  • 34 years old and a big boy now but I always cry when I see this...

  • Never fails. I'm bawling like a baby yet again. Every freaking year.

  • I have to admit, I got teary eyed when Joseph was introduced.

  • What a twist!

  • What a beautiful short film, even to me, an atheist.

  • No were in the bible does it say that animals don't do to heaven. It does say that Jesus will ride on a white stallion

  • The King of kings humbled himself to the point that He depended on one of the most abused creatures in all of history before he was even born! Don't tell me animals don't go to heaven!

  • HUZZAH!!!!

  • OMG!

  • LOL

  • Long Live Jesus Christ!!!!

  • Is that it? I thought there would be more. Still had me blubbing though.

  • @djbethell Not Me

  • if that donkey could not make a short trip with sticks, how's he gonna do it with a pregnant woman all the way to Bethlehem? lol. Miracles.

  • @SNGarza FTW

  • The Small One is perhaps the last Disney film with a musical score in the classic style. The new "Disney" features have a pacing quite different, and the songs have mediocre melodies that can be sung only by trained singers. Today's "Disney" seems to be doing what it can to forget its heritage and forget who Walt Disney really was.

  • @thomasjefferson6

Wow! Well said Thomas. I too loved the older disney with the silly songs anyone could sing. Todays Disney has wayyyy to many songs and many are like you said, mediocre melodies that can be sung only by trained singers. Todays Disney are very predicatabIe. I cannot ever remember the last disney movie I seen at a theatre. Loved this short movie. I too thought it was going to be bummer. But still today , 1 of my all time favorites. Skyler

  • love this movie short really good

  • That really tugs at the heartstrings. I teared up and I usually never tear up for movies.

  • :'/ happy and sad at the same time

  • @samuriguy909 Like most Bluth Movies

  • @mrdropkicker1 Me 2

  • PRE-MICHAEL EISNER TAKE-OVER

This was when Walt & Roy Disney were still running Disney

Good luck for Disney making anything

    about Christmas

    and "evil Christians"

    now

  • @savagegalt They'll just make something about "the Holidays"

    Totally different

  • @mrdropkicker1 Why?

  • the ending made me cry i love this move

  • This story was one of my first that I learned to read and I had a vinyll record with the picture art and words. I was like 3 years old...I remember it always like it was yester day and mention this movie to others and people never knew what I was talking about....I'm an only child now 32, but I actually for a long time thought imagined this movie and that specific moment in my life...thanks for posting and now I'm not crazy.

  • there's a place for each small one - god planned it that way

    great message there :)

i'm not a hard chore christian but still; it's sweet :3

    and so full of hope

  • @goldberry1990 Yes, too bad the rest of the song sucks

  • @donkeylongears No, It's Not!

  • @goldberry1990 And that my friend should be what everyone feels.

  • how precious! :'D

  • It's too bad I never saw this as a kid but it's never to late ^^

    Such a lovely short ;w;

  • @Matetrix89 yeah lol same here

  • @Matetrix89

It is "to" late for you, my friend.

  • ... Yup, ten years later and this thing still makes my sob hysterically.

  • The boy looks like Moogly from jungle book

  • @ArtemisMoonshine22

    I always thought that too.

  • Dammit I didn't think I'd ever cry again watching this. So beautiful and so underrated it's criminal!!

  • it was a nice story...but half an hour of a kid trying to seel a donkey...realy? XP

  • This wasn't a full length animated feature. Was it?

  • I think I just saw a recycled animation of Mowgli at the start there! XD! Kicking his foot and throwing that stick~

  • This is the most beautiful Christmas special in the history of Christmas.

  • Yeah. Betcha didn't see that one coming! M. Night Shamalan would be proud.

  • I never saw this as a child though I do know the story because my mother let me listen to Bing Crosby's narration of it when I was a kid and loved it, though I think as a kid I only heard it once or twice till I was older and in my teens which, even then was, once again, once or twice till now, as an adult, for the past several years, our talk back plays Bing's version of it once every christmas in the morning which I love listening to every year.

Thank you for uploading this. <33

  • Thanks for posting. I have not seen this since I was a kid at the theater back in '78 or so. It was coupled with Pinocchio I think. I remember the tannery scene scaring me. But I still remember being happy for both the boy and Small One at the end.....

