okay. i lived in the area my whole life. born there. raised there. i mustve gone over that bridge literally over 200 times. i know tourists love filming everything but what the hell compelled you to film the whitestone bridge?
@IWantDaveKast I was born in NY but grew up in western MA. Had family, and still do, that live in NY area and so growing up we would visit 5-6 times a year, as well as Mets games, and we would always go over the bridge. To me as a kid knew we were close when we got to the Whitestone.
It is my favorite piece of Schubert. I love it. Thanks.
Don't know much about the bridge outside I have driven over it over the years. I do know at the time when I filmed this they were doing some work on it.
I, too, noticed in more recent videos of Bronx-Whitestone (I haven't been across it since spring of 2001) that the stiffening trusses on either side of the roadway have been removed. They were added in 1940 shortly after the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse & were considered by many to be a blemish on the span's formerly graceful appearance. When were the trusses removed?
BTW, nice choice on Schubert's Impromptu in G-flat Major, Op. 90, No. 3. It's my favorite of Schubert's solo piano pieces.
I read that the trusses were removed in late 2003. They removed them becuase they found out that they were excellerating wear and tear on the bridge and straining the cables because of the weight. So they removed them and replaced them with lightweight aerodynamic fairrings to exstend the bridges life span. Due to the trusses removed the bridge has lost about 6,000 tons.
Too bad becuase I liked the way it looked when it had the trusses. The bridge is just too plain looking without them.
