She has failed to adopt a strong and clear position on the issue of corruption within the present administration. Her party responds to the interests of foreign capital as well as big companies in Costa Rica. Her campaign was by far the most expensive one in the history of Costa Rica. It's sad to think that she has come to power on behalf of the same patriarchal system of corruption, conservatism and represents the interests of men mostly, excluding the poor, weak and traditionally rejected.
Costa Rica has had female candidates for a few elections now, which is great; however, I think Costaricans voted for Chinchilla precisely because she is a woman, not because of her ideas. Her party is one of the most corrupt. Her candidacy was possible not because of herself, but because of men that used her for their own interests. Voting just based on gender is real 'machismo' or 'sexismo'. Nicaragua was the 1st with a fem. presid., and this is one of the most 'machista' countries in America.
It is still progress for a woman to hold the position. Regardless of how she got there, her being there will forever change the perception (especially in little girls' minds) of what women can accomplish.
