  • @Jarrod005 I'm very surprised too that she didn't win. Remember though, Patti faced a lot of competition that year from Joanna Gleason as the Bakers Wife from Into the Woods. Gleason's classic performance was very deserving as well. Plus Patti didn't dance almost at all in the 87 revival unlike Sutton in the 11 revival

  • Not once did she let a note fall. That at the end... I couldn't believe it. Love this!!!

  • I don't like Sutton nearly as much as Patti, duh Foster has talent, but to me it's like Patti IS Reno.

  • YES this is how this song should be sung! THIS is Reno!

  • It still baffles me she didn't win the Tony for this.

  • Well holy crap. I have to say she sings and sells the hell out of this song. This is crazy good. That being said, she can't dance, which poses a problem for the role overall, and she's definitely a bit of an over-actor. I prefer Sutton overall, but I'll be damned if this isn't just the best rendition of this song I've ever heard.

  • Sutton isnt bad, but i do not like her voice much, it doesnt fit reno to me. I feel lile reno has to have much more power in her voice,

I guess i'm just gonna always be a fan of the 1960 cast

  • @bpark9thdmIA No, no, no. You've got it all wrong, Walt1896 (a.k.a. bpark9thdmIA, lmajoy94, RadiationViolet, hazeleyedreamer11, WendlaBergman, mmbr01rrf, etc.)! Patti's presence alone throws Sutton's performance into oblivion. Patti performs better in all respects and Sutton Foster is THE nobody next to her.

  • Sutton Foster has NOTHING on her!

  • love that vibrato.

  • Never really was a fan of Patti's, but that was pretty amazing...and to that crowd!! Not exactly the ideal audience.

  • Seeing the first lady of Argentina in the White House performing at this diplomatic ball fills my heart with pride for the descamisados!

  • Stand her at all!

  • I can't under

  • This was one of my favorite parts of Anything Goes when I saw it in July :)

  • Sorry, but Sutton Foster doesn't even hold a candle to Patti!

  • @MorbidVixen I TOTALLY agree with you, my friend. Patti is THE BEST!

  • That fuckin ENDING...Oh my GOOOOD 3:08 on is like a freakin orgasm. Brilliant sing IT GIRRL SING IIIIT!! WHOOO!!!

  • This is not her part

  • @SUTTONFOSTERNYC she actually was in anything goes in the 80's

  • At 2:50 I think it's funny how she slaps her ass when she says "my heart".

  • I love Patti LuPone--she does amazing things in other roles--but this is not her role....her singing just gets jerky, with too many swinging notes...some times it sounds like shes screaming it...

  • When I first saw videos of the revival with Sutton Foster, I was immediately a Sutton fan, but with this video, I think Patti won me over to her side...

  • can you imagine: you sit in an audition and suddenly somebody comes in and sings like that! I would be jumping off the chair

  • My friend was like "who's patti lupone?" and i was like "who's not patti lupone!!!!!" and i just love this song and i am 14.. :D

  • I think Patti Lupone is some kind of a goddess, not a human... actually I'm quite sure.. <3

  • no one else on earth could ever have pipes like patti does. she's in my opinion the goddess of female voice.

  • Patti should commit no further wreckage to the roles of Ethel Merman.

  • Absolutely Insane! The amount of energy and unabashed control she had over that band and the room just isn't done any more. Amazing vocals and performance. She slapped her ass at the President of the United States. I mean it was a Bush so I don't blame her. Patti is the Master.

  • Mr. Bush's only good move was inviteing this timeless diva.

  • Patti burning down the White House with that performance!!! She needs to star in a revival of Call Me Madam. She would definitely be the best hostess with the mostest.

  • @AsiaMs I agree with you. In fact, recently listening to music from 'Call Me Madam' I was thinking who could play the role now, and the list was not long. I thought Patti Lupone, firstly, and then thought about Marin Mazzie and Audra MacDonald. I think in 10 years, Kristen Chenoweth could do it (vocally could do it now, indeed could do anything with that 5 octave range, but she still looks 20, so would not fit physically). Patti would be 1st choice for any role for the 50+ c'gory. More or less.

