  • Lovely paintings. What type of surface are you using and do you use a limited palette of colors?

  • @dcopley51 thnx.... this one was painted on masonite board, prepared with acrylic gesso. I use a 'full spectrum' palette.....

  • love you!

  • i wish i could paint like that for my art assignment

  • @95Homemade just try ....

  • Nice one my friend.

  • This may be a stupid question, but are you using water colour, acrylic or oils? My quess would be acrylic paint but I'm not sure..

  • @BumbleDumle the only stupid thing is not to ask! It's oil color......

  • any tips you can share on your blending techniques?

  • @yourcauseofdeath think I dont have many blending techniques: just apply the right color in touches, make shure there is enough paint there to cover the surface wel, then work through it with an empty brush. The latter should be such that it allows to move paint around (ie not too soft) and it shouldn't pick up too much paint (ie density of hairs not too large)

  • what are you painting on

  • @robin22391 hi, this one was on tempered masonite panel.....

  • OMG... I was about to eat the screen because i felt a bit peckish but then i realised that it wasn't actually an apple. ; (

  • wauw wat kan jij prachtig schilderen ,op een gegeven moment lijk je wel in de appel te gaan met je penseel zo echt is die appel , echt super je andere video's ook, geweldig

  • hardcore! i can't copy this on my art class!

  • Absolutely beautiful! I love it! I am partial to still life and I like fruit more than anything else because of the color variety (I'm big into color). Your apple is just magnificent, bravo to you! :-)

  • One could grab it out of your painting and eat it, so very realistic it looks. :) And I love all that sounds of the city in the background!

  • so you fix it up like your drawring pencil that is neat.wish it had a stem and leafe too.Makes me see where I have been makeing my wn mistakes thanks.

  • You paint like a pimp gangster!

  • @toyouiwill I missed my calling...

  • @josvanr LOL its never to late to strengthen up your pimp hand... go for it! :)

  • @josvanr That looks like a fucking PHOTOGRAPH.

    Youre amazin man

  • i have just one observation: the base have to stay in the same position like in the start...

but... IT'S AMAZING!! I love this paint

  • Excellent video -makes me both inspired to paint and hungry for an apple :)

  • perfect! oil paint?

  • @InnovationalFilms its 'Old Holland' oil paint...

  • was this painted on board?

  • @r1a7w yes, tempered masonite..

  • Now I have to go out at 10:00 at night in the cold to get apples to eat!!!! Thanks alot!!!

    Wonderful painting!

  • @TheWatercressGirl people with apple-trauma... Paint haters.... or brush fobia people...

  • How can 7 people dislike THIS!?

  • @Crafts4Kids apple haters...

  • OMG,

    AMAZING,

    LIKE X567675675687

  • you made it so realistic... but you forgot that the apple's stem throws a shadow too. :P

  • @Krystinell its a dutch apple... (no shadow from stem)

  • Any tips for a beginner painter who is interested in using watercolor paints?

    In painting landscapes?

    ThANKS

    btw, awesome painting!!!

the best I have ever seen!

  • @Acification95 no watercolors I don't know.... Maybe google for Trevor Chamberlain...

  • @josvanr hehe.. I lost the direction when you started toturn the paper around.. xp Thought it as upside-down at 5:20 :p but nice painting.

  • what is the medium and paper you r using???

  • @jojoptoni09 its masonite board coated with acrylic gesso. Medium was (I believe) equal parts stand oil and liquin...

  • @josvanr you mean oil paints???

  • @jojoptoni09 o yes, in that sense the medium was oil paint. I used liquin and stand oil as painting medium, to change the consistency of the oil paint...

  • You are an amazing artist!!!! I am addicted to watching your videos. Are you painting on canvas in this video?

  • @81cass masonite board...

  • hi, great video. is there a special brush you use to kind of smudge/blend the colours of the apple together?

  • @cocosebola I use a small hous-painter's brush (there is no brand on it). It has long synthetic hair with thickness the same as hog, but its a bit softer. For tapping/smoothing out paint with a dry brush, you need a brush that is not to hard (or you get scratches) but also one that hasn't got too dense hair (otherwise it will lift off too much paint).

  • those are water-colored pencils right?

