My gosh...this was posted a year and a half ago...how did I miss it??? A better question is why did Motown sit on this classic for so long before releasing it? I knew Stevie was just 19 when the song was released, but I had no idea that they waited almost 2 yrs. He was only 17 when the seeds of it were planted! Thank you SO much for this post...the Funk Brothers were the absolute backbone of Motown Records and never got the credit they truly deserve.
I'm not at all surprised Motown had this in the can for two years before issuing it. One of Motown's biggest problems (a fortunate problem at that) was that they had too much material to choose from. Some of the best material the label produced ended up delegated as b-sides, album cuts, a-sides that weren't pushed or even unreleased. The deeper you delve into the wealth of Motown recordings the more amazed you'll become.
Man...so many things came out during that time...I honestly wish that music came out this time...makes me jealous because nothing's being produced this generation that I can honestly say is good. Just stuff to dance to, but nothing...memorable like this...not legendary. This music was really the stuff of Real Life Legends...
...are you a 'secret' ambassador for the funk brothers? if so , in my opinion your the best one they've got! great post s/w! (your posts are so clear, sound wise) thank you!
Beautiful

A lot people forget that the Detroit symphony orchestra played on a lot of Motown songs with the strings.
