Or it could be: Thad Jones, Mel Lewis (ldr), Jerry Dodgion (f, as), Jerome Richardson (as), Eddie Daniels, Joe Henderson (ts), Pepper Adams (bar), Danny Moore, Al Porcino, Richard Williams, Snooky Young (t), Thad Jones (fh), Eddie Bert, Astley Fennell, Jimmy Knepper (tb), Cliff Heather (btb), Roland Hanna (p), Richard Davis (b), Mel Lewis (d)
Recorded from a European tour in late 1969: Thad Jones, Mel Lewis (ldr), Jerry Dodgion (f, as), Jerome Richardson (as), Eddie Daniels, Joe Henderson (ts), Pepper Adams (bar), Danny Moore, Al Porcino, Marvin Stamm, Snooky Young (t), Thad Jones (fh), Jimmy Knepper, Benny Powell, Julian Priester (tb), Bob Burgess (btb), Roland Hanna (p), Richard Davis (b), Mel Lewis (d)
Looks like JoHen sitting in the left of the sax section. Would love to see a clip from the same time where he gets a chance to blow a bit with the band. Anybody know of anything like that in existence?
I'm so gutted. I had the whole show on video, backed it up onto my harddrive via Canopus digitzer box then the file corrupted after threw video cassette away!! Damn....does Central Pk Nth, Come Sunday, Groove Merchant as well..BTW Al Porcino on trumpet nxt to Snooky
Looks like maybe the Village Vanguard, I used to sit beside the trombone section and listen. There was a single row bench running down the stage left side. What memories! Did you hear the power and depth of the sound? These guys were putting some air throught their horns. And none of it wasted!
That's Roland Hanna on piano, the sax section is Joe Henderson and Eddie Daniels on tenor, Jerome Richardson and Jerry Dodgion on alto, and the unseen but announced Pepper Adams on baritone. The trumpeter next to Mel is the announced Danny Moore, and ejagchas is right, that's Snooky Young on lead. The trombones are (from right to left) Jimmy Knepper, Garnett Brown, Eddie Bert, and Cliff Heather. At the end of this clip you see Richard Davis on bass.
I used to go see these guys every time they played the
Bay Area. They're probably my favorite contemporary big band. If you like these guys you should check out the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band. If you
enter " Sax No End " in the search box you will find a video of them. Let me know what you think.
Probably 1966. This is "Once Around" from the first album. Phenomenal!!! I can't wait for you to put the rest of this gig on here. Thanks. This was a one- of- a -kind band.
I think the name of the composition is "Once Around". It is the opening cut off their first record on Solid State records.