  • Brought tears to my eyes, too. One of my favorites....havent seen it since my kids were little....thanks for posting it. :)

  • My favorite part of this movie is how sweet and gentle Joseph is. ;__; You just know that he is going to take such wonderful care of Small One, and maybe Small One will even get to live with Jesus for a few years. ;__; A little donkey couldn't possibly feel more loved than that.

  • @Serena2009ification That is a very sweet sentiment. You must be a kind person!

  • @doobiesmoke15

Aww, thanks. You're making me blush. :P That was a sweet thing for you to say, too. Thank you.

  • *sniffles*

This one always makes me cry, especially at the theme song and the very precious ending. It's seriously my favorite Christmas special;----I literally watch it a few times a year during the Christmas season; and I have for most of my life.

  • beautiful cartoon. wish they still made em like this!

  • I see why this is a Christmas special. Because the story happened a few hours before Jesus was born.

  • @Farfeb More like a few days, really. The trip was around 40 miles.

  • I remember having my mom read this story to me every Christmas and she would always cry. Now, I'm getting a little teary-eyed watching this. Such an amazing film.

  • Im a secular,non-practicing person,and I have to say this short made me teary-eye.

  • dude....thank you

  • That was SO sad!!!! *sniff sniff* I love this kind of animation way better than the kind they have now. :)

  • totally didnt realise this was a christmas film!

  • totally didnt realise this was a christmas film1

  • i cried at the beginning. and than at the end when Joseph came. this is such a classic... not many movies, especially cartoons... can make me cry. this one got out the waterworks from me.

  • I had a sexy cry. I never herd of or watched this specail as a kid, but now looking back on it, I really kinda want too.

Wish I invented a time machine.

I know I didn't, because if I have, I would come back in this point in time to tell myself I did.

  • i have never heard of this movie, but its great, i love old disney movies

  • Oh my word - this made me CRY!!! The ending always breaks my heart and makes me glad all at the same time!!! They certainly do not make Chrostmas shows like this one anymore...this is one of the most heartfelt, and beauitful tales ever!!!

    Goodbye, Small One...I love you!!!

  • Goodbye small one.

  • i like it when he throw the stick just like mowgli did. Oh heck yeah i FREAKIN love mowgli A LOT!!!!!

  • you guys are SO JERKY FREAK!! teasing the boy like that and small one too!!

  • I always loved this short, one of Don Bluth's best. Thanks for putting it up.

  • This was my first time watching this film, Im glad I did. Don Bluths animation always stands out as an artistic acomplishment. That ending, even though I didnt cry, my eyes definetly wernt dry afterwards. What a wonderful film.

  • I'm thirty-five. I was three when this came out. I had the audio recording of it on vinyl. And to this day I still cry whenever I watch it. From the moment the movie starts till the moment the movie ends my eyes and my face are never dry. Thank you for bringing back such wonderful childhood memories.

  • I had almost forgotten this movie, thank you so much for bringing back my childhood memories. A donkey more than fit to be in the King of Kings stable

  • @Celestiel I think Nestor is more worthy though ;)

  • @donkeylongears Not for me, as a child I saw this one first...this one will always come first for me, Nester is close behind though.

  • I love this film... So beautifully written and created... Every Christmas it used to be on TV and every year I would watch it... So great to be able to see it again... A true testimony of Disney's work

  • 0:25-0:48- is from the Jungle Book. If you don't believe me, watch the part of the Jungle Book right before Baloo finds Mogli. lol I love finding bits of re-used animation in disney films.

  • @pima262 I noticed that too lol

  • I guess the boy was right about Small One getting his stregnth back.

  • And he was "good enough to be in a King's stable!" (Part 2 8:25) :D

  • I still love this. For some reason I didn't think it was a Disney cartoon. Ah well, it's still great.

  • sto piangendo , i'm crying

  • aaaah... Don Bluth, magic :3

  • Thank you so much for puting this up. I used to watch this a lot when I was a kid. I have such fond memories from this movie. Thank you again!

  • sigh, such a wonderful memory from my childhood. I'm sure my parents still have it on VHS at home somewhere. so many years since I've watched it and it's still so heart warming. Thanks!

  • This part of the film always gets to me. I'm not ashamed to shed tears during the ending.

