i have to say didem and rachel are both really good but cant compare cause there different styles didem is more flexible then rachel and rachel has better isolation and ab control then didem and they both want to be different from other belly dancers
Technique, I wouldn't use that word... Didem dances that way because she knows it's a show, there's a bunch of people watching her on the TV, it's pretty and graceful, but I wouldn't say that she has "technique".
Rachel Brice dances to tribal style, this solo certainly isn't the best drum solo in the world, but certainly she has a better technique than Didem in what she does.
you cannot compare the two - i m not a huge fan of tribal (maybe "in the making" because i start liking it more and more). tribal in drum solos is pure "understatement" - it is by philosophy not a "sell-out" like cabaret performances with shaking all what you ve got in order to appeal to the masses, but mysterious and internal and held-back (voluntarily).
didem does not have much technique (although shes cute and talented), rachel s bellyrolls, backbends, arm movements ARE technique, mesmerizing
i agree you on rachel`s technique but what i mean is that didem on this drum solo outdances rachel, i`m not comparing didem`s style with rachel`s because are diferent.

after spending the last few hours watching both old and new egyptian and turkish dancers i come back to Rachel...i know the other is 'traditional' (although, horribly influenced by modern media, to a negative affect in my opinion) this woman has SO much more technical skill and control than anyone ive watched tonight. i love this woman!

In comparison to other individuals with the same gifts, one of the biggest reasons for Rachel being so noticed, is that she manages to remain 100% graceful and flawless in the arms all the time. Must take so much practice to be able to move and maintain the motions of those arms in a snakelike manner. Being able to keep such a balanced in-rhythm posture at all times requires so much attention & dedication, I think this could be why she is so respected in her field, I could be wrong though.
So if that's all they want to see her for they should suggest she be a pole dancer not a... body dancer or whatever. And they should go SEE pole dancers or try to be professional! Come on.
I hardly remember this pastime of musicians and performers, but I'm guessing it happens a bit more with male musicians and female dancers! No, the musicians are usually caught up in their own tune, focused on their instrument or smiling, either because tune/instrument or crowd. It's different however with band with several different instruments. But what kind of show is it to see the dancer when the creepy musicians are there LOOKING at the dancer?! Think about it.
An artist doesn't have to be staring like a creep at a nude body to appreciate it. It's not a perverted thing, they're too busy about getting the drawing right to even care. Are they audience or are they musicians? Are they professional or do they want to stop and watch? In YOUR opinion they don't have to be creeps, but that doesn't mean they're professional either. Come on what do they care about more their own performance or someone else's?

In oriental dance (even in fusion like this), the drummer MUST look at the dancer. They usually are both improvising, and the harmony between the beats and the dancers movements cant exist if the drummer doesnt see what the dancer is doing..
Does an entire crowd of dancing people need to look at the performers? Have you ever heard of "observing" and recognized perverse staring? There is a difference between that and what you say they're trying to do. Since when did the song dance to the dancer? Sounds like a lot of tune changing, or very similar dance songs altogether cause I don't see her looking at them much. The drummer generally follows the rest of the song so not limited to the drum. Good question how stupid CAN some people be?

you cannot compare the two - i m not a huge fan of tribal (maybe "in the making" because i start liking it more and more). tribal in drum solos is pure "understatement" - it is by philosophy not a "sell-out" like cabaret performances with shaking all what you ve got in order to appeal to the masses, but mysterious and internal and held-back (voluntarily).
didem does not have much technique (although shes cute and talented), rachel s bellyrolls, backbends, arm movements ARE technique, mesmerizing

i agree you on rachel`s technique but what i mean is that didem on this drum solo outdances rachel, i`m not comparing didem`s style with rachel`s because are diferent.

I misunderstood you I think - I ll have to check out Didem s performance. do you maybe have the link? youtube does not allow links on comments so in case you have saved didem s performance and could tell me where to find it it would be sufficient to just copy paste "watch..." from the link.

after spending the last few hours watching both old and new egyptian and turkish dancers i come back to Rachel...i know the other is 'traditional' (although, horribly influenced by modern media, to a negative affect in my opinion) this woman has SO much more technical skill and control than anyone ive watched tonight. i love this woman!

In comparison to other individuals with the same gifts, one of the biggest reasons for Rachel being so noticed, is that she manages to remain 100% graceful and flawless in the arms all the time. Must take so much practice to be able to move and maintain the motions of those arms in a snakelike manner. Being able to keep such a balanced in-rhythm posture at all times requires so much attention & dedication, I think this could be why she is so respected in her field, I could be wrong though.

I hardly remember this pastime of musicians and performers, but I'm guessing it happens a bit more with male musicians and female dancers! No, the musicians are usually caught up in their own tune, focused on their instrument or smiling, either because tune/instrument or crowd. It's different however with band with several different instruments. But what kind of show is it to see the dancer when the creepy musicians are there LOOKING at the dancer?! Think about it.

An artist doesn't have to be staring like a creep at a nude body to appreciate it. It's not a perverted thing, they're too busy about getting the drawing right to even care. Are they audience or are they musicians? Are they professional or do they want to stop and watch? In YOUR opinion they don't have to be creeps, but that doesn't mean they're professional either. Come on what do they care about more their own performance or someone else's?

I don't know why the musicians are so important for you to defend when there is clearly an option of what I'm saying as opposed to your saying it's strictly something else or it's okay despite the fact it's weird and unprofessional. In oriental dance (even in fusion like this), the drummer MUST look at the dancer. They usually are both improvising, and the harmony between the beats and the dancers movements cant exist if the drummer doesnt see what the dancer is doing..

Does an entire crowd of dancing people need to look at the performers? Have you ever heard of "observing" and recognized perverse staring? There is a difference between that and what you say they're trying to do. Since when did the song dance to the dancer? Sounds like a lot of tune changing, or very similar dance songs altogether cause I don't see her looking at them much. The drummer generally follows the rest of the song so not limited to the drum. Good question how stupid CAN some people be?

Everyone who knows oriental dance and its procedures properly, know that the drummer also gets hints from the dancer, and plays as the dancer dance. ==> the song also dance to dancer. And in return, the dancer also dances as the drummer play. Hard to explain to someone like you, who has no idea about this.

You sound pretty rude though, for someone who's just butting in a conversation, well I guess that's already rude by itself. But the drummer's not the only one watching the dancer, is he? I don't know, because you see I've been talking on and on but somewhere I forgot what I was talking about.

i agree..she is beautiful!!but all these ATS bellydancers have no emotion, no play, rarely smile, etc and it is true that thinner gals dont have the ooomph that curved gals do...dont get me wrong.shes got cute lil icolations.But ATS is so boxed in...LOL this is coming from some1 who did belly for 10ys n now prefers Butoh...Thx 4 da upload
