Well she was a mambo singer and a Peruvian folk singer. She crossovered into American "exotica" in the 1950's - after all Xavier Kugat and Desi Arnaz had done the same thing. But if she had trained for opera instead, who knows just how great she might have been. It was just a matter of proper training and technique. I can detect bel canto opera technique in some of her singing. Lucia Di Lammermoor for example or Mozart's the Queen of the Night, etc. She was a coloratura soprano/mezzo
Acually Miss Sumac did perform some Opera, such as the Magic Flute, and when Miss Callas was asked in an inverview which singers she admired, Miss Callas first reply was Yma Sumac, and she said not only admire, but was jeleous of Miss Sumac's voice and abilities.

Yma had 4.5 ocatve voice in all her recordings, but some singers have moments when they overhit their ranges so I assume Yma was even able to hit 6 octaves in some moment of her career...

This album is so unique: a mixture of andean song, of mambo with that such incredible voice. I'm not sure what your definition of a soprano is but she most definitely is one and a superb one at that. I am myself a trained soprano who can only wish my range had her capacity. Only one with no formalized musical training would say that she wasn't a true soprano

Yma Sumac no ha perdido su notas graves y profundas en cuanto a su coloratura que yo sepa la tiene igual. En cuanto a sus elevadísimas octavas me reservo una opinión, pero es admirable que esta divina soprano haya mantenido esa capacidad inaudita a pesar de los años de cantar mejor que cualquier soprano joven. One of m y friends is an entertainment lawyer who reps her and tells me she lives in LA in a little house under an alias and walks to her local market daily to buy her groceries and nobody has any clue of who she is there...he wouldnt tell me her alias or where in LA she lives....for privacy reasons obviously...

It is clear that commercial success maybe led Yma Sumac to go for the easy option in most cases. However, if one day you have the chance to hear the album "Mambo", I am sure you won't think it. This album is so unique: a mixture of andean song, of mambo with that such incredible voice. Let's hear it (maybe some of the songs have been posted here) and you will see that very few could do this...

I'm not sure what your definition of a soprano is but she most definitely is one and a superb one at that. I am myself a trained soprano who can only wish my range had her capacity. Only one with no formalized musical training would say that she wasn't a true soprano

Eso es buena música, no las otras mamadas peruanas como: Wendy Sulca, Las Gemelas del Amor o la Tigresa del Oriente. Lo que esta mujer hace es una verdadera fregonería, y eso que ella en verdad se dedicó a hacer música folklórica en su país, no las cagadas de estas otras artistuchas!!!

I haven't heard this voice for perhaps 50 years. I never forgot it, though, from when I was a kid in high school. Her range was phenomenal.

ella si canto Lakme, asi como la flauta magica, en su gira a la urss en 1961 tambien añadió arias de Puccini, Mascagni, Verdi y Wagner.ella qquizo cantar en el Met, pero Rudolf Bing no quiso porque no tenía suficientes conocimientos musicales (dos grandes tenores de nuestros tiempos y de todos conocidos tampoco los tienen y han hecho carrera).

Of course you alll know the YMA SUMAC is a "man-made"legend. Her name was spelled backwards to give her an unusual history. Spelled correctly "forwards" - her name is Amy Camus. Mexican from California.

The story that she was actually born Amy Camus (Yma Sumac backwards) in Brooklyn or Canada is a hoax.This reference asserts that she was known as Imma Sumack in recordings made before she went to the U.S.; Capitol Records changed the spelling to the more exotic "Yma Sumac".It was rumored that Yma Sumac was actually a woman named Amy Camus who worked in the accounting department, but that was eventually disproved by Amy herself in her famous "I can't even sing" memo of August 1951.

Grata sorpresa encontrar a Yma acá. Qué bueno que se dedicó a cantar lo que quiso y que jamás fue a una escuela lírica donde hubiera perdido su ingenuidad y desviado su rumbo de autenticidad. ¿Está viva aun Yma?

Yma Sumac no ha perdido su notas graves y profundas en cuanto a su coloratura que yo sepa la tiene igual. En cuanto a sus elevadísimas octavas me reservo una opinión, pero es admirable que esta divina soprano haya mantenido esa capacidad inaudita a pesar de los años de cantar mejor que cualquier soprano joven. Ver LA MOLINA LIVE en Bruselas, y años más tarde en Montreal!! asombró a todos y con mayor edad!!!!

One of m y friends is an entertainment lawyer who reps her and tells me she lives in LA in a little house under an alias and walks to her local market daily to buy her groceries and nobody has any clue of who she is there...he wouldnt tell me her alias or where in LA she lives....for privacy reasons obviously...