  • Is this song supposed to be a crude inuendo, or is my mind sick?

  • Such a fantastic performer.

  • @the13thfreak: I did!!! Was disappointed I didn't get to hear her belt something out of that brassy magnificent trap, but always glad to see my favorite Diva of Stage!!!

  • i think i watched this video about 250 times...

  • she is a fabulous singer

  • WHO SAW HER ON GLEE??

  • Has she ever NOT been fabulous?

  • i want to find tihs with sutton foster

  • 4 people don't know what good music sounds like

  • :o

    whoooaaa.

  • Patti looks like she's having a good time. Most great entertainers do.

    Tnx 4 the exciting post.

  • AWESOME! my high school its doing this and i am one of reno's angels:CHARITY! :3 i seriously for the audition sang with this song and the judges were like oh gosh you sound a lot like her and i was like well she is awesome and then i ended up NOT getting the part cause im a junior and not a senior. FML.

  • @ToriSimons08 That's so cool I was also played Charity :)

  • like this if you've ever or are doing this as your musical in high school (:

  • @foxxibr0wn

    Does community Theatre count? :P

  • Auditioning for the role of Reno in my schools production of Anything Goes, im so excited!

  • BLOWWW GABRIEL BLOWWW

  • God bless , Lu Pone! The most important heir of the kinds of Mermans, Martins, Lawrences,etc... A breath of good air!

  • Im doing this for a musical at school

  • @bangbang00exoh These kinds of comments are crazy. She doesn't have a good voice? Her voice is one of the most versatile and beautiful ever on Broadway. Not a good actress...she is acclaimed for her performance in muscials and plays. This is not belting...this is singing. And her diction? That is the oldest criticism and totally false...she has excellent diction and pronounces every syllable clearly.

  • ahh signature smirk. :] always gets me

  • I admit, I'm not really a Patti LuPone fan, but her voice just WORKS with this song.

  • I love her growls. =)

  • baby eaters "did" this song great

  • she is asking Gabriel too blow her

  • freaking jelous she is soo good

  • She is a beast!!!!!

  • Unfreakin real. Patti LuPonne is a god!

  • I've never seen anyone have so much fun doing songs as she does. The look on her face after every one, like she thrives at the end of every song is just wonderful :).

  • i love patti ku pone shes an amazing actress and singer but my god she has terrible taste in clothes

  • @saint973 Yes she is amazing at singing and acting nobody like her. But she has said she doesn't care about appearances she has people dress her for important events and what I love is that she will where the same thing twice :)

  • Words cannot describe how amazing she is.

  • i do prefer elaine paige but patti is such an entertainer i loved that

  • this is AMAZING. Patti is sensational :)

  • @scanbump .,oh, an unknown person from youtube is criticizing a julliard graduate who actually is the most reknown figure in the name of musical theatre... people are so judgemental... learn how to sing like her first or exceed her superiority before you say those words to her because at the end of the day you'll be sitting in the theatre as an audience and she will always be performing until she retires...

  • @scorpioninpink I don't know about the person you're talking to, but I don't want to sing like her. She doesn't use diction and I'm not a personal fan of her voice anyways. Too harsh for me. Also, she's not really that great of an actress in my opinion. I'm not saying I am better than her because I can't belt to save my life, but I know what makes a good actress and a good voice. She's not a good actress, and I've heard better voices. Just saying. Also, she's too full of herself.

  • Oh my, she just sinks the heck out of that, doesn't she? I heard it on XM today and was so glad to find it here...thanks for posting! Even a shot of that fantastic trumpet player - he really matched Patti, didn't he?!

  • Patti LuPone is a true Musical Theatre treasure. A great star.