  • When I was little, this hit me right in the heart -- and I didn't even realize Small One was leading the boy back to the tanner. Incredible cartoon.

  • @8x13Wolf i didn't realize that either! omg every christmas i would watch

this and every christmas i would cry my eyes out...such a beautiful story

  • Thank you so much!!! I haven't seen this movie is over 15 years!! I loved it when k was little, and only recently did I learn that Sean marshal, who does the boys voice also is in Petes Dragon, another favorite from child hood. It was a wonderful memory watching this movie again.

    Thank you so much :)

You made me day for sure, and then some :)

    This was great!!

  • my mother tells me when i used to pout id sit down and "put your had between your knees like smal one".....Im 22 now and I cried watching this show. such a beautiful reminder of childhood memories and thought.....thanks who put this up

  • @youfool8181 I did, your welcome

  • *sniffles* I am proud to say I cried when Joseph came and Small One was saved! Hehe, my cheeks are still tear stained as I posted this! *Lotsa Hearts*

  • jeez, how many times did they trace that animation of mowgli throwing the stick and kicking the ground?

  • really beautifull animation. Thanks Don Bluth and old school Disney. Hehe so Josef was the purchaser of the Donkey. This Video reminds me of Plutarch criticism of Cato the Younger who would discard beasts and slaves when they were old instead of treating them with kindness for their hardwork.

  • it was awsome, too bad they dont make movies like this anymore

  • Walt Disney was Roman Catholic. It was the Catholic Church was founded Christmas celebration. When he was alive, Disney made good balanced storytelling. This story supports animal rights and Judeo-Christian beliefs. If God loves His animals, how much more does He love humans.

  • At first I thought.... crying over a cartoon?...but damn I was caught off guard.

  • this is beautiful!

  • anybody reminded of the jungle book at 0:24 XD

made me cry! this is such a beautiful story....*sniffles*

  • :) you're totally right, he acts exactly like Mogli :)

but Baghirah and his yellow eyes are missing :)

  • Oh yeah, that is the same animation! Not to mention he looks like Mowgli too. Anyway, yes, total tearjerker...:*)

  • Wow! I didn't know this. Have never seen it in my life before. I think it was never dubbed into German :(

But it is wonderful and made me all teary in the end!

  • @EvaliaHysteria: Actually it has been dubbed into German twice. Only the later dub has been available on video/DVD; I guess the only traces of the old dub are from Hoerspiel records or 8/16mm film prints. Which is a shame, because the old dub sounds better.

  • it WAS but I never saw it in stores and they never played it on TV. But I remember a trailer on a video-cassette. This Movie's called "Der Esel von Betlehem" in german.

  • well since this video was so beautiful and it's done im going to watch FRED or Supermariologan or cute mario bros or my videos.

  • cryin my eyes out!!! 20 years n it still gets me

  • That was beautiful. I cried. Great movie!

  • omg joseph! Thankyou donkeylongears for uploaded this! Jesus is part of this!

  • simply beautiful, first time seeing it, thank you for posting it, heartwarming.

  • Thank you as well for posting this. Haven't seen this movie in over 20 years and still remember the songs. Made me tear up a little. Again thanks

  • Thank you for posting.I love this,so touching and sweet.

  • This film still gets to me, I start crying, I don't know why because there is a happy ending. Small One gets picked to do an important task; carrying the mother of our Savior. Go Small One! You are the best.

  • It can't be because he and the boy has to be separated from each other, probably never to see other again? I know Small One ended up with the Holy Family. But I don't care. It's still sad enough to almost make me cry.

  • Wow i havnt seen this movie since i was little probably about five or so i was awesome to see it again. brings back old and good times.

  • Love this movie, but I believe a part is missing. Where the donkey is willing to give up his life and go back to the tanner so the boy could get silver. Unless that was just in the audiobook version. I think this version was censored by Disney. There is another dvd including this one that came out this year (September 09) but I haven't seen it.

  • Now this is a great chirstmas movie!!! It really toches your heart.

  • WHOO! Disney needs more stuff like this!

  • I LOVE THIS! I'm so glad someone put this up! There's another movie that's similar to this story but it's another animal and i can't think of it! anyone else know aht i'm talking about? anyways..great post!

  • This is a beautiful Christmas special. Bravo Disney.

