We need to force these countries to open their markets to our cars and every other product for that matter or we should be taxing what they import into our country. We should have done this over 30 years ago. Maybe then the auto industry wouldn't be in the shape there in now and we wouldn't have went from being the leading industrialized country in the world to being a country where people make careers out of minimum wage jobs.
A propper bankruptcy without government intervention would've made all those bloated, over inflated union contracts null and void which means fair wages & retirement plans for workers along with immense savings for GM & Chrysler. GM spends more on retirement plans then they do on steel.
The UAW was a big part in helping to destroy GM with outlandish demands and greedy Union Leaders who sucked away capital from GM. The UAW also put no fear into their workers producing these cars in turn making the workers perform to half of their capacity. This is why Toyota, Honda, and European car makers produce better quality cars.
I agree 100% I've seen inside a GM plant & the workers were insanely lazy compared to anywhere I've worked. The first step for American car manufacturers is to get rid of the UAW.
So Toyota being the #1 selling car in America and Honda being the #2 selling car doesn't tell you anything? Another reason the American car manufacturers are failing is because of the too lucrative pension plans the UAW handed out to the retired workers. Almost $6,000 per vechile sold goes towards paying retiree benefits.
Lets also talk about the unfair trade agreements between Japan and the U.S. The constant manipulation of the yen, the bloodsucking UAW etc.
GM produces cars with quality and dependability equal or better than their Japanese counterparts. Its hard to change the perception of consumers after you sold them junk for 20 years straight. I won't argue that, GM did build shit for a long time, and they threw alot of customers away because of it.
Obviously you don't visit car reviewer websites, car magazines, or JDPower reliability rankings. So to correct you, no, GM does not build cars with quality and dependability equal or better then their Japanese counterparts. As a matter of fact, I am a frequent visitor and researcher for the Chicago Autoshow and from personal experience I can tell you that quality of GM vehicles (especially interior) was and still is quite horrible.

For every thing you post that says Japanese cars are better in quality....I could post an article/rating from any of the above sources that says its a level playing field between the U.S automakers and Japan....
I know I'm way late into this, but I would be damned careful about trusting magazines. I've been reading about some of the inside bullshit that went on in the dirt-bike magazine industry a few decades ago. The basic summary of the story is, the magazines get a huge proportion of their money from ad revenue, and companies are more likely to sell ads in your magazine if you like their bike (or car). I'm not saying this biases toward Japanese automakers, but I am saying there is bias to be seen.

auto making used to be really good. The japanese made renovations from the assembly lines to the assembly robots. Japanese always made there vehicles for effienency. It wasnt until about 1990 when their vehicles began to become reliable. (exeception of datsun and a few others). People now get to buy efficient and reliable cars. I would prefer the jap market to take over because they hold many car making comps in the US. and ship to japan

The root cause of the problem is corporatism and the fact that they control the economics and government policy; for far too long. FDR even was controlled by the fed reserve cartel and scrapped the gold standard. The "free trade" and globalisation of economics exploits third-world nations and creates core-periphery dependency zones. We really need to have monetary reform and both Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich have argued for this.

If the USA looses its market fundamentals; then it will be even harder hit on the economic front. Thus everything should be done in the short-term to save manufacturing; but in the longer term try and campaign against the economic and trade-systems that result in these auto industries having problems in the first place.
The problem with this line of thinking is that whenever the government chooses the winners and losers in the market, you have just stepped into Fascism and it can only go further down that road once you step foot on that path. We can slow it down and hope to defy history and experience, but it's unlikely.
That is why it is important that governments' make very careful consultative decisions before interfering in economics. Its all about balance I feel. For example; if we just have total privatization of everything without any regulation...it does not stop monopolies from developing or lower quality of service in healthcare, education, etc. The other extreme is socialising too many things; or governments' fixing prices. We also need to look at the big picture...i.e. fed reserve causing things.
You'll find that true monopolies are not formed without force of arms or force of government. The government is often portrayed as the knight in shining armor that protects us from evil companies; it's quite the opposite.
The government has had a gigantic increase in involvement with medical care in the past 15 years. The results are dismal.
Criticisms of the free market always result in mistaking problems of govt interfering with the free market as opposed to actual problems.
The thing Ron Paul is missing that the reason these companies are in a bad position is due to globalisation and out-sourcing to poorer countries where labour and manufacturing costs are cheaper. Thus American car manufacturing firms cannot compete in an already saturated and highly competitive market. The solution is not to bail them out (although that should be an option given the potential for jobs lost); but to change the economic policies of the fed reserve and globalist trade policies.
A union is a labor cartel/monopoly. It only works if there is legislation or other force that hinders free-market workers from participating, because any employer would prefer the alternative. I have no problems with Unions until they have their washington men fiddle with free entry.
Globalization in the political sense is actually the opposite of a free market system. It means global governance and globally regulated economies. The NWO movement is entirely against the free market.

