It could be considered both. BART behaves like a metro system in downtown San Francisco because multiple lines converge there, so you can get a train like every 3-5 minutes. Outside of downtown, it behaves more like a commuter rail because it stretches into suburbia, but it's still far more frequent (~20 minutes off-peak) than a real commuter rail like Caltrain.
love the sound of bart. plus the windy apprpach at balboa park station inbound. the seats are very comfortable. they always have empty seats waiting for you, unlike muni, which is mostly taken up all the time. when i rode bart the first time, it felt good. thanks.
Embarkadero station 1st stop in san fransisco, just about when bart comes into the station the wind from insidee the tunnel is so strong you feel like your in the middle of a tornado.
Unfortunlately, no. I remember those BART trains accelerating briskly and I was forced back on the seat, I can feel the g-force from it. It's really cool!
I went on BART for the first time on April 18, 2007 from the Walnut Creek station to the San Francisco Civic Center/UN Plaza station on the BART Yellow line.
The sounds of the BART train's traction motors powering up and accelerating are pretty cool.
It's possible that the BART cars built by Rohr Industries, as a matter of the reconditioning and overhaul in 1995 (which was completed in 2002), were fitted with ADtranz propulsion units (hence the sounds of the motors powering up and accelerating).
wow this train hauls ass

realbiggun500 5 years ago

JasonR123456 5 years ago
Yep, the 80's. But they've actually renovated most of the cars.

SOunds almost exactly like the R142A subway train here in NYC.

Except the motors are different.
BART Rohr Cars AEG/ADTranz/Bombardier Rehab: ADTranz/Bombardier 1507C.
NYC Transit Kawasaki R142A and R143: ADTranz/Bombardier 1508C (Also used by MARTA on all their rolling stock).

is there a 3-speed transmission in those things? sounds cool, but kind of futuristic sounding
asulca593 5 years ago
Actually, 3-phase Alternating Current (AC) traction drive motors.
Sulaco516 4 years ago
That thing is fucking fast the subway in toronto where i live is about half the speed
g4tech 5 years ago
They go up to 80 MPH (or 130 km/h in Canada). Rides are expensive, though.
Chapas45 4 years ago
Yep, embarcadero. I go there when I go to the city to go to shows and whatnot.

Acceleration is more quickly than Keikyu.
Keikyu's acceleration is more quickly than Eidan standard.
(Eidan standard's acceleration is 3.3km/h/s)
