Nope. That's what the armor is for, it really works you know :D . Sure you got some bruises sometimes but it's just a risk like in many other sports. BTW It's not only in Russia like that, almost all of the east Europe "plays" like that :D

It's in Russia close to St.Petersburg Estonia and Finnland. the castle was build by swedish knights and remaind in their hands until it was captured by Peter I. Thats the reason the guys are wearing european clothing and weapons.

No-one has yet died in the UK. In a big pickle like this one - you don't know who is on your side except for your close comrades. You do get trampled. Yes, when it hurts or you are too tired - then you play dead. Injuries are common but it is bloody good fun!!

Someone died a few years ago at Hastings, someone took an axe to the head and well the axe wasn't blunted.

it was a sharp, the guy who did it was banned from fighting before and he wanted to fight, so he just charged on with the nearest weapon.

Also a jouster died a year ago, he took a splinter to the eye from a lance and it pierced a section of his brain and died.

I'll grant that there are likely far fewer arms on the field to memorize in a reenactment today, but even back in the old days there was no guarantee someone from your own side was going to recognize you in the thick of the melee.

I believe it is an honour system. They spend time earning the right to take the field in one of these reenactments, they (are supposed to) learn to fight hard without hurting anyone. When you get hit, you judge how hard you were hit, where you were hit, and what you were hit with. If your arm was hit hard, you might keep fighting without being able to use that arm, if it was your leg, you fall down, if it was your head, you play dead.
