  • @jmulma Stop This Train

  • my favorite song right now:)

  • I've started to learn how to play the guitar 2 years ago. I've started it on a late age, im 23. But even with this obstacle I want to be a musician. It would be good to play to for millions of people and be recognized as a good artist all over the world. But deep inside i know that i would be completely happy just by playing guitar in a local band and teaching some kids the basic chords. And John Mayer makes me feel like i can do both. So thanks John.

  • @KaiMelo Bro (or bro-ette ... not sure of your gender haha) it's never too late to start. Honestly.

Music is all about feeling... and that's something anyone, of any age, can convey through song.

    =-)

  • @KaiMelo i guess its never too late...i started when i was 27... im 32 now... i dont know if I am good or not but i believe I can get to be as good as i want as long as i work hard... so i guess you can do the same and you are younger..so keep it up

  • @KaiMelo ik exactly what youre talking about except im a junior in high school so i still have time but best of luck to you and your goals i hope to be listening to you one day

  • @KaiMelo Feel the same way, I'm 22 atm, just started at the teachers education, and I play like 2 gigs a month in front of like 60 people, and jam with my band 2 days a week. It's good enough for me =)

  • A part of me wishes I was a music major, but the bigger part of me tells me that no matter how much schooling and money I go through, making it big is all about:

1: Being talented and unique in that way

    2: Knowing the right people

I've been playing guitar for a while, I can hold up my end easily while soloing over progressions, my voice is decent and is getting better, but with an idol like John Mayer, it makes me feel like I'll always just try to catch up to his footsteps.

  • @FallenQuiet the biggest mistake you can make as a musician is trying to equate yourself to someone else. You're not John Mayer, and lets face it, you most likely arent going to be. so whats the point of spending your whole career trying to be him, or be at his level.

  • @FallenQuiet As he said earlier. if you measure success by the number of albums you sold vs the number of albums John mayer has sold, you're gonna feel pretty lame. But if you measure it by saying, hey, at the end of the day, im doing my own thing, and people are digging it even though it doesnt say "grammy award winner" you'll be a successful musician by your own definition, not someone else's. And isnt that what its really about? Being able to look yourself in the mirror and say "i'm happy"?

  • @CoandCaSSTB Well said :)

  • @FallenQuiet I dont want to encourage you to do something that you arent comfortable doing, or even something that you "hate". But trust me when i say the best piece of advice John gives in this clinic is to Be honest about what you want. And the best piece of advice I can give you is to learn to ignore those voices in your head telling you that you arent good enough, or that you wont be successful just because you cant play like John Mayer. Because thats simply not true in the slightest.

  • @CoandCaSSTB That is the 100% gospel truth. There are a lot of VERY influential musicians that were not masters of their instruments. One example would be The Germs. They didn't know the first thing about playing an instrument at their first gig. Soon they became the most influential punk band that ever touched L.A. One of their members, Pat Smear, went on to play in Nirvana and the Foo-Fighters.

    It's all about drive @FallenQuiet

  • He's so funny. He didn't want to be labeled "sensitive" with the Daughters song and writes this song which so incredibly sensitive. Cracks me up. Oh Johnny, I don't think one can help being sensitive. It's really a beautiful thing to be yet difficult at the same time, in my oh so humble opinion. ps. Great lecture. So well spoken, concise, candid...excellent! I also feel much of this information can apply to life in general, as in "define your expectations"!!!!

  • I think part 2 and part 3 are switched

  • awesome

  • yes