  • @iReimu nope its oil color...

  • njamiii

  • Minden elismeresem!!!!! Gratulalok!!!!

  • welcome... visit GPABSKY.com website for the ARTIST. ty!

  • Anyone got any instructions for using oil paints? I've never had any formal instruction with them, and I'm just after doing my very first attempt, it was so bad I just stopped half way through and didn't even bother wasting my time. I just find oil paints real awkward and complicated to use =\

  • @MaskoftheWraith hi maskof, keep trying, for me, oil paint is the only medium that gives me the entire range of expression I want (tone, hue, saturation largest range of all mediums i think) Also use good quality paint (old holland/rembrandt etc). Less-pigmented paint is more difficult to get good results. One hint: oil out your canvas/panel before you start....

  • @josvanr

hi jos, so your like wetting the whole board first with oil before painting? just like in watercolors?

  • @bisakol71 you got it right!

  • you should join all you know to do (aples(pears and eggs)and put them in the same painting its looks awesome

  • one pristine apple!!!

  • i want to do that but with pencil. :D

  • @link10041632 nice chanllenge...

  • unfortunately this one's over-rendered, but all round, good effort.

  • Maravilhoso!!!Mas falta dar as cores usadas,risrisris....Beijosss...

  • looks delicious :P''''' ^^

  • Wow. You are awesome, man! I have a question about the cast shadows. What colours do you use? How do you decide what colours to use..?

  • @eruheltgo As for all colors I usually just look and take a guess, paint that, and then compare to the subject, and adjust if necessary. The cast shadow on a white surface is kind of grey. And if you paint that (eg ultramarine + transparent ox red for 'black' + white) you'll see that the shadow in the subject may have a slightly different color. Maybe greener, or bluer, or yellower or whatever.. then I adjust the mixture a bit and try again....

  • im left wid an open wide mouth :)

  • It is AWESOME Jos!

  • klasse Arbeit!

    reinhold

  • bravo :)

  • in 2minutes and 52 seconds i thought he was finished but after that just took the picture into a whole new realm from my perspective ;p im trying to paint an apple atm i just got inspired to continue on.

  • This is really really fantastic! i think the word fantastic is still not enough!! It looked so real and I really thought it was a real apple!!!!

What an awesome painter!!!!! The apple looked so real no matter from what angle you look at it! :D keep uploading! :) I subcribed.

  • wundervoll

  • This is so amazing. I feel like I can reach out and touch that apple. What kind of paints are you using?

  • I am so inspired!

  • hello, it was oils ('old holland' brand)

  • hey nice vid what sort of paints did ya use? xx

  • wow, that looks great! a bit too realistic makes it look a tad unnatural though. maybe try putting some bumpy ends to the apple? good work overall :) the stem looks a wee bit long...

  • OMG!!!!! That is the best painting of an apple I have ever seen

    <33333333

  • Hey Jos!

I watched many of your demonstration, and tell you you have a very sharp eye for vision of light and shadow and the COLOR related to it!!! Bravo!!

  • What a fascinating painting. !!! Great !

  • shurely you don't mean out into the sun!?

  • The apple looks real, but is it a little too real? it is more like a model apple, the computer can do a better job, right?.So how about going out to the market for a walk to fiind out what a real life and the real art is?

  • thank you so much for sharing. I am not sure what it means to subscribe. But I did, anyone help me with what that entails. Do you e-mail me with a painting a day or do you have a dvd. thanks for being out there for inspiration and instruction

  • wow its beatiful :D

what was it you were painting on, a canvas? or just paper?

  • i agree with Danielnoctis

    u overwork..

it was very stylish and appealing in the middle..

    more sargent like..

later it doesnt show of ur skills..

it looks like trying harder to make it as real as it can get..

    anyways its beautiful..

    keep up the good work..

    cheers..

  • you mean the lighting etc? I'll try to include that in the next video..

  • So good! Thanks for sharing your secrets

I would like to see how you set up your subject

    Thanks

  • for about 10 years... Most important advice on realistic painting: paint from life, not photos...

  • that looks great keep it up quick question how long you being painting and any advice to painting real.

  • Nice blending skills,

But you tend to overwork your painting, it was way better midway through.

