This is so beautifully done, it makes me want to study French again (only had 2 yrs in college). By the way, I thought I saw a video several weeks ago with English subtitles, and now cannot find it. Does anyone know where I might find one?

Je ne veux pas être nostalgique, je sais que la voix est chose fragile et changeante, mais pourquoi Alagna a-t-il voulu d'un répertoire qui l'oblige à s'abîmer, quand il aurait pu être un digne successeur de Vanzo et Kraus? Cette video est comme l'image d'un trésor perdu. Il est beau comme un dieu et il chante pareil. Alors Calaf, Otello, Radames, A QUOI BON?? quand nous perdons Romeo, Nadir, Werther?

Absolutely superb. What does he do to get that top B flat? - Nothing. And I think that is the secret of singing well. Don't make a huge effort to push notes out, just let them out of their own acccord and above all GET OUT OF THEIR WAY.

Thank you so much! I enjoyed this so much that I bought a copy of the entire opera! I love the hearing the French lyrics but seeing the words in English made me love it all the more. Gounod's music and Alagna's voice were made for each other, so heart-breakingly beautiful! What an incredible evening it must have been to actually have been at that performance!

What's your complaint? There is no "waste" because this post does not preclude others of this wonderful tenor.

I think it's great YouTube makes it possible to conveniently hear performers do the same piece so you can compare. I happen to like Jussi Bjoerling's rendition of this piece.
