Will everyone stop saying how this is better than Bucks Fizz, because it is not! Both songs have stood the test of time- I heard Bucks Fizz's "Making Your Mind Up" on the radio last week (yes really!), and it still sounds great nearly thirty years on!
´´verkaforever´´ people respect that you are from UK and love UK´s entry more than this, but UK´s entry is childish and this one is for more mature listeners.....
No sorry, Bucks Fizz is just crap...how dare you compare this song to foolish and crap Bucks Fizz??? This must be one of the best songs of eurovision ever!!!
Switzerland gave us zero points - those rascals. Mrs. Valeitis still has the same hairdo till today, she is beautiful es ever. Her husband died not long ago of lung cancer. No scandals over the years. Remarkable lady.

Remarkably unsophisticated musically. How this ever reached second place in the contest is beyond me. This would have been a great winner - in about 1958. It may have done so well simply because continental Europe has always lagged behind America and Britain in musical taste - in this case by several decades! Amazing that this was produced in the same year as the "Io Senza Te": this already sounded dated at the time, while the Swiss entry is still fresh today.
The subject matter was a bit lighter to say the least, and the stripping in those days was novel. The German and French songs were both worthy winners, but somehow moved me to tears..
This song should have won. The best eurovision entry ever.
Nice Performance, Nice melody, Nice meaning. I've never voted in eurovision, but if I had the chance I would have sent 20 sms. Juries did not know how to vote that time!
this song and den vilda,sweden,1996 are my two favourite euro songs ever.Unfortunately one finished second and the other third. Apart from 1985 ,the winner has never been my favourite!
I am English. How this song never won I will never know. Ours was okay and second place about thirty points behind johnny blue would be about right in my opinion.
i have to disagree with most of you. the song is absolutely nothing special. what makes it a hit is the excellent performance of lena. that alone speaks volumes about what really talented people can do, and yes, she could have won. but it would have been her and not the song. greetings from greece
She was great, the song even better.west germany should have won,no doubt about it and the year before with THEATRE.LONDON CALLING! The best song in 79 was socrtes,Elpida I think.Greetngs to Greece.
I feel the meaning is not only what talented people can do. Through blidness a boy indicates that people can do many thinks, even if they think that their life has not any meaning. It is still the beginning of eighties, that people with special needs did not have the contemporary support.
well i'm German and English but i've always liked the German, continental and Israeli songs better than the English ones and this one was really great. Thanks and this was a great year for songs.,
Long live Germany and it's WONDERFUL people and BEAUTIFUL country!! You have a fantastic language and a style of your own! Best wishes to Germany and all who live there!
Lena was actually 37 years old when she sang Johnny Blue in Eurovision, but it is the best ever Eurovision song with a person's name in the title.Closely followed by "Monica" for Cyprus from that same 1981 contest.
@ union She is Still on Stage in the German TV.She is here still very Popular.she is Living in Munich (München),Bavaria. She is Married and have two grown Children.(Age 26 and 36).
Am I the only one whom she reminds of Karen Carpenter? A very soulfoul song from Germany; very good indeed and would have been a deserving winner. It would have brought the 'home country scream' a full twelve years earlier.
Great, strong ballad. I only knew the Finnish translation of this before. Now I hear the original one first time. Johnny laulujasi kaikki soittaa.... mikä onkaan väri taivaan.
This is a wonderful song & (maybe) should have won!! For me Germany have had so many great songs over the 70s & 80s - and yet only one win!! A real tradegy - maybe its just not the BRITS thats hated!
It`s nice to hear when people from other Countries like this song! Cause I`m from Germany and i know that we didn`t heard for a very loooooooong time such a wonderful Song from us like this one. For me this was Germanys greatest and strongest song - i can`t stop hearing this cause i love the lyrics and the melody to death!
Her pronunciation is lithaunian because that is where she originally comes from. but in bavaria they do the RRR too, that's true. and it certaimly IS charming.
This is the best entry from Germany ever and shoud had win the contest.

When i listen to them now, i agree... Johnny Blue is a wonderfull song, it should have won.
But I remember then the Bucks Fizz performance was so amazing... with the skirts flying around... everybody thought it was the best.

This should have won. I think that Bucks Fizz appeals to younger audience but adults appreciate more the 1981 entries of Germany and Switzerland.

I disagree. Johnny Blue is a nice song, but Making Your Mind Up is NOT ridiculous! I'm from the U.K., but I'm not just biased- Bucks Fizz were great!
verkaforever 4 years ago
Bucks Fizz were great, apart from the fact they were not very good singers and their song was nothing at all without the act.
