Having the government acknowledge marriage was basically a violation of the separation between church and state, because of its association with religion. All marriages licenses should be reverted to civil unions. Marriages are spiritual. A civil union should require nothing more than an oath.

I think that the Focus on the Family people are wrong. A child with a mother and a father doesn't necessarily have the best if another, perhaps socially different, family can love and care for that child even more. What's best for the child is if he/she can live in a comfortable, loving, safe environment, and I believe that anyone, not just a man and a woman, can supply that. Everyone else should just butt out of what's not their business.
