I rode on the beach in Washington State... I only had my horse for about 2 weeks and he was as green as they come. We had to ride right through town... Sunny did great... and on the beach... he did great... took a little coaxing to get him in the water as well... I didn't have a crop... but if I did, I would have used it. It's just the horses fear of the unknown... and if you don't MAKE them go in... they'll know they can get away with refusing you. You did a great job.

Why are people giving so much hastle about the whip? It's not illegal to use it, and every rider has used on once in their life, so stop fretting about it. They're competitive riders, they know what they're doing and the horse has to concer the fear and by the end he was fine. If they were doing wrong, then the trainer would tell them that they are. So just stop acting as if you know the people and just comment nicely.

Really nice video of horse/ rider Have to live vicariously through their experience -being a fortunate survivor of a drunk hitting my bike Remembering the feeling of near instantaneous acceleration- akin to a motorcycle & the smell (yes the smell lol ) & sounds they make.Self taught -am sure i made mistakes so use of the crop is not an area can judge credibly.if there is one thing i noticed at the end one rider allowed too much slack as a result her mount had a salty mouthful am sure.

@99woofer1 According to the notes in the video, these girls are eventing riders, which means their horses need to be able to splash in and out of ponds, lakes, and water jumps (I forget the technical term). This is probably one of the best schooling methods there is, because if they're exposed to water at its biggest & most violent, it's probably not as big a deal for smaller, still water.
U guys are so brave to do that and it seems A LOT of fun and guys if she didnt hit the horse with the crop her horse might of run off and she was only keeping her horse under control so leave her alone

Not to start any arguments, but if a horse can feel the fly landing on his rear, wouldn't you think he could also feel the slap of a crop very well?
I mean, I'm not saying what she did was wrong, she was probably just trying to keep the horse under control. But it is true horses have very sensitive skin.
OK, they can feel it, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt them. She looked pretty harmless to that big horse. If that horse was really hurt by her, it would express it.
I agree, I believe most horses can feel a crop just as well as a human. I'm not against crops or anything, but I don't think she should have reprimanded the horse just for being scared. It looked like the horses were afraid of the waves and he needed reassurance instead of a swat on the rear. All three of them are good riders, though. They're pretty brave to go without saddles.
@stevwall I dunno, I'm an experienced rider, and while I don't object to her use of the crop, I object to the way she used it (on the side closer to the "object" he's shying away from, while the horse is still shying away and not facing the water). It seems incredibly counter-productive. Though obviously the horse was fine by the end.

Yes I just saw that too and went right off this right after that - if an animal, or person is frightened you don't SMACK them/punish them - you are gentle ( firm when needed but not physically so ) to help give them the confidence and trust in you to get over the fear - :( Very disturbing to see that !

I give my horse a "slap" to remind her i want her to canter. She is afraid of this corner. Sometimes she gets confused. I tap her on her back to remind and all of a sudden she takes off and goes " oh okay i get it now!" it is much happier then her staying confused and just kicking her. Seriously get a life :)

we had the same problem with our horses, it took us almost two days before they where completely willing to go in. It just takes time and trust. I agree, you can't force a horse to do anything, especially these girls. You can tell they took time and had the knowledge and patience to pull this off. The horses are obviously well trained and willing to learn. I had so much fun when we took our horses to the beach! once they got it, they loved it! We even tried swimming a little. Great job girls!

ive been wanting to do this with my horse for a while now. and i am considering going to Mickler's landing Beach Park. does anyone know if there is anything that i need to know before i go there? like do i need to get permits or anything like that?
The horses and the girls did great, from what I see. The narration says they spent three hours there, so they probably took their time getting in the water. I can tell this at Mickler's Landing in Ponte Vedra, FL. You have to have a pass to ride there, effective May 1, 2008. You can also ride at Nassau Sound, near Talbot and Amelia Islands. That's a beautiful place. Only a limited amount of horses are allowed on the beach at a time, however.

