip or intentionally let go cause of the watcher and his precognition that he was about to regenerate.
It will be a hard task finding another actor to replace Anthony Ainley, he was sinister and wicked as The Master is supposed to be. Anyone who was a fan of these classic episodes will remember.
I remember reading the novelization of this and it said that when he fell from the Pharos Project he didn't yell or scream. He was resigned to his fate and calm about it. A hero to the end.

CYBERDOODY 2 years ago 3
Long live the time lords! Tom was the best. Give me some Tom Baker, K-9, and Sarah, mix the Daleks in and I'm happy.

I never really understood why Tom Baker's body was positioned like he was taking a nice nap in the park. Hand in his pocket, leg gently raised, etc. Hardly the landing of someone who just took a violent fall from a few hundred feet!!

The 4th doctor should have died not surrounded by companions but in the tardis with K-9 and eating jelly babies.
CYBERDOODY 2 years ago 2
Come to think of it, Logopolis was a real wall banger. The Watcher could have saved countless lives across the universe if he had just told the Doctor, "Don't go to Logolopis, the Master is going to follow you there and set things in motion that will destroy part of the universe in a wave of entropy. Go to Gallifrey instead and alert the security there!" But no, he just brings Nyssa along for the ride instead. Useless.

@KenoshiAkai Dude, who cares? It's just a TV show. If you don't like the way they did it, then make your own.
MonsterCrypt 2 years ago
I care because it's a television show that I'm very fond of. The writing has had its ups and down, ranging from brilliant to batty. This was one of the more poorly written episodes, IMHO. This in particular is an episode that I remembered liking as a kid, then I watch it again and it just kinda hits me that it makes no sense. Still love the show, and Doctor #4 especially. Chill!

But the whole point of the serial was that he was 'meant' to go to logopolis as the whole motion of events would lead to him regenerating...did you watch the whole thing???
zufgh 2 years ago
Yes, watched it multiple times. Sounds like a self fulfilling prophecy, though. He has to go to Logolopis, lead the Master there so he can go on a murder spree that inadvertently kills a chunk of the universe's population, just so he can go to a radio telescope on Earth to patch up the big blunder, and then have to regenerate? If the Doctor really had to regenerate couldn't he have just fallen down a flight of stairs rather than take part of the universe with him?
KenoshiAkai 2 years ago
It was destiny not multiple choice. I think Logopolis is the best Tom Baker story.

The great turning point, i gave it a red hot go but it was never the same. Terry Nation and Tom Baker had the chemistry, i cld sort of understand Toms less than desirable behavior on set, true talent has its demons. Jeez id like some details, sounds like something id' find amusing.
smakdoubt 2 years ago
Rumour is that when John Nathan Turner took over,he wanted to make a "clean sweep". so Toms resignation was accepted
( apparently the 2 men didn't get on either)

was there a reason behind changing doctors ? was tom just done playing the part or did they think it was time for a change? he was my favorite also since i grew up watching him.
fudgepacksack 2 years ago 2
Tom was ready for a change and by his own admission, had become pretty unbearable on set
bambam5000 2 years ago 2
It was an idea the series creator came up with when William Hartnell the first Doctor became to sick to stay on the show. So he figured the Doctor's face should change so he could replace William and thus that's how regeneration started.

I am sure the bit where the Master laughs is the one used where he opens the fob watch in Utopia.

Well, according to the Doctor Who wiki, it's Adrian Gibbs. But in an interview, Peter Davison says that he played the watcher in at least this part.
penguin1234554321 2 years ago
Sorry, but I never liked this regeneration, I've always felt is was the worst one- weak and anticlimactic. Shame really. They should have done it on film rather than video, that would have been better.

Doctor31074 2 years ago
@Doctor31074 In my opion David brought back Doc Who (I know Russel T Davis was the writer tho). Chris was OK but David has been the best I think!

The show has to move with the times tho, i like DW since it came back
Scottishgal78 2 years ago
@Scottishgal78 I agree with that the show has to move with the times, but there's still lots of loopholes which the producers has to fix up. David tennant was good but he was just too much of a pretty boy(not to mention that he hasnt exactly travelled to that many planets in his era). I would say matt smith is probably doing a better job than david mainly cos he is mixing up his dr with a bit of tom baker and peter davidson.

dauntlessmath 2 years ago
why aren't regeneration scenes original anymore? the smae regeneration effect has been used three times in the new series.
linuxlove4004 2 years ago
It's called consistency. It seems to make more sense to me that the regeneration process has the same visual effect every time it's used. A caterpillar doesn't one time become a cocoon first only to have another caterpillar fluently shapeshifting into a butterfly. It's the same changing process so, in my opinion, it needs the same visual effect throughout.

I remember actually seeing this very ending on tv when i was just a little young boy, and i found it quite freaky. But what i dont understand with this concept is, why is it that when the doctor got fatally wounded, he morphed into somebody else?.
Kraal7718 2 years ago
It's the show's clever little way of changing actors. Whenever the Doctor "dies," he just regenerates as a different person.
Pinskinator 2 years ago
Now why on earth do they automatically jump to the conclusion that 'The Watcher' was The Doctor all the time? A big leap don't you think?

You guys are going to hate me, but I love the new Doctor Who and can hardly tolerate these older seasons. The acting is terrible, the special effects are pathetic, and the plot isn't any better than it is now. But hey, that's my opinion. I didn't grow up with Tom Baker as the Doctor.
baguazhang2 3 years ago
Most of those things are true to an extent, but then the cheapness of it was one of the reasons that the older Doctor Who is still adored by many people everywhere.
And I don't hate you. But then some other people probably do.
385torontoglasgow583 3 years ago 3
How can anyone say that the acting in the older series is worse than that in the new series. Surely not anyone who's seen Catherine Tate act... Mind you she's better than Tegan, but only marginally. And as for David Tennant, Barty Crouch Jr. Need I say more?
Alexoneil 2 years ago 2
MjoEm32 2 years ago 2
I dont think you're being fair to Catherine Tate I thought she was good & I thought at the start of series 4 where she's at the door and sees the doctor through the window - the miming bit between Donna & the doctor was funny!
Scottishgal78 2 years ago 3
OK, have to disagree with you on that one - but I think you cited one of her best bits. The miming with the Doctor was actually very funny, but in general, I didn't think she managed to convey the highs and lows as well as some of the earlier companions. But it's at least partly a matter of taste, so good luck to you if you think different! :)
MjoEm32 2 years ago
love this bit i also love when they're carrying Peter Davison across the field, it 's epic. But for absolutely no reason.

Silly for something that was aired on TV 28 years ago now (I wasn't even born yet!)
If I had my way Tom Baker would still be the Doctor today, he would still be fantastic.

I look forward to matt though,I wish him success.
Dunes 2 years ago
Yeah but I think the idea was that he'd failed to stop the master from destroying half the universe, his body was tired and frail and the appearance of the watcher had led him to the final conlusion his time was up, so he just let go.
eastcombe127 3 years ago 2
they shouldve had him fall from the cable--building the suspense to have him make it to the struts was unnecessary and it was as though he just gave in and fell.
Pele2269 3 years ago
Totally agree with that, I always thought his 'death' wasn't believable for that reason.
Tardisgirlfrance 3 years ago
I actually think it is kinda cool..like you are not really sure if he lost his grip or intentionally let go cause of the watcher and his precognition that he was about to regenerate.
