I have had my 17-40L for a year now and love it both on the 7D and full frame film cameras (Élan 7NE). I cannot compare it to the 17-55 but I know it is also a good lens. You won't be disappointed with the 17-40L.
@thfahim Thanks for pointing me out. I must have gotten my comments mixed up. I was talking about Tamron 17 - 50 VC. Should have posted in another review video.
@appacana You dont know anything about lenses. Experts describe the lens as near perfect. You can drop them on the floor and they survive unlike non L lenses that break as soon as they get a bump.
@dipmvideos Yeah, at twice the cost with no weather sealing, barrel extends outwards which leaves the insides prone to dust and grime getting in and it is a crop-sensor lens. The IS is the only advantage of that lens.
tol, i got a Canon 600D with twin kit lens of 18-55mm and 55-200mm IS Lens, and i was planning to buy a new lens for a day-to-day in-outdoor shoots. is this good for my camera body? what can you suggest for a all-around lens.
@RhemStar If you're in outdoor photography, go for the 24-105 f/4 L. It may have f/4 but you're shooting outdoor. (You asked for an all-around lens!) Keep your 55-250.
I will be buying the Canon 7D. I wish to buy a good 'multipurpose/walk around' lens with it. Is this a good choice? and how would it compare with the Ef-s 15-85mm? Image quality wise.
@TheDreamingIris i think it should be better. if youre going to be sticking with the 7d though, the 15-85 might be a better option. watch my video on what i think about the 17-40 on crop dslr cameras!
@dipmvideos You suggest the 15-85 over the 17-40 in terms of image quality or the focal range or anything else? and are there any other good options that I have for an ideal walk around lens apart from these two?
I use the 17-40 on my 50D, so I can actually related.
It works great, when on the crop body it goes to like 24-70mm instead of the 17-40, so it works like the Canon 24-70, but with an f-stop of 4, still a fantastic lens, fit it on a full frame, and you'll really get the 17mm wide angle you probably want from it.
@MadmanDKDK : Hi, Thanks for the very useful information. I am using 60D (APS-C 22.3X14.9) so I couldn't get the 17mm wide with this? Actually I love the 17mm wide, is there any other around to get the 17mm with 60D? Cheers.
As I said - when you got a crop frame sensor, you need to do some math.
Y x 1,6 =
Where Y is your focal length, for example 17 x 1,6 = 27.2mm, 40 x 1,6 = 64mm, because of the crop sensor, and the full frame lens, you'll get the added focal length.
If you want to use the lens fully, you need to upgrade to a 5D Mk. 2, or any other of the Canon Full Frame camera bodies.
Or, you could use the Canon EF-S 10-22mm, the EF-S lenses are made for crop frame bodies.
@MadmanDKDK : Hi Mate, Can you advise me on Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens? I already have Canon 17-40 f4 L & Canon EF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS but I want a lens for portrait shoots. Can you share your thoughts with me on this? Btw I am using Canon 60D. Cheers
The 24-70 is a phenomenal lens, no doubt about it, it is very sharp and very versatile - However taking in consideration that you're using a crop-frame sensor, the 24-70 would become a 38.4-112mm, which is not the greatest. What I would suggest is either a 28mm f/1.8, or a 35mm f/1.8, if you need a bit of zoom range, I would trade the 17-40mm, for a 16-35mm f/2.8 which is a phenomenal portrait lens, on a crop-frame, as it's going to match up with the 24-70mm.
I am entering Fashion Photography, I want to do it for a living and now i'm changing equipment. I am on a low budget and I would like to know opinion on the utilities for this lenses with my future 5D. I used to shot with a 400D and 2 lenses (a canon 18-55 and a sigma 70-300) that need replacement because they have no stability. May I ask for your advice? Thank you so much!
@dipmvideos I have studio lightening but I wont be too far away because the studio is rather small. nevertheless i plan to use some natural light too so I will need a substitute for my sigma 70-300 that has no stabilization and gets me everything blurred and hardly no detail. I need to improve the detail of what the camera gets, i Have bought a 5D for that matter but i need new lenses too... the 50 I will buy.. 24-70.. didn't think of it..
@dipmvideos thanks! also im looking into buying in the future one of the following L-lenses: 24-105, 24-70 or 17-40 and i want to do landscape but also use it as a all purpose type lens of walking around
@dipmvideos Thanks i was also wondering what type of l lens i should get in the future im looking at the 24-70 24-105 and 17-40 but cant decide i want it for a all round purpose lens
Canon L lens bodies are constructed using magnesium alloy which is a mixture of different metals its not quite plastic its not quite metal but nonetheless strong, their lower end lens are pure plastic just thought I would correct you on that.
