Especially when Shoguns kicks were much more damaging than Machida's counter punches, that became less frequent, and weaker as the fight progressed. If Machida's counters were so damaging, why did Shogun continue to press the action all five rounds? If there had been a sixth round, Machida would have been KO'ed.

I was mistaken, on the 82 to 42 strikes landed. According to Compustrike it was 89 to 50, with Shogun landing more strikes in every round. Also the number of arm strikes was identical for both fighters.

When both fighters are engaged in a striking match, what I always look for is the fighter who is being judicious, picking his spots, being accurate and landing the cleaner strikes, which, ultimately, is what Lyoto did more effectively than Rua. Lyoto made Shogun come after him
Although Rua threw a lot of low kicks, they were not as damaging as Lyoto's diverse attack in the earlier rounds, which is why I scored the first three rounds for Machida. You have to keep in mind we always favor the fighter who is trying to finish the fight. And leg kicks certainly don't do that. :-)
part 2 Lyoto was landing the more cleaner and damaging strikes throughout the fight - if you take a look at the judging criteria, clean strikes are valued more so than the quantity of strikes landed

because he looked much more damaged than he was bcuz where the damage was. when somebody gets leg kicked all fight it's easy to see their damage by the way they walk, if they're hit in the head & body all fight it's not as noticeable bcuz it's not affecting their movement unless they're really rocked which isn't always the case bcuz fighter's recover. plus Machida only had real trouble walking in the 4th & 5th round. Machida won the first 3 rounds, end of story. this is the ufc, it's by rounds

Shouldn't Shogun have won some if not all of the rounds that he landed more strikes in? I don't see how landing more strikes equates to losing in three of five rounds. Especially when Shoguns kicks were much more damaging than Machida's counter punches, that became less frequent, and weaker as the fight progressed. If Machida's counters were so damaging, why did Shogun continue to press the action all five rounds? If there had been a sixth round, Machida would have been KO'ed.

well everytime they exchanged in the first few rounds, Machida landed a few strikes at a time while Shogun kicked him once as a counter. it happened a few times plus when Shogun tried to take him down, Machida got points each time for effective grappling, failed takedowns don't count for anything. those stats are complete horse shit besides. I own the fight so I'm not doing this from memory. shogun could've knocked him out in the 5th but he didn't. we'll see what happens in the rematch lol

Shogun was the one pressing the action 90% of the fight. He was not countering with his kicks, because to counter, you have be fighting defensively.
Failed takedowns are not scored, but standing against the fence not being taken down, isn't worth points either.
I was mistaken, on the 82 to 42 strikes landed. According to Compustrike it was 89 to 50, with Shogun landing more strikes in every round. Also the number of arm strikes was identical for both fighters.
