Seen this shovel working when I was a kid ( back in the sixties) and then took my kids to see it several years ago. Never get tied of it. I wish they would have kept more of these monsters around. Thanks for the video.

Well, I just visited Big Brutus today because that is pretty much all my town has to offer. The kids in the lower grades at my school are deathly afraid of it.

Anyway, it stopped mining in 1974. But whatever. It would take years for it to go 10 miles. When it was working, it went 0.22 MPH. How crazy is that?

A couple years back there was this crazy dude that wanted to go base jumping and he jumped off of the very top of Big Brutus. He died before he knew what hit him. He didnt even have time

This is the last stripping shovel of any siginificance thats left.This BE1850-B Is unlike any of the P&H or Bucyrus electric shovels that load these big off highway haulers today.Stripping shovels were used to strip the land down to where the coal is.Thats why they are called stripping shovels.

there`s one drawback to electric shovels you need an entire electric plant to run one they are built on site then when the job is done they are abandoned because it would cost too much to tear down and rebuild at the next jobsite.

brutus was powered by a powerplant and supply cables it is a fully electric dc shovel was roughly a 5 inch powercable running into both ends of it