Why it needs to be metal? There are some very high quality polymers (plastics) used. It's lighter and when it's cold outside your fingers don't freeze onto the lens barrel.
@keldererik I like lenses that are a bit heavy. It's easier to keep them steady. But it doesnt matter if it's Very hard plastic. Btw, this lens would be awesome, actually perfect for me if it had f/2.8.
Amazing they don't make a 17-55 IS "L" lens for full frame guys. We 7D users get the 17-55 IS F/2.8 USM that rules. it's the best lens I have ever used. I have "L" lenses too.
@nate42nd i think its because it would really be hard to make a lens of the focal length for full frame. Its actually the same focal length of a 2-70 on full frame (the 24-70 doesn't have IS though). I agree, its a beast of a lens! thanks for watching!

I have the Canon 15-85mm which is about the same price as this lens. Should I sell it and get this lens instead? Or should I get the Canon 24-105mm instead?
I have the Canon 60D. Please get back to me as soon as possible!
@CYNFELYN23 I shoot landscapes mainly as I live in the countryside. I am no pro though as I just got the 60D and 15-85 last month. I want an L lens for landscape and travel photography. Will this be good for a walk around lens? And will it be good for video? I probs will be getting the Canon 50mm f/1.4 too.
@MVC7CVM the lens barel does not chance in size when zooming. the bokeh is also not too great. i use this lens for lanscapes so i dont really mind. when i do use it for portraits, i do not try to have bokeh. the corners are not that sharp at f4 but get a lot better stopped down. I dont ever feel the need for IS in this lens. its really a nice lens! if you want the extra stop and IS definitely go for the EF-S 17-55 lens.
@dipmvideos I know the barrel does not extend but am I correct that the glass moves INSIDE the lens? why I ask this is because the lens hood would fit any focal range (which can only be obtained by reserve zoom)
Why I don't want to but the 17-55 lens is because its around €950, and when you skip over to full frame you cant use that lens anymore. In other words you can jsut buy a full frame instead with the saved money and save up for a 24L lens.
@MVC7CVM you are correct, it moves. its equally furthest out at the longest and shortest lengths and it is in more in the middle focal lengths. i hope that made sense. its hard for me to explain things properly :P
true. i never liked the idea of buying ef-s glass because i new that i was eventually going to upgrade! although the 17-55 is a realllyyyyyy good lens, its just not an L :P
@dipmvideos Your answer did make sense indeed :D the 17-55 optical quality is considered L for many!
This lens costs around €600 instead of €900 but you do lose alot of focal range and the f/2.8, on the other side you can fit this lens on a FF and than its ultra wide. Would you recommend this lens for wedding photography still?
Do you think Full frames will drop to 75% of the price from where they are now in about 2 years?
@MVC7CVM it would be alright for outdoor wedding photography but i really would not recommend it for anything indoor. in fact, if i was a wedding photographer, i'd stick to using prime. that might just be me though. the price of technology is always dropping. i'm not sure about 75%, but im sure its going ot drop in price.
@dipmvideos Btw i've read somewhere that if you have a lens with f2.8 it may change to f4 if you put that lens on a cropped DSLR instead of a full frame.. i've never heard that before :P is it possible?
@MVC7CVM thats not true, it stays at f2.8. you might have read about bokeh. the bokeh of f2.8 on a crop camera looks similar to the bokeh of f4 on a full frame, considering its the same lens.
@dipmvideos Ow so, the bokeh of the 17-40 f4 on a full frame is the closely the same as an f2.8 on a cropped frame? Is it possible that if you put this 17-40 on a cropped frame you get a bokeh of f5.6? or am I misunderstanding this?
Ow yeah btw, I keep talking in €s al the time, you know the value of a € right? cuz perhaps you're american :P
Thanks, great review, I am picking up this lens today, but I hadn't found any reviews that talked about image quality and soft cornering at it's widest aperture.
@JarquinMedia thanks for watching! it really is a great lens as long as you know what its limitations are and how to get the best results with it! i know you'll have a lot of fun taking photos with this lens!
Wow I just saw this lens for 30$ OMFG HAHAAH! I think the website it was on just fucked up! I will buy it all the way if they don't fix it. When I saw it I was like wow that's a cheap lens!!!
would you rather get a 18-135 or this 17-40l upgrading from the kit lens? please reply!

Cheers :D
