After Zelaya realized he did not have the support of the military to proceed with his illegal referendum he tried to carry it out with the help of supporters. On 06/24 mobs broke into an air force base where the rerendum ballots were being held in custody. The military allowed the President and supporting mobs to break in and remove the materials. He was removed from office on 06/28, after much deliberation by Congress. This is now being called a coup d'etat by international community.

Zelaya defied Honduran institutions (Congress, Judicial System) when he, for several months, carried out a campaign in favor holding a referndum (which he later called survey) with the purpose of creating a National Constituent Assembly with the power of rewriting the entire constitution. This process requires that Congress be abolished during this period of time. The way he was doing this was illegal. He was informed so by Supreme Court. Yet, he publicly mocked Congress and the Supreme Court.
