lol i use this al the time when i get attacked by huge armies. i make a armourded hoplite cirle with no gaps, then mass my archers in the middle who just fire at will the whole time. then put it on 2x speed and watch the destruction :D

Nice video dude, but this superphalanx is quit vurnerable. specially against Persians or roman legions.

To let the enemy surround you is always a very unwise decision. They can just chill and besiege you. Then your fucked, because you are forced to attack or starve.

But in a tactical sphere this formation is quit good.

to much gaps, how come enemy general doesnt use them? + this is easy dude, don't have to do anything but w8 until the enemy is killed, harder if you're also up against some archers (even 1 group could make the difference! they'd just shoot at you with the archers, and when your spearmen would've charged (or if, but then you'd die eventually) they'd just attack ur spearmen from the right &left

If your going to make a formation like this at least make sure you do it properly. There are way to many gaps and I think the easy setting is the only thing which wouldn't exploit these.

2. what do you do in battle if they have archers?

3. them soldiers are normal but yours is upgraded by money (golden all)

if this had been a life or death in their time in reality u would have been owned and wooped like a noob the enemy ai general was most likly on easy or was overconfident so i can belive but in reality u would have had only a slim chance and roman calvary where known to dismount if the enemy was to fortified or phalanx so the game is obviously wrong historicly or the creators messed up so any way that is horrible game for realism

BTW Calvalry wouldn't dismount automatically against a phalanx they would use their mobility to try and attack the rear or flanks

@critic347 Actually depending on the era a formation like that could defend against an assault on that scale.

Because the greeks invented a new spear they did not use the dory anymore. The new spear was longer, heavier, and all around better. Plus the front of the phalax would kneel and anchor their spear into the ground. allowing them to be more stable and more rows of the phalax to deploy.

but there are mods that make the units a bit more historic but still no dismounts

@critic347 I doubt that you understand how much programming would go into making a unit able to dismount at a whim...not to mention that it would make the unit way to versatile in this game...by the way if your looking for realism check out a mod of the game called "Europa Barbaroum". @critic347 If you were faced with Macedonian phalanxes were usually 16 men deep equipped with 18ft long sarissa pikes. I'm quite certain even if the Roman calvary dismounted (which by the way were often outmatched by many other cultures) they would never break a phalanx head on. By the way even the Hoplite phalanx's were extremely powerful and I don't think he would have been "whooped" the Romans would have retreated in the face of a very heavily entrenched enemy.

Not really. Number one, they're Armored Hoplites. They have extra armor and are the second best phalanx unit for the Greek City States. Number two, if they were on higher ground than the Praetorians, even slightly higher ground, they would rape any and all cavalry attackers. Number three, I seriously doubt he would cheat to show off something not quite so amazing but rather cool.

When people insist on doing this kind of formation when playing a online battle it is best to have skirmish and archer units with ammo to just massacre them. That is why I always keep a reserve skirmish or archer unit for just these kind of situations. Then concentrate all your fire on their general, when he's dead or routing, go in with the cavalry, fuck em' up bigtime.

i tried doing this in medieval 2, but i just made the triangle like in 300 when they had 2 stop the cavalry... it worked so well! i made like 10 of the triangles and we went straight through enemy defenses, right into a castle that had like 1,000 soldiers and we killed them all!!! nothing lived dude! and i posted men at each exit of the castle so when they tried 2 retreat, they all just got trapped in and died!!!! haha they even tried using catapults 2 blow up the walls lol

this is probably the lamest thing ever. ive slaughtered tons of those withous loosing many soldiers why? because you cant protect against enemy missile fire or anything like that simply because the backs will always be open. this is the lamest strategy ever and never works if the opponent has brains and archers which opponents always do. if they do you super phalanx will collapse in a few minutes and you will lose. Not to bag on your or anything, but there are a couple things.

First, your noob circle is full of holes

Second, you proved that spearmen own cavalry

Third, against any army that had 1 or 2 units of archers, your formation would be completely broken (just have archers attack phalanx facing backwards, and then there's a huge hole in your circle)

First, thanks. I'd disagree on the value of this formation. The second a single segment breaks there'll be a huge hole which means the rest of your formation is open to flanking, and you don't even have to risk any of your soldiers if you attack w/ long-ranged archers. You also have to wonder how many chevrons they have compared to the cavalry,considering we never see the cards. Also, any general worth his salt would have infantry and never charge cavalry into the front of a hoplite phalanx.

Also, in the event of an identical scenario online with two human players, cavalry still could'a won. All you'd have to do is focus on one segment until they either pushed it far in or obliterated it. Then just pour in so that the hoplites are vulnerable whatever direction they turn. Cavalry = Win.

When the macedonian phalanxes faced roman legions the legionaries were able to get in and amongst the phalanxes and gut them due to the deterioration of macedonias supporting troops such as peltasts which had been used to protect the gaps between phalanxes
