I wonder if the distro you tried was Kubuntu. If it was the it may not be that KDE is so bad but that the entire OS of all of the *buntu family are based on unfinished work.
"theres just so much useless stuff on it...its just not good"................"you have the mac type aqua scroll bar or whatever you wanna call it....and then this like different one".......................LOL
Your personal rant is limited by your limited knowledge and necessities. You have no idea of the power behind KDE and many of the features you rant about are there, you just don't know where they are because you haven't even tried looking. Sorry, but this is the way it is.
Sorry but I still think that the motifs you used in your rant video are unfounded and very newbish. ;)
PS - It doesn't matter to me what Linus Torvalds uses although it is interesting to know facts like that for yourself. You can be sure that Linus is not using Gnome for the same reasons you might be.
Im sorry but KDE is ugly as sin. Honestly square icons in the taskbars. I just can't stand to look at it. Gnome all the way or Xfce or Fluxbox or anything else that isn't KDE.
really? I have KDE along with gnome on this Ubuntu box and I think it's great. I think Doplhin is very beautiful. Much better looking than Nautilus. I'm using gnome right now but I might switch when KDE 4.2 comes out. You should check some videos of KDE 4.2. It's sweet.
I preferred KDE to GNOME before they "upgraded" from the 3.5 series. 4.1 doesn't have anywhere near the combustibility and options as 3.5 did. It seems like they rushed to get it out the door. So I'm going to re-load my computer (duel booting Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.10) sometime next week and I'm not going to be using Kubuntu for that reason.
Is there ANY way to delete files from the Desktop by just right-clicking them and click "move to thrash"? all I can do is delete the icon alone and I thought they would fix this by 4.1.2 which is what I'm using right now. Also, now when I save a file to Desktop (eg. a .jpg image or some folder) the file doesn't appear on the Desktop itself, it appears on the directory but not the Desktop unless you create an icon for it which I think is ridiculous and flawed.
I tried KDE4 on Kubuntu & openSuse. I was very disappointed. I tried it because a lot of people say its great. I much prefer my default window manager, Xfce!
I never used to like Gnome but I don't mind 2.22.x in Ubuntu. Especially some of the new themes I've seen for it, Gnome finally looks good (I always thought it was butt ugly).
So thats all good... what bothers me is not Gnome itself but where people are going with it with Mono and Moonlight... thats bad news I think.
KDE needs to be implemented into the distributions better. Most distributions do this with Gnome because it is "simpler" for the common user. PCLinuxOS is perfect and they will have a new version with KDE 4.2. Apparently most distributions are dropping KDE for Gnome. 4.2 will be the complete version of the 4 series then we will begin working on stability and 4.5 will be the most stable like 3.5.9 is now but way better. QT is stable if you implement it properly like they do with Gnome.
If you could put two and two together and have any *nix experience you would realize most people know thus by now. GTK is just as unstable if not more-so than QT. Gnome is under-developed by blind diarrheal stricken monkeys.
Thanks for the kind words. What would a Windows user who has also been using Linux and other UNIX system-like operating systems know? I reread the comment. I finally understand. Please don't insult the GNOME developers. But hey, maybe you could show them something by assisting them. They are free software!
sry not ubuntu Gnome. I think if KDE was taken out of the picture in the Ubuntu derivatives, gnome would get more attention (obviously). That should lead to the improvement of gnome. I don't really think that its gonna happen though. I heard it from another youtube. You could ask him if you like. nnasby63. I want to see KDE get to 4.5..but when I used it....well lol.. you get the picture. I prefer the look of KDE over gnome...but its just not stable yet :'(
Yes, 4.1 still has issues but its getting there. It'll take time for it all to come together but the heavy lifting has all been done.
BTW Amarok 2.0 Beta 1 is out. It does give a bit of a glimpse of where KDE apps are heading rather than just being a straight port like most are atm. Its unfinished but its very nice.
