That crash was all american airlines fault, it had nothing to do with the plane. american airlines were following inproper maintenance schemes, they were just removing the engine instead of removing the engine with the pylon, thats not how they were meant to do the job. they did it the inproper way because it took to long to do it the correct way. AA got fined for this. so get your facts right, it was american airlines fault!
lol, prolly b/c the tires are rolling on the center line, where the lights are, which are similar to the reflectors on the road, when you roll over them, plus their are bumps on the runway, sometimes I think roads are smoother than a runway.
If the crew can not see the runway by that hight they have to do a "go around" they are not allowed by LAW to land if they do not have sight of the runway by that hight which is 200 feet above the ground
i used to fly a dc-10 for ups but then they promoted me to a 747-800, i am happy and a little sad lol :)

@DC10Ben Correct, but I think you have it backwards. They were supposed to leave the pylon on the wing, not remove it.

That is the point at which the pilots have to decide whether they are going to go around, or commit to the landing.