The free market might have worked if there had actually ever been one. The free market has only been free on our end. If you could show me one trade agreement this country has made where our industry wasn't put at a disadvantage I would eat it. I like Ron Paul but I don't know if I agree with him on trade policy. We should have done this over 30 years ago. Maybe then the auto industry wouldn't be in the shape there in now and we wouldn't have went from being the leading industrialized country in the world to being a country where people make careers out of minimum wage jobs.

The UAW was a big part in helping to destroy GM with outlandish demands and greedy Union Leaders who sucked away capital from GM. The UAW also put no fear into their workers producing these cars in turn making the workers perform to half of their capacity. This is why Toyota, Honda, and European car makers produce better quality cars.

So to correct you, no, GM does not build cars with quality and dependability equal or better then their Japanese counterparts. As a matter of fact, I am a frequent visitor and researcher for the Chicago Autoshow and from personal experience I can tell you that quality of GM vehicles (especially interior) was and still is quite horrible.

I know I'm way late into this, but I would be damned careful about trusting magazines. I've been reading about some of the inside bullshit that went on in the dirt-bike magazine industry a few decades ago. The basic summary of the story is, the magazines get a huge proportion of their money from ad revenue, and companies are more likely to sell ads in your magazine if you like their bike (or car). I'm not saying this biases toward Japanese automakers, but I am saying there is bias to be seen.

auto making used to be really good. The japanese made renovations from the assembly lines to the assembly robots. Japanese always made there vehicles for effienency. It wasnt until about 1990 when their vehicles began to become reliable. (exeception of datsun and a few others). People now get to buy efficient and reliable cars. I would prefer the jap market to take over because they hold many car making comps in the US. and ship to japan

The root cause of the problem is corporatism and the fact that they control the economics and government policy; for far too long. FDR even was controlled by the fed reserve cartel and scrapped the gold standard. The "free trade" and globalisation of economics exploits third-world nations and creates core-periphery dependency zones. We really need to have monetary reform and both Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich have argued for this.

If the USA looses its market fundamentals; then it will be even harder hit on the economic front. Thus everything should be done in the short-term to save manufacturing; but in the longer term try and campaign against the economic and trade-systems that result in these auto industries having problems in the first place.

The problem with this line of thinking is that whenever the government chooses the winners and losers in the market, you have just stepped into Fascism and it can only go further down that road once you step foot on that path. We can slow it down and hope to defy history and experience, but it's unlikely.

That is why it is important that governments' make very careful consultative decisions before interfering in economics. Its all about balance I feel. For example; if we just have total privatization of everything without any regulation...it does not stop monopolies from developing or lower quality of service in healthcare, education, etc. The other extreme is socialising too many things; or governments' fixing prices. We also need to look at the big picture...i.e. fed reserve causing things.

You'll find that true monopolies are not formed without force of arms or force of government. The government is often portrayed as the knight in shining armor that protects us from evil companies; it's quite the opposite.
The government has had a gigantic increase in involvement with medical care in the past 15 years. The results are dismal.
Criticisms of the free market always result in mistaking problems of govt interfering with the free market as opposed to actual problems.

The thing Ron Paul is missing that the reason these companies are in a bad position is due to globalisation and out-sourcing to poorer countries where labour and manufacturing costs are cheaper. Thus American car manufacturing firms cannot compete in an already saturated and highly competitive market. The solution is not to bail them out (although that should be an option given the potential for jobs lost); but to change the economic policies of the fed reserve and globalist trade policies.

From how lucrative their retirement benefits are to their actual wages, union workers are overpaid.
Quotas and tariffs on factors of production, such as aluminum and steel. We pay more for these things because they earn a foothold using lobbying.
Atlas Shrugged revisited...The free market could provide answers, but then our politicians wouldnt be able to make such a power grab.

A union is a labor cartel/monopoly. It only works if there is legislation or other force that hinders free-market workers from participating, because any employer would prefer the alternative. I have no problems with Unions until they have their washington men fiddle with free entry.
Globalization in the political sense is actually the opposite of a free market system. It means global governance and globally regulated economies. The NWO movement is entirely against the free market.
