My dad was the guitar player on this recording, it was recorded in Fort Worth, TX. My mom was there when they did it. Dad's gone now, but it is awesome to hear this song everytime I hear it whether live, or in the neighborhood Walgreens. The piano player, Ronnie Kelly is also gone. I think the others are still around.
@wesstevens WOW/. I lived in Fort Worth in 1962 and on the Texas News at 10 oclock they had this segment on "local boy makes good". That's something about your Dad playing on this record. Must be a good feeling, a mark in history.
upsetvet The Straightjackets were a local band in the 1960's and I was a close personal friend of all the members. My how these songs bring back the memories, some good and some bad. It's hard to believe that 50 years have gone by since I last heard the music of the Straightjackets and danced the night away with my girl that has been my wife for 54 years.
It don't matter what time or place or where or when or color o' skin - south o' maison Dix to Florida keys, Gulf coast thru to wes-Tex n slingshot clear to the Rockies and beyond - Good Ole Boyz iz jus Good Ole Boyz !
I'm 57 and remember many of these artists and songs from when I was a young kid. I've heard and seen many interviews over the years, but never seen this one. This one was particularly interesting and unique. This goes back to another "lifetime"! Thanks for posting!
These are the things that make YouTube really interesting. Interviews that are not bleeped and dubbed. There is nothing vulgar about it, it is just being human and calling it like it is. It was guys like this that made Rock and Roll so interesting, and just a great weave in the American fabric.
He says that learning to play it is like it. Now the actual playing of the harmonica. The learning to play it is kin to learning how to do something by fooling around with it long enough.
maybe I should have stuck with solo fulfullment more cause we just had a baby on Aug 24, now have to get out my harps and earn some extra money; like for the next 20 years...
I always liked both Hey Baby and Love Me Do for their harmonica, but never knew about the link between Bruce and the Beatles, or that Bruce had been to Liverpool and met them.
Loved his comments about "bleak" Liverpool! It has improved recently though. :)
Delbert did not teach Lennon to play harmonica. First, Lennon played harmonica since age 5. Second, in the video McClinton point blank states that he did not teach it to John. But Delbert's riff in "Hey Baby" did inspire "Love Me Do."
Delbert McClinton, with out any doubt is one of the heros and pioneers of early rock n roll. I can't go a single day with out listening to his straight forward no-nonsense approach to music. To hear him in interviews is equally as amazing. He just makes sense! Thank you for posting this.
Hey Baby - (i guess i was actually almost nine years old when it was released)- was probably the first R&R song that i was totally in love with, and i do play cross harp today. So i bet that early memory is what did it for me. I was mesmerized by that harmonica. This is a fantastic piece! Thanks for posting it! I bought Dirty Dancing 20 Anniversary and you know - the Hey Baby scene! I am nine again.
What I was meaning about the CLINTON remark was DELBERT SAYS RIGHT ON THIS VIDEO HE MIGHT HAVE "INSPIRED" LENNON. (WHO BY THE WAY"COPIED"our ROCK N ROLL GREATS;BO DIDDLEY,CHUCKBERRY,MUDDY WATERS,JIMMY REED,HOWLIN'WOLF,JOHN LEE HOOKER, ETC ETC ETC. themojoman(.)com
Great video. Saw Bruce with Delbert back in late March at Nashville Childrens Theater. 46 years after the release of Hey Baby and they're both still going strong!

at 2:31 Delbert says after a while, playing harp is kinda like masturbation. I feel
these two skills are very differnet.
I've been mastubrating 50+years and it never made me famous or got me paid; but my harp playing did!:-)

What farfo61 says is true. Delbert, himself, has said many times that he didn't actually teach John. He always laughs when people ask him if he did.
