i wonder why parrots talk, are they trying to communicate, do they have any idea what they're saying, or are they just dumb repeaters, like a tape recorder? i'm thinking the latter.
@occultologist they've evolved to be social, and it is important for them to pay close attention to their "flock." They pay close attention to human behavior when they are pets. They do understand associations: see cat / say cat related phrase; hear phone / say "hello." Mostly they are trying to adopt learned behavior so that they fit in with the flock. They don't really understand the significance unless they are trained well, then they might learn SOME sentence building.
@feelingfluffy I can tell you that mine burps, makes farting sound and also curses. Yeah you gotta be careful what you do/say around them cuz they'll embarass you if you have guests.
Your video has been my all time favorite bird and kitty feature :-) Very diverse vocabulary and the interactions are so cute!!!! I love duos <3 I have been talking about this video for months lol
im thinking of getting a bird, how do you train them to speak so well? ive seen some videos and some don't talk very much, but just do lots of noise replicas...??
@JEDDA33 Parrots' vocal chord aren't "built" to actually speak human. However, they are extremely good at imitating sounds. This leads to parrots speaking words, where they are simply remembering and imitating the sound the word makes; as a result of that, the parrot sounds a bit like the owner, but distorted a bit.
@MelficeSilesius by human, you mean English? no one was "build" to speak english anything we learn it by repeating sounds, How does a baby learn? you teach him...dogs and other animals can do it too, not just parrots.

It makes me so sad to see any bird, especially this beautiful African Grey, confined to life inside a house away from its own kind. No flying, no trees, no sun, no other parrots for socializaton...this bird is isolated in an unnatural environment. How cruel.
mate, stop being so melodramatic... the bird most likely has a good life, if it were to be set free, he would starve to death and would have nobody because african greys aren't found in america...
it's cruel to keep a bird in a cage but this thing - i can guarantee - gets loads of attention from it's owner and is out of it's cage most of the day, he probably thinks he's people...
if anything he's better off inside because there's no hasstle and no predators...
I hear you, but I'll never accept that a bird should be "kept" by humans no matter how much attention they get. You're right; the African Grey is not found in America. They don't belong here. They belong with their kind in their natural habitat. That bird is so far removed from the life it should be living. Birds are intelligent creatures which makes their captivity all the more cruel.
well humans live in an unnatural environment, we should actually be living in the wild left to our own devices...
but we don't because we like this life better and it protests us from predators, it does the same for many domestic animals and looking at this bird, he doesn't look unhappy...
i've come to accept that many animals may possibly be happier in captivity, they may live an unnatural life with a warped perspective on reality but it may make them happy like many humans...
I appreciate your thoughts and would agree; man has created an unnatural environment for himself. However, animals in captivity have not. That's the distinction between humans and domesticated pets. I'm for cats, dogs, and injured animals in the care of loving humans, but will NEVER agree to a bird sentenced to a life indoors. They are social creatures and should be with their own kind. Worse yet, they should have the freedom to fly. It is absolutely CRUEL when they can not.
I have been wanting an african grey for a long time. they are so much easier to listen to then other parrots. I know if I get one I better do it soon, because I'm 25 already
ALL African Greys are pluckers. Large parrots are not actually suited to be pets, even though many people keep them. It's not that they dislike being owned by humans more than other pets do, but they need a LOT of mental and visual stimulation - a lot of things to do. Even if you try your hardest, many African Greys usually end up being pluckers anyway.
i've been watching quiet a few videos of talking birds and this one by far is the best!!! he is sooo cute and funny (with out the swearing is great as well!)
No parrots don't know what they're saying, they just repeat sounds they've herd since their vocal organs are similar to humans. my grandpas always goes "Will you make me a sandwich?" Its hilarious when guests are there.
omg, parrots are so awesome! what do you have to do to make them talk like this? do they do that on their own when they hear things? or do they just randomly call out stuff they've heard?
LOL That reminds me of my grey; she meows and calls the cats, but when the cats do show up, she yells at them to get down and calls them bad kitty. Otherwise my bird is the same way very chatty.
There's anecdotal evidence that some parrots have an idea that what they say is linked to humans' responses - asking for food or scratches and receiving is fairly obvious reinforcement. Saying 'hello' when someone enters a room is less obvious.
hamsty134: The owner had to have taught it to the bird. Where the owner got it from is the second Austin Powers movie where Dr. Evil tells Mini-Me not to gnaw on mini-Mr. Bigglesworth. If the owner didn't teach it, then the bird must've picked it up from the movie on its own.
There is nothing wrong with Sylvia in this video and her relationship with the kitty is adorable. Any good parrot owner knows a talking parrot is a happy parrot, Sylvia is obviously very happy! :)
