Ironically this song was written circa 1982 when he was got out of a mental institution in London. At the time he was living with his sister and a goat in a small house in Crouch End which belonged to Rod Stewart he was supposed to be paying a peppercorn rent but had fallen behind as he was ill. Rod Stewarts Lawyers started action to evict him, his sister and his goat on Rods instructions. Elton John was asked to help out but didn't even respond.
I had to go to court today, The United States of America vs me for creating a public nuisanse, no shit. But all's well since I found all these great Baldry songs. Sitting in court I though of Conditional discharge quite abit.
@TheJodilena Reggie Dwight was only one of a number of British stars "discovered" by John.People like Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger,, Ron Woods all came thru Johns Band. He is the history of British rock.
@0520bitch Was John gay? He was the perfect gay. What I mean by that is that he would engage anybody in conversation, and he was the most charming company, but if he recognised that you weren't on "his wavelength" then he would back off, he was never predatory, he always enjoyed people. Regarding the Elton John comment, John discovered Rod Stewart and took him into his band. Rod always recognised this and gave a beautiful tribute to John at one of his concerts after John died. It's on Youtube
i'm pretty sure he wrote that song in my flat late 70's. To this day he still owes me for the food, drink and most of all fags! Seem to remember he'd just got out (dolt) his sister was living in his house in Crouch Hill with his goat from which Phyllis was evicting him! (gotta be a song in that)
It's also kind of ironic that Baldry's still singing, in a way . . . what with all the Robotnik remixes that keep popping up online. I can only hope that he'd get a chuckle out of those subversions of "children's programming."
I'm an old fart...go back to the early 60's.......and knew of John back then, later to become friends for a short period of our lives......and YES, he could steal a show......what a guy.
Given that the proclamation of being "out" has a more common meaning in current english, old John must have gotten a big chuckle out of singing that phrase with the double meaning. Saw him several times with and without Kathi MacDonald in small venues the 70's, and feel privileged to have done so - one of the all time greats. RIP.
No but seriously, I love this song. Especially the introduction.