  • I thought that the shepard is a copy of the boy from "The Jungle Book..." Sean Marshal was soo good in this show too... Undiscovered gem from Disney... Thanks for the post....

  • I have ALWAYS LOVED this movie. A few days ago I almost bought Disney's "A Christmas Carol" JUST because it had "The Small One" as well. I am SOOOO GLAD that someone posted it on You Tube. Now I can watch it ANYTIME of the year. I wish I could find the music somewhere so I can put it on my ipod.

  • The young man who voiced the sheppard boy here was the same one who played Pete in "Pete's Dragon."

  • Thank you so much for posting this-- I loved this movie when I was a child, I still know most of it by heart; it was great to see it again.

  • ah always loved this film... its one that always sticks in your heart... y cant disney films be more like this now!!, i also love the songs in it.

  • Thanks for uploading this. I wept at the conclusion when the boy sold Small One.

  • i love this too. used to watch it when my kids were small ones...glad to find it again. the boy reminds me of mowgli, as well!! :)

  • Tell me about it. I grew up on this movie, and I watched it every December since I discovered iton here. It still makes me cry at the end.

  • The little boy reminds me a lot of Mowgali from The Jungle Book when he threw the twig and kicked at the ground.

  • And....Arthur from Sword and the Stone...same footage too

  • Oh yea. I need to see Sword and the Stone again. I haven't watched it in a while.

  • Thanks for posting this. It is a great show, and brings back memories from my childhood. God Bless!!!

  • The ending @ 4:38 always brings tears to my eyes! It's just SO BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • Me too! I used to watch this ALL the time when I was little and I could NEVER ever be dry-eyed at the end!

  • Me neither.

  • awesome movie :)

  • I remember when I was a kid watcing this bit for the first time and being totally shocked when the kind man at the end said he needed a donkey to carry his wife to bethelhem.

  • We can recognize some mimical typical of Little Foot or Fievel in Small One...probably the Bluth inheritance ^^

  • Can't help but cry because this is so touchingly beautiful!!!

  • I love this movie! Makes me cry everytime I watch this! So very beautiful!!!!!

  • I haven't seen this in years! Don Bluth's first work. Makes sense it's Bluth, Though his stories sometimes lacked in subtly and direction (unlike this one, American Tail, Land Before Time and Anastasia which were brilliant) He is a pioneer in animation. Even though this picture which isn't even 1/2 an hour, the animation is incredible, and a fine religious story too! He put a lot of love and effort into this. Ah, such a nostalgic feeling.

  • this is such a heartwarming christmas moment when joseph gets the donkey to take mary to bethlehem. i love it

  • For a directorial debut, Don Bluth certainly did a marvelous job at it, creating a story that moves people in a variety of emotions, all within a short amount of time. Bluth is a legend in his own right. :)

  • I remember this scene...

it was so touching, and the idea that he probably never saw his old donkey friend again makes me want to cry

  • ok i lied, i can not help but cry at the bit with joesph and the donkey, small ones face is too cute, gets me everytime

    i love don bluth xx

  • Oh my God....so moving and touching *cries* :')

  • lol

  • God damnit, it was Joseph who bought the donkey? As stupid as this sounds (knowing that this is a Christmas special), I was not expecting that. :P

  • Why doesn't they do cartoons like this anymore ? ;__;

  • ah, don bluth before he was Do Bluth. Very thouching, this lacks the insanity that his later films tended to have.

  • It made me all warm and fuzzy inside... Just like Christmas ^-^

  • Disney make a sad ending? Nooooo

Ha ha, that's good story telling

  • @donkeylongears Heh. Sad? I don't think I've seen a more joyous ending in my life.

  • @GoldenFlither15 I think it's entirely joyous, but still a hell of a tearjerker. Good-bye is always good-bye, after all.

  • @8x13Wolf Very true. But I cried because I was so happy, although it may've been slightly mixed in with the sadness of the little boy and his donkey parting ways. :) It's very well-done.

  • I came very close to crying, that was so moving. Thank god he got a good home, I was convinced he wouldn't.

  • close to? i cried thru the whole thing... :'( reminds me of my grandpa...

reminds me of my days as a child

  • very nice

  • wow.

  • I wondered why it was on The Nostalgia critics chritmas list.

  • Now I think I know why this is a Holiday cartoon

also I noticed a Animation Template from Jungle Book at 0:23
