You know, I bet something similar happened with Paterno and the Penn State president. They decided to cover their asses rather than go to the police. They didn't really care about the young boys being sexually abused.
I love the quote, that comes right after this scene, when Daniels is furiously considering just spilling the beans to the newspapers about all of this:
Rhonda Pearlman: "This is my career. This is everything. You go public and it hurts Carcetti. Maybe he doesn't get to be governor, but he's still the mayor and Bond is still my boss and you know the weight will not fall on them, it NEVER does!"
"Everybody's gettin' what they need behind some make-believe." Norman's such a great character, even though his role is fairly small ... he's pretty much the only political figure in the show who seems to have kept his self-awareness, and his sense of humour about the ridiculousness of politics.
@Claizen McNulty that stupid motherfucker was behind that bullshit which lead to Marlo and his crew getting busted ,Michael was right he didn't say nothing at all or had anything to do with Chris getting locked up it was the DNA that got him !
@KleWdSide If I remember correctly, Carcetti's legs were cut out from under him from the second he went into office. He found out the city was tens of millions of dollars in debt due to Royce's policies.
@mattd687 It's hard to say it was really even Royce's fault. Royce likely inherited the same sort of situation Carcetti did...you know, the circle just keeps repeating itself. Royce had probably been juggling the same sort of problems Carcetti had to, only Carcetti didn't know what that meant until he had the chair. Royce had been eating his daily big bowl of shit for years, I am pretty sure.
@bluechao True, the one thing that is Carcetti's fault is when he turned down the Governor's money that could've helped decrease or erase the debt. He turned it down because he intended to run for Governor eventually and didn't want to look weak.
Such a great scene. This scene was the payoff for the season long storyline. I couldn't stop laughing when the Mayor was left virtually speechless and Norman being the Greek Chorus of it all.
Carcetti was so funny thinking how he could spin the situation. When this premiered it quite possibly was one of the Wire's greatest scene's. It set the tone for a great ending too a epic saga.
'' I wish i was still at the newspaper so i could write on this mess...this is too fucking good lol" Norman put the icing on the cake.
"You two were on point here! Word of this gets down to Annapolis, the governor is gonna wreck me with it. And if it comes to that, you guys drop on your swords, so help me..."
Love the reference to ancient soldiers who committed suicide to save face for their king.
@danielhiryu that was the point i think... all these politicians campaign saying there gonna be different and change the way things work but end up doing the same shit to save themselves once they get in office.