That about sums up KDE4.x/KDE4apps atm, still bleeding edge. We know it will all be great, but it just takes time.
I like bleeding edge though & already use Amarok 2.0 daily :p
I'm keeping my eye on it...KDE 4 does look promising but I still have my doubts just because of my experience with stability. I love compiz but I would gladly give it up for KDE 4s kick ass interface.
Whats with your videos? All the sudden it has videos that arn't yours that link to the other people. never seen it before, plus if you added these, the day you have emeek on your friends/videos list is the day you become biased. Emeek is an apple fanboy that has stock in apple that just wants you to buy computers so he can get more money.
Oh thank god, thought you added these. I knew you liked Lockergnome, dont mind chris, hes not biased he just prefers to use apple products but doesn't bash Windows all the time. But Emeek just plain sucks.
-Your GTK apps look rubbish on a fresh kde 4 install because it is using the default gtk theme. You can change this by simply installing the GTK-QT engine, at a guess i would say its not included by default because it depends on GTK.
-Im not sure what you mean by the scroll bars being inconsistent, they all look the same to me.
-KDE 4.x has a lower memory footprint than gnome (thats with composite effects be it compiz or Kwin, turned off for both).
-The ten different menus thing is also quite amusing, but i understand that some people don't like the kicker menu, right clicking on the button lets you revert to the classic style menu. Oh and there are at least 2 other types of menu out there for you to try.
no its just gtk is made for gnome i used a dark color scheme and it was good i would consider it more if someone told me a good distro yhats not kubuntu or opensuse wat do u use
I use Ubuntu and then installed kde 4 on that from a kde specific repo, i found this was the best solution for me because Ubuntu + kde and wifi seems to work a lot better than regular kubuntu and wifi (that and kubuntu is just a bit rubbish imo). I have no idea why i get this problem, its an intel wifi card.....
I like Open SuSE but again i get wifi issues, so its a no no.
Yes, Canonical only employs one person to work on Kubuntu. The rest is done by the community. Jonathan Riddle does a great job for one guy though... I wonder if he ever sleeps...
If you have the libraries installed (and you will), KDE apps will retain their native look no matter what desktop you use them on. GNOME, XFCE, Enlightenment... even Windows. KDE apps look like KDE apps.
I use Fedora on a USB key, so I don't know if this is part of the problem, but GNOME has caused a lot of problems. It's completely failed and killed my distro a few times now, forcing me to boot into Vista and slap a new copy of the distro on my key. I strongly disliked KDE 4.0, but I love KDE 4.1, and it hasn't caused me any problems. I haven't had it fail and kill my distro yet, knock on wood.
I still like GNOME, but I like KDE a bit more. I do agree that there is some bloat in KDE...
fedora in my opinion doesnt serve gnome justice try ubuntu with wubi and you will see differences once u see the simplicity, power and combustibility of gnome you will like it
...for example, 4.1 came with way too many image viewers and media players, but that problem's solution was as simple as removing the programs in Konsole.
I'm a bit neutral on the whole KDE vs GNOME thing. I personally see it as a matter of preference, not as a matter of superiority. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses. I prefer to use KDE. If you prefer to use GNOME, then more power to you!
Does the KDE vs GNOME argument even matter? In the end, we're still Linux users. :-)
I'd really love to see what you think about GNOME 3. So innovative.
*sarcasm* KDE 4 > GNOME 3.
KDE 4 also resembles the Windows 7 desktop, that doesn't mean it's competing with it.

dude u are a newb sure kde 4 is getting better and 3.5 was awesome but its not as good as gnome. Even Linus Torvalds switched to gnome.

One of the reasons I prefer KDE is because the UI is so configurable 'out of the box'. And Plasma is more flexible than the old KDE.

KDE and Kubuntu is being dropped by canonical. That means Ubuntu is going to get a major boost in development :)
UbuntuLee 3 years ago
Err when and where did Canonical say that ?
Johnathan Riddle is the only person I'm aware of who Canonical actually employs to work on Kubuntu specifically. He does a tremendous job.
So how would axing Johnathan Riddle's job deliver any "major boost" in Ubuntu development ?