  • how the hell can you say that? do you know what it takes to sing like that? obviously not.

  • hun....NOBODY out sings patti .... :)

  • @westbrookwinsit HUN…Patti is simply fab, but Merman blows her out of the water.

  • @westbrookwinsit Take a listen to Merman's version from 1977 (she was 69) here on Youtube!

  • @westbrookwinsit srry but sutton foster does

  • @westbrookwinsit except sutton

  • @westbrookwinsit apparently you havent heared Sutton Foster

  • @chrkeenan I like Sutton Foster, a lot, but she does not have the strength and power the Lupone has. Could see her in so many things....but not in the "belter" roles, better left to, the belters. Again, please don't take offense, as I do like her but I did see Lupone at Lincoln Center at the Vivian Beaumont and I saw Foster a couple of months ago, and Lupone is stronger. Foster was gr8, but Lupone, for me, just gives that extra 'ooomph'. Peace Out!

  • at a school??? patti is one in millions!!! i HIGHLY doubt a school singer has a developed enough voice to outsing patti

  • Molly (the one from my school) was an amazing singer. I could easily be biased of course and I compleltely understand your skepticism.

  • This song has been stuck in my head all day, which makes no sense, I don't own this song, this musical, or anything happing to remind me of it, just came randomly.

  • Great singer, great song, but man, the 80s were weird for clothes/hair.

  • 3:16

  • Patti LuPone along with the power of the immovable hair and the rare golden tin foil, has once again conquered the realm of musical theater

  • @Javaisreve when i read your comment i busted out laughing and couldn't stop that made my day

  • ^^

    my idol...

    right there:)

  • You'll hear it at 2.35 into the song.

  • droghedamalta:

Umm... She said "I heard you blowing on your horn once more."

  • @droghedamalta that's the lyrics... can't argue with the writer, can we?

  • @droghedamalta actually the lyrics are: but when i got to satan's door i heard you blowing on your horn once more so i said satan farewell. (look it up)

  • wow, i didnt realize it til now, but she slurs her words together, alot. it was really difficult to hear wat words she was saying.

    amazing voice though

  • As for this whole Patti stopping the show thing (which is not unheard of, it's probably just not usually as loud lol) I heard Patti nearly tripped (while at very front end of stage), which was the point where she went off. I understand losing her composure, I don't fault Patti for that. And she is fabulous in this clip.

  • One of the best vocal performances of her career!

  • Whoever posed this, Thank You! I saw her singing this in person at the Hollywood Bowl back in the late 80's and had always hope to see it again. She can stop my show any time. Gypsy was Fantastic!

  • And THIS is why she doesn't get in trouble for stopping in the middle of Gypsy.

    It's PATTI LUPONE.

  • i know! everyone is all 'how dare she' and its like, how dare you for contradicting her? she. is. the. jesus. of. broadway. period.

  • Amen.

  • Why, what did she do?

  • she was in the middle of a show and people were taking a bunch of pictures, and she stops the whole show to scream at these people, you can find an audio clip of it on youtube, lol

  • could you please post the link? ;)

  • I think she was justified in stopping the show, but come on, she stopped a whole show because of 3 pictures? That's kind of ridiculous. Someone aptly described it, her character took over because that's something mama rose would do, which just proves she's an awesome actor to be that into a character.

  • Very true =D

  • it is total rule number one that we all learned in theater is that no matter if a person is bad or good on stage you do not talk or take pictures and NEVER use flash if you are about to sneak a pic.

Patti is thee best singer on stage to this date.

  • To each their own.... but i love Patti because i grew up listening to her and just really am a huge fan. I do however like Bernadette Peters just well Patti is again my cup of tea.

  • NO total rule number one is don't break the scene

  • Yes, but i was talking about being in the audience.

  • She's always been amazing, hasn't she? lol.

  • BUTTSLAP AT 2:55!

  • :) loves loves loves

  • shes god amen.