several groups of people had trailered their horses to Michlers landing that day. I highly recomend going there. I really don't know any other place like it.
Mickler's landing Beach Park just north of Saint Augustine is animal frendly. We boarded the horses about 10 miles away on 208, west of Bakersville. That is where I shot the pond riding video

wtf how would u no u dnt no her abiity she could be a beginner and im shaw u dnt ride perfect every single time you ride and it might be there first time at the beach welll the horses and thye may be nervous i know my horse acted like that the first time so dnt be too quick to judge

if i was there on that beach at the same time those girls where. i would of started to tear up...why,because i would be gettin taunted by the fact that those girls have those beautiful horses,and i dont. and better yet,they are on the beach with those beautiful horses. and i will be stuck dreaming....you girls are really lucky

Yes I just saw that too and went right off this right after that - if an animal, or person is frightened you don't SMACK them/punish them - you are gentle ( firm when needed but not physically so ) to help give them the confidence and trust in you to get over the fear - :( Very disturbing to see that !

@cvfa Wow if you honestly think that is abusive you are blind. You have NO idea who that girl is or her horse. Every horse is different. Maybe he responds better to a crop you don't know! I give my horse a "slap" to remind her i want her to canter. She is afraid of this corner. Sometimes she gets confused. I tap her on her back to remind and all of a sudden she takes off and goes " oh okay i get it now!" it is much happier then her staying confused and just kicking her. Seriously get a life :)

i did that one time in Mexico on this courter horse named Treb'e and i was only walking cos it is western and at homw i ride english and that was my first time western and it was awesome the water was great went in with Treb'e and i rode him bearback! FUN! thumbs up for this video

that looks so cool! i went riding on the beach on tuesday and we did galloping across the sands and went into the sea to about the depth of the horses shoulders but it was in wales so it was quite cold and windy but a least it was sunny lol. i would love to do that in florida!

Obviously the horses were not familar with the sea. Under that condition it is excellent riding, what those girls perform:
all of them must be very experienced rider with a very safe seat and perfect balancing on horse back!
Congratualtion for such great riding!
By the way, did any one slip off or could they all stay on all throughout?

we had the same problem with our horses, it took us almost two days before they where completely willing to go in. It just takes time and trust. I agree, you can't force a horse to do anything, especially these girls. You can tell they took time and had the knowledge and patience to pull this off. The horses are obviously well trained and willing to learn. I had so much fun when we took our horses to the beach! once they got it, they loved it! We even tried swimming a little. Great job girls!

me and my family alway go to the beach for a week and ride for the american heart association and i LOVE IT. its so much fun, my horse always moves with the waves, its really funny. great video

ive been wanting to do this with my horse for a while now. and i am considering going to Mickler's landing Beach Park. does anyone know if there is anything that i need to know before i go there? like do i need to get permits or anything like that?

The horses and the girls did great, from what I see. The narration says they spent three hours there, so they probably took their time getting in the water. I can tell this at Mickler's Landing in Ponte Vedra, FL. You have to have a pass to ride there, effective May 1, 2008. You can also ride at Nassau Sound, near Talbot and Amelia Islands. That's a beautiful place. Only a limited amount of horses are allowed on the beach at a time, however.

Ur a retard if you think a 120lb. person can FORCE a 1200lb. horse into the water by pulling on the reigns...the horses only go because they trust their riders.

which ever way you are trying to get your horse in the water
forcefully or other ways.......

i am trying to figure out what beaches in florida allow you to bring your own horses on them? i take it that is what you guys did? so im assuming you can bring your own on michlers landing? is that true? and do you know of any others or how to find out? ... thank you

several groups of people had trailered their horses to Michlers landing that day. I highly recomend going there. I really don't know any other place like it.

Mickler's landing Beach Park just north of Saint Augustine is animal frendly. We boarded the horses about 10 miles away on 208, west of Bakersville. That is where I shot the pond riding video
