anybody notice that Allen re-used costumes, sets, machines on various episodes? it kind of gave the series a cheap look (but not distractingly so--the other elements made it worth while) the man really knew how to save a nickel!!!
This is the first film that """impressed"""" me as a child.. We used to have at home 6-7 TV sets, one of them, a balck and white Tem 2 [?] hardly "working"...
The same that allowed us to see the Ist landing on the Moon. I was 7 times less than I'll be this year. Like yesterday....?
Due to budget cuts, they needed to color tint B&W footage from year 1's "The Derelict" and reuse it for this. I don't agree with marcparella that year 3 was worst; I think it was better than year 2, which had a lot of near-unwatchable shows. Recall the silly "Thor" episode, the female dragon chased by Hans Conreid, the thief of Bagdad like alien, the circus troupe one & the awful spoof of Mutiny On The Bounty-"Mr. Kidnow, who stole my goat cheese?" The 3rd year didn't have such horrid clunkers!
I have IDAK's autograph; he is the great Don Matheson, aka Mark from "Land Of The Giants." I met him at one East Coast Chiller Theatre con' about 4 years back and he was totally laughing himself sick with my memories of IDAK, as well as his stories about the character when he played the role!
He nearly died from laughter when I told him his costume looked like someone mugged Superman too. He was one nice person to talk to. Fun times!
@marcparella No kiddin' man! Season Three was by far the worst, but occasionally had some seriously decent episodes. Once coming to mind was "Visit To A Hostile Planet" and another from Season Three (I think) was "The Phantom Family." Then there was "The Anti-Matter Man" and "Condemned Of Space." Season Three also had more flight time for the Jupiter 2.
One of my fave LIS is the one where the lizard man and the golden man are set to wage war against each other. Penny ends up befriending the 'hostile' lizard man.
IDAK was stupid, but as a kid I liked it.
Even as a kid, I still preferred the less campy B&W episodes.
@supermanfan62... that's a question I've asked myself since I watched the show as a kid. Even back then, I knew that the size of the ship in exterior shots wasn't consistent with the scenes shot inside of the ship. Nonetheless, it was a good one season show. After season 1, Dr. Smith took over, and the show became more and more annoying with each new episode.
0:12 - wow! look at how tight Penny's spacesuit is, compared to Judy's or Mom's. From what I understand, Angela Cartwright really "filled out nicely" between seasons 2 & 3, and the suit was still her season-2 size. Woof!!
Season one was the best. LIS started out as a true sci-fi show, but by season 2 it became little more than a very bad sitcom set in space. Another example of how they always seem to ruin a really good show.
Season One was hardcore survival horror, and the season ender, "Follow The Leader" was absolutely chilling.
Then there was "Invaders From The Fifth Dimension" and the superb "War Of The Robots", and then we had the Cyclops from "There Were Giants On The Earth."
Season 2 and 3 saw more space travel, and there was an excellent episode in Season Three called "Visit To A Hostile Planet" where they land on Earth in the year 1947.
which episode is it where Dr. Smith finds a device that grants his every wish, and when he conjures up a servant, it is a horror that wants the device back? That was outstanding, terrifying sci fi.
Yep, they find the machine in the wreck of an old alien spaceship, and after Smith becomes too greedy (as do the Robinsons) the owner of the machine comes back to claim it as noone can play nice with it.
VERY good episode. The alien even leaves Will a small present after he takes the machine back, as he senses the good in his heart. Season One rocked!
I couldn't agree more. The first season was excellent science fiction. Too bad this series finished the way it did. But crew, cast and producers can be proud of the first season for sure.
@MrEvan8689 No you don't get it. It was Alice in Wonderland in Space and the campy episodes were also in Season One. Come on.. the Space Croppers, the Keeper, Our Majesty Smith. All first season episodes and all wonderfully campy. LIS was pure fun.
@marcparella Thank you for the comment. It's nice to see people can have civil conversations on here. Don't get me wrong, LIS has always been one of my favorites. But as a Sci-Fi writer myself I often wondered if they'd kept LIS more Sci-Fi than campy fantasy, would it have possibly rivaled the success of Star Trek? (My all-time Sci-Fi favorite) We'll never know, but I still do watch LIS on DVD from time to time. Like you said, "It's pure fun!
@MrEvan8689 I'm not sure.....I personally don't think Season 1 is all that interesting.....its black and white for one thing and to me the show being so serious doesn't seem to have any real charm......I think the campy approach suited the show.....
@MrEvan8689: You don't get it. Lost in Space was wonderful. It was Alice in Wonderland in Space. Bizarre interesting creatures and a show that didn't take itself too seriously.
@marcparella Yes, LIS was at times wonderful. But my favorite episodes were those that were more sci-fi than fantasy. Esp. season one. There were many good episodes in seasons 2 & 3 as well. All I'm saying is that I think the true sci-fi story-lines were examples of how great LIS could be. Even the actors complained about the silly fantasy episodes. It's all very well documented. Mark Goddard was most vocal about it.
@MrEvan8689: What you are saying is true. But the show was never marketed to an adult audience. The reason I think it has lasted so long was the fact that the Dr. Smith character was so unique for the times. A complicated mixture of villain and anti-hero. Sure the show could have stood some better plot developments. But all of Irwin Allen's TV shows suffered from weak writing. The joy of watching is not expecting to see Battlestar Galatica but rather Alice in Wonderland.
@MrEvan8689 ---i heard that the TV network wanted Lost In Space to be as campy as Batman on one of the competing stations. Sadly they went all out to be campy as Batman...not just a tiny bit......In this show, they should have let Dr Smith stay as a little kid.
@Wellch I can't recall WHICH network You refered to, But I heard an old audio tape of Gene Roddenbury talking at a Star Trek convention in the 70s. He spoke of how he went to the above mentioned network(before showing it to NBC) & tried to get them to take on Star Trek. The told him, 'Well, We already HAVe a Sci-fi TV show...It's called Lost in Space." The audience exploded with laughter. Later, NBC was almost as bad; "We like your concept...but get rid of the guy with the EARS..."
@MrEvan8689: You don't get it: LIS was not campy, it was absurd, deliciously absurd. It was Alice in Wonderful in Space. And this episode is why we still love it after 45 years.
The only bad thing about season three was Guy Williams was getting fed up with the campy scripts and Dr Smith, Will and The Robot getting all the good scenes.
I think he described the show as "getting a terminal case of the cutesies".
That's too bad. I always liked the character of Prof Robinson and Dr Smith always made me ill.
Oh! The pain, the pain.

Agreed--Smith and The Robot had way too much time later on in the show, and Guy WIlliams was losing ground as the leader of the Robinson family.
Another bad thing about season 3, was the costumes and the plots were way too off base, and too corny. It became less and less serious about sci-fi.
However, some good examples
came thru- "Visit To A Hostile Planet", "Condemned Of Space", "Hunter's Moon" and the "Haunted Lighthouse" episode with J 5 played by Lew Gallo.

Sothe1424 2 years ago
Yup, season 3.
The Robinsons had to fix the "leader" of a race of aliens who could control time.
It was a giant clock-like creature. The best thing about LIS season 3 was that they got more time in space than the previous 2 seasons.