  • Very nice I like it,good job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow! it looks tri dimensional! what a great realistic apple!

  • Impressive and beautiful work.

  • man that looks like a real apple. like wow.

    i give u props.

is it possible to get that smooth with acrylic?

  • its a large paintbrush from the hardware store (for painting wood etc) used without paint. (ie dry brush.) The hair is a bit softer than hog hair, which is good for smudging large areas of paint.

  • What is that instrument you use in 4:23?

  • Thanks! :)

  • hi, its oil ('old holland') Medium was equal parts liquin and stand oil.....

  • is this oil or acrylic?

  • Oh my god, that was amazing. I'd say it was oil with a flow-style medium.

Perfect shading, and it was very realistic.

  • thats AMZING man...really really good! schools should teach kids how to paint properly, because i wouldnt know were to start with this!

  • perfect painting!!! is that iol paint or acrylics????

  • SOOOOOOOO nice! You are very talented!!! I've only done 2 still life pics and they were mediocre.

  • Do them again!

Don't be mediocre, stand out from the rest!

    It's just matter of practice.

  • Mr. Professional i love the end ressult very realistic although i love it when the apple has all those messy lines, if i were to 'try' and paint that i wouldnt no which way to go, realisitic or messy lol, oo maybe a mix

  • i like apples....

  • thank you for the tips :)

  • belisima ;) great job

  • lol im supposed to draw this in school (:

  • superb....want to pick it and eat it!!

  • it looks so real that when i saw the pic for ur vid i thought that you just took an apple and put it on ur paper!!! :()

  • Great!!!It is gourgeos.Look's so real.Thank you for sharing this.:)

  • hi cafcufcan,

thnx.... btw: its on masonite panel (with white gesso)

  • Very good. You make it look so easy. I feel like going and painting an apple now. So yummy and fantastic on paper!

  • Nice painting, Love the tecnique , i'm inspired i'm going to paint

  • lindo

  • Fabulous. I love it when you make the stem at about 6:30. A real learning experience.

  • no, don't currently have one of those, maybe some time in the future... sorry

  • im a Fine Arts student currently having difficulties with paintings. Do you have any videos or guides that says a step by step process on how to these things properly? It looks so easy when you did it here XD

  • Sounds like you always having a good quiet painting times with the sound of the street at your atelier!!

  • wow that was amazing!

  • Apple plumb hybrid.

  • before I start to paint I cover the panel with some medium (equal parts stand oil and liquin). This facilitates making smooth gradients of color. When the paint is on the panel, I even it out with a dry brush. The brush must have rather stiff hairs (to be able to move around the paint) but the density of hairs must not be too large (so it will not take too much paint off the panel). I found synthetic brushes as used to paint windows and such to be very suitable for this...

  • Also what brushes do you use?

  • yes wet into wet, ie keep painting until it is finished (with no dtrying pauses inbetween). The brushes: robert simmons titanium, a small flat camel hair brush and som larger brushes to soften large areas (don't know the specific brand, but thes are from the hardware store and are a bit softer than hog hair)

  • Is this wet on wet technique?

  • (and I'm just seeing now that I also used a langnickle 5590 nr 2 in the end)

  • yes, painted from life...

  • Were you looking at an apple while doing this?

  • yes, its 'old holland', an oil paint with very high pigment concentraton, ie the opaques are very opaque. Facilitates over painting

  • Is this done with oil paints?

  • p.s. Does he use paint for the shadow or another medium?

  • Edit: Does he use Oil Paint for the shadow or another kind of paint/medium?

  • no, a single medium. I oil out the entire panel with it....

    jos

  • Maybe you could cut in some real time with the time lapse? You get none of the feeling for the way you paint- the gestures tempo and so on in time lapse...

  • I do agree that the apple is amazing, looks like a photograph.

and maybe the video can be uploaded completely, but by uploading the different parts and numbering them "Part 1" "Part 2"...

  • This is wonderful painting but it would be really useful to see some of it in real time so that you could study the technique properly. Lovely apple...

  • hi anyayeatman,

yes, but its ratehr a lot to upload 2 hours of painting....? dont know if this is possible......

  • what a wonderful painting!!! loved watching you work!!!! yours thepaintinglady
