1:05 The Japanese police were concerned about Boeing reps being on site...but the investigators convinced the police that Boing's expertise was required... so they were allowed "as long as they didn't wander off". . . . . 2:40..Talking about rivets.. the latest on the Titanic is that it was due to rivet failure - hand pounded "slag iron" rivets had to be used at the front where the steel rivet machine wouldn't fit...
5:45 "The Japanese engineer who sanctioned the repair commited suicide"... Boeing didn't "falsify" or "neglect maintainance".did they? thot.. there was an error made in the way the repair was made.& noone was behaving with any criminal intention... in this instance anyway // Pilots, maint., ATC do loose their jobs, receive suspensions and in some countries they do go to jail..
You mean you heard.. Well that's utter bullshit. Boeing repaired the aircraft as stated in this program and made a huge mistake. This repair was not done at a JAL maintenance facility.
you know for sure or are you an expert. this accident was long before i started working at boeing. and it's a fact that one of the boeing mechanics did pressure a boeing engeneer to use one row or rivits. And the engeneer did infact commit suiside.
An expert is someone who has just stopped learning, so always be aware of people who claim to be experts. I honestly think someone was pulling your leg when they said a mechanic would be telling a structural engineer how to complete a repair let alone put pressure on him. If some mechanic started instructing me as how to complete such a project hed be escorted to the door.
does anyone feel bad about the suicide of the mechanic. not me, if i knew i was responsible for 520 lives dying i would have a hard time living with myself too
That's assuming that the mechanic and the mechanic alone was responsible. Except mechanics don't have a say in repair protocol or schedules; the airlines are the ones who make the policies and enforce them.
No airline would say do one row of rivets instead of two, unless the repair said to use one, which it didn't. It was a screw up by the mechanic, not at all on the part of the airline.
That's not the point. The point is, it's the responsibility of the airline to ensure proper repair and maintenance regimes are implemented, and proper training is carried out. I find it interesting how so many people are willing to carry on defending these corporations despite the mountain of evidence demonstrating their wilful disregard for lives.
If the manufacturer of the plane comes out and does the remair it is safe to assume that it was done correctly. Further, form the outside it appeared that there was a double row of rivets securing the panel.
What evidence are you talking about, i could agree with you on other air crash investigation programs say the air new zealand crash but not this one. I buy a plane and it breaks down, either I hire some lousy mechanic or ask the Boeing to send me one, for triple the costs. Thinking no one would know it better than the Boeing guys. They just did that else you can put rivets even in afghanistan its not rocket science. The blame on this occasion is on my fav company, boeing, a giant as well fyi
These companies have only one objective, increasing their bottom line, and if that means getting away with not doing something that's not going to be noticed, they'll risk it. No company can be trusted to enforce safety regulations on its own.
I have to take issue with this - he committed suicide. Is that not enough in these days and times? Do you know how many people would have rationalized it out of their minds so they would be guilt-free and then gone merrily about their lives? But let me say something else: How many times have millions of people (yes even some of us) not done something "to spec" because the knew that it was good enough in their own experience - never dreaming that the worst could happen? Yeah -alot of US.
Anonyms - I agree with you absolutely. Also, it was of course the mechanic who got blamed and blamed himself. The penny pinchers who put mechanics under pressure were not blamed, and probably dont even feel guilty - after all they only did whats best for their pocketbooks.
I agree that company executives should be criminally charged. My father has been a mechanic for 26 years and I am becoming a mechanic right now. No mechanic intentionally wants to falsify records, but pressures from management forces the low end wrench turning mechanics to take shortcuts which risks lives. Im proud to say that even though my father has been pressured by Skybus, Mesaba, and USAirways to shortcut he as low end management refused to allow his guys to do so.
It always amazes to think that if you hit someone with your car and kill them, you could be charged with negligent homicide and go to jail. But you run an airline that keeps poor maintenance records, falsifies records, neglects to maintain aircraft and as a result 400 are killed, you get a fine. There's something really criminal about that.
@MrGrevy: I did check up on that and they are in fact allowed to keep the birds they suck into the engines. The only requirement is that they don't retrieve those birds while the aircraft is in flight - for safety reasons you understand. !!

I know nothing about aircraft. But it sounds to me like a damaged bulkhead shoud not be repaired, but completely replaced.

@celticlofts And if you hit a deer with your car you can keep it, but no one works to help pilots keep the birds they hit and kill.
